Hello Jeff,

I've got the same problem with Suse 7.0. Is it possible to use the
redhat patches with Suse??? I don't found this files at the Suse
server...

Best regards.

Hello Yu Di!

Do you have installed the files? Works this solution?

I want to be glad to get an answer from you.

If you look in the Documentation directory of the unpacked kernel
sources, you will find a list of other utilities that must be upgraded
also. Once thats been done, its pretty much a make and install
situation.

I am brand new to Linux and trying to install Mandrake 7.2 on an Asus A7V
motherboard. The install goes fine until the reboot. Linux does not
recognize the ATA100 controller. I have tried the "linux
ide2=XxXXXX,XxXXXX" command in rescue mode and nothing. I have WindowsME
installed on a 20GB on the ATA100 channel and have Mandrake on the ATA66
Channel on a 10 GB removeable drive. The only Linux driver I have found is
one for Redhat 6.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am learning Linux to rid myself
of Microsoft's OS.

You mean the mbr of the Windows disc?

I can't help thinking that I must be doing something wrong, if doing it
this way works for other people. Either that, or I have some bizarre
hardware incompatability that others don't have. (Just in case it means
anything to anyone, I have Gigabyte GA-5AX motherboard running Award bios,
a Western Digital Caviar 13Gb HD for Linux and Lilo and a Seagate
Barracuda ATA2 20Gb HD formatted with the Dynamic Drive Overlay for
Windows98 - Both are currently set up as being LBA mode in the Bios).

The option of a physical switch to toggle the Master/Slave jumpers on the
two drives, and therefore which OS boots at power up, is looking more and
more attractive...

Subject: I'm sure there's a simple solution--but help!
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 13:27:03 GMT

Hi,

I've successfully compiled and installed kernel 2.4.0 except for one
thing: sound support.

I have compiled it several time with either sound modules or with sound
built into the kernel, but I get no sound. Trying to start the mixer
brings the message that there is no mixer.

I've never had to do this before. I had RH 6.1 which came with a huge
precompiled kernel (2.2.12-20) and preconfigured modules.

Compiling your own kernel is great. The new kernel is half the size of
the old one, and my old P120 now seems to run like a bat out of hell.

In my last try, I compiled the sound drivers into the kernel. At boot
up, I get the message

localhost kernel: Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu
     Savolainen 1993-1996
localhost kernel: sb: No ISAPnP cards found, trying standard ones...
  localhost lpd: lpd startup succeeded
localhost kernel: sb: I/O, IRQ, and DMA are mandatory
localhost kernel: YM3812 and OPL-3 driver Copyright (C) by Hannu
     Savolainen, Rob Hooft 1993-1996

Does this mean that I have to specify io, irq, and dma when I compile?
If so how do I do it?

Or does it mean I should add a boot parameter to lilo.conf? If so,
what is the parameter and syntax? The HOW-TOs I've looked at say
little more than that it is more trouble than it's worth to add sound
to lilo.

Also, I get the following message when shutting down

localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0

This is perplexing because I presently have no sound modules. Is my
problem simply that I'm inadvertently accessing modules used by the
previous kernel? If so, what is accessing them, and how do I stop it?

Besides upgrading modutils and all of the other stuff you're supposed
to upgrade, all I've changed is the kernel and the System-map.

As a newbie, I don't feel like tinkering too much more without expert
advice. If you look in the book, _Recipes for Disaster_ under
"Tinkering with Linux," you'll see my picture.

Lastly, the sound card is a Soundblaster 16 PnP (no, it doesn't work
with isapnp installed either). The old modules.conf options were

  sb dma16=5 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330 dma=1 irq=5
  op13 io=0x330

They used to work, but not anymore, even when I boot the old kernel.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
John Morris

Subject: x-server / vnc question
Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 14:40:46 +0100

hi

this is the first time I work with linux and I have some questions.
I installed linux (SuSE 7) for routing and firewalling purposes, as
file- and webserver. So after having set up network I installed vnc,
something like pcanywhere, and configured it remotely from my PC. It
all works fine. But still there are some things to solve.

I need a tool or command that requests a web page via http and pipes
it to another command like grep. Any idea?

then I need a x-server to install on win 98 and nt 4.
I fell in love with the Klicki and the Bunti of kde2
and kde2 does not run with vnc. (Yes, I like buttons in 3D ;-)
It does run locally, I connected monitor and keyboard to prove that.
Now I need a working x-server and hope I get a free one.

and if I have a real x-server then, what about audio? I want to stream
audiofiles to the terminals. Each session with its own sound/video.
Possible? If, how?

So If you have answers, tell me.
I am reading, so "man command" would be helpful like a download
address or something else that shows me the way. This is my first
deeper contact with linux and every new command is like a password to
a newbie even if it is common for experienced users.

Thank you for any hint,

Andreas

For learning Linux and Perl you should try and get a copy of Slackware 3.2.
I ran that for several years on a 486 and you can squeeze it down to a
rather small size by not selecting everything provided. Also, I would
heartily recommend "Running Linux" published by O'Reilly. Even though
written with RedHat in mind, this is an excellent guide and has salvaged
mistakes I made several times as well as explained.

I did the network install.

So here comes the confusing part: as user I'm 'davisf'. If I move
my stuff to some other partition, and then follow your advice as
follows: >
>Make a symlink so normal users can use it.
>
>ln -s /usr/local/office52/program/soffice /usr/bin/soffice

will this reload my configurations for SO? I think it does a
fresh install, right? That's what I mean: the config files have
the path variables all 'hardcoded', to use a big word.

If I were sharp enough (or had enough time), I'd (a) figure out
what all the config files are (there's a rather large number, it
seems even if the individual user install using the network
option is small compared to doing it the other way) and (b) do
some scripting to bulk-change the path variables.

It's simpler just to reinstall obviously.

Good advice though, and thank you for it!

F.

I have the same problem with Redhat 7.0, kernel 2.2.16 and 2.2.18, running
on a HP
e-vectra which has the Intel 810e chipset:
I cannot use ALT-CTRL-F1 to get the terminal mode, when I am running X
(XFree86 4.0.1),
I just get a black screen and have to reboot.
If I don't run X, the VT feature (various virtual terminals) works.

Any ideas?

I use a 3C509B and the driver is named 3c509.o, so I'd expect
something like 3c905.o for your card.

hdparm says the dma is on, but won't allow any udma equ settings. Of

I expect, many small. First noticed when mc's copy progress bar would
stop in the middle for an extended coffee break, then noticed the mouse,
and the animations of the xsystem monitor were all freezing at the same
time. Later, I repeated it with 'cp -R' and it wasn't so noticeable. I
gotta check that card out for an led hookup though, I like to see
dancing lights...

Now, how can I unmount /usr, and remount the new partition in its
place? Edit fstab and reboot maybe? umount claims its busy.

Cheers, Gene

I prefer the patched version from http://www.waldherr.org/junkbuster/
which doesn't only block the adds as the original version but replaces
them with transparent gifs as well.

Simplest would be by the way to block domains by adding them to the
/etc/hosts file as 127.0.0.1 (gives broken images and such but is
terribly quick and easy.

well diabling java script is the only thing (having java disabled is
must) but that breaks a lot of sites.

well i had similar problems, but found out the sollution wich worked for
me.

First i tailed the /var/log/messages and found out that the HWadd of the
card whne the module was loaded was 00:00:00:00, wich clearly indicates
an error. The module did load, but the card wasn't working.

The only way i have to have the card get a real HWadd is to cold-boot my
PC when i come back from windows. SO if you have boot in win, then close
the PC and the boot up in linux. It works also the other way round. If
you use the card under linux, you have to shut-down the PC in order to
get it work under win.
It's probably an error in the cards design.

my card is the DFE-530TX (rev A).

Did you check that the BIOS indicates no PnP OS ??
in modules.conf add the options line
options eth0 irq=0x io=0x were you input the values given in windows.

Hope this helps.
