With Sklackware 7.0 and kernel 2.2.14...

I finally got NVIDIA's driver install for the GeForce 256 going. The
problem I had is getting the XF86Config file straight for the
GLX module.

After a lot of trial and error I got it to load and work ok with one
problem.

If I try to go from X to another CLI terminal with CTL+ALT-F1,F2,etc...
the mouse pointer disappears. The terminal doesn't change. Then I have
to CTL+ALT-BACKSPACE to get out.

I've looked over the new file (I had to use the sample from NVIDIA to
get it to work adding all my definitions, excluding some entries that
were unneeded) and I don't see anything that controls that keyboard
sequence. Any ideas?

Subject: FYI Helpful info on Netatalk on RH7
From: Donald Brady <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I posted a few days ago trying to get my printer available via appletalk on
RH7.

Finally got it working. It seems that since RH7 uses the LPRng stuff you
need to have your papd.conf file use the lpr command rather than placing the
ps files directly in the queue. There is a atalk mailing list at:

http://www.netspace.org/lsv-archive/linux-atalk.html

where I dug this up.

Here is my papd.conf file as an example:

deskjet:\
        :pr=|/usr/bin/lpr -Plp:\
        :op=root\
        :pd=/usr/local/ppd/HPLJ5P_1.PPD:

Hope this is useful to people.

Thanks

Donald

"chmod g+s public_html" should do it for you. That means any file
created in the directory will be owned by the "club" group.

I'm having problems getting dpms to work on my system.

As far as I know it is supported by my:

hardware - an Intel D815EEA m'board (using integrated graphics)
monitor - an Iiyama VM-Pro 411
software - RH7, kernel 2.2.16, XFree86 (4.0.1)/X11R6.4, KDE 2

Using the dpms facility in KDE has no effect, nor does the use of

xset dpms x y z

from a console (root).

I have tried adding the option "DPMS" to the XF86Config file (monitor
section), but still no result.

Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Greetings,
I am setting up MRTG (2.9.7) on my SUSe 6.3 box, and cfgmaker is
consistently fouling up the IP addresses by appending ".161". This is
whether I enter a host's name or IP address, it has the same appendix:

 SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "192.168.0.1" [192.168.0.1].161)
    community: "fubar"
^^^ See it here?
    request ID: ...

I am RTFMing my eyes out on SNMP, env, and MRTG, to the point of reading the
PERL scripts for cfgmaker, all to find out where this is stored.

ACTIONS SO FAR:
Initial install of MRTG produced a WORKING copy. After a reboot, now I have
this persistent problem.
Removed, recompiled, reinstalled a fresh download of MRTG 2.9.7, no change.
Played with canonical naming (host.domain.com.) but no difference.
Tried entering both host names and ips into cfgmaker, no difference.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The append statement in lilo has a character limit. For your append
statement you will need to get a new version of lilo as the rpm that
comes with RH 6.2 is not configurable. You will also need to remove the
old lilo rpm before you install the new version of lilo.

This is a real FAQ these days. Let me gues: You run kernel 2.4.0 and get
this message when you try to run rpc.lockd (when starting 'NFS file

Just don't start lockd - it is implmented in the kernel now and
unnecessary.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Loadlin problem: Win98 and RH7.0
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 19:25:30 GMT

I'm attempting to get loadlin working on a Thinkpad 760ED loaded with
Windows 98 and Linux (RH 7.0). It's been years since I tried to
configure a dual boot machine and even then I've used LILO for the job.
I found "a" Win98+Loadlin HOWTO and followed the directions. At first
I'd had the machine setup up with LILO and booted to Windows, which
immediately pops up another Win or Linux(loadlin) menu. If I select
Windows, Win 98 boots fine. If I select Linux, loadlin uncompresses the
kernel then appears to crash at "Dentry hash table..." or somewhere
around there. It dumps the registers and other info to the screen with
the message (not verbatim) Unable to handle vitual page request.

I can boot Linux fine from the LILO menu but not with loadlin. So I
wondered if booting the LILO MBR then trying to boot with loadlin was
screwing something up. So I used fdisk /mbr in a DOS shell to use the
Win98 MBR. That didn't change anything, except now I've over written
the LILO MBR and have to boot Linux with a boot disk. (Easy enough to
fix, but not the desired result.)

Anyway, this laptop has an Mwave sound device that will only work in
SoundBlaster compatable mode after the DOS drivers for it have been
loaded. No Linux drivers exist for it. The hack to get it to work
requires that you load the drivers from DOS and use loadlin to start
Linux.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanx in advance.

Subject: changing default max-files?? (*NOT* via echo to /proc)
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 19:37:16 GMT

How do I change the default max-files in /proc when I compile the
kernel? (2.2.x)

I asked this question about 3 months ago and nobody replied, I can't
find any info on the WWW or in the kernel doc's (perhaps I'm not
looking correctly)

I'm definately not going to echo "65536" to /proc via the crontab
(rubbish solution)
