I had similar problems with my 2.2.10 kernel. I compiled the 2.2.16 kernel
with the IDE patch (HOW-TO UDMA66) to recognize my TrionesUDMA66 controller.
You might try that kernel configuration first. Once I did that, I no longer
had to pass parameters to the kernel since it found the ide drive itself and
booted accordingly.

Just wondering if anyone knows how to set Grub up again after compiling a

(I know how to set Lilo up fine but I want to learn how to set Grub up
properly)
Thank you for any help... =)

I guess it depends upon what you are doing with it once you get it and
what scripting language you are most familar with. For shell scripts you
might want to take a look at 'man wget' (or if you don't find that,
install wget package).
Perl has several modules to do it from LWP to IO::Socket (webget
example in 'perldoc perlipc') to the plain Socket module in increasing
order of difficulty in use. IO::Socket and Socket modules come with
Perl. Installing everything from scratch to use LWP can be daunting, but
you may have a package for that on your Linux CD (maybe libwww package
of Perl modules).

vncserver can run the old KDE. Not sure why it would not also run KDE2
unless there is something radically changed in its protocols. Maybe you
just don't know what to put in $HOME/.vnc/xstartup. For the old KDE I
simply used 'startkde &' in place of 'twm &'.

That is one problem with vncserver, sounds come out of the server box
rather than the vncviewer. I am not even sure how to pipe sounds from
Linux to Linux, but one thought is some sort of streaming audio on a
webserver.
Not sure about Linux video, but I know that a vncviewer in Linux cannot
see video on my Win98 laptop, probably because video is written directly
to hardware without going through Windows system calls, not to mention not
knowing when to update the remote display for it.

Subject: Re: Installing Linux 6.2 with Windows 2000/NT 4.0
Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 07:30:49 +0100
Thanks all for your advice.
Though I already managed to install RedHat Linux 6.2 on the fourth + fifth
partition of my secondairy harddisk. It just seems that DiskDruid does not allow
the creation of a NATIVE partition in the situation I'm having (BUG??), but
fdisk has no problem with it what so ever. Also, instead of the 'KDE'
installation method I used the previous times, this time I used the custom
installation method, because I did not want LILO to install on the MBR, but on
the partition I'm installing LINUX to.
Now Linux is working fine. The only problem I now have, is that I can only boot
into linux using a floppy disk. I did copy the LILO bootsector and added it to
windows 2000 boot loader, but all that will happen is the letters 'LI' appear in
the up left corner of the screen and that's it.
I do know the solution to this problem, but that solution is another problem.
This problem is caused by the fact that I'm using NTFS on all my non-linux
partitions (including the active boot partition). This can be fixed by changing
the 'lineair' option to 'lba32' in the lilo.conf file. But when I start LILO
now, I get the error that /dev/hdb6 is not on the primairy disk and that the
sector number is over 1023. Does anybody know if this can be fixed by installing
lilo to another partition? Say the second partition on the primairy hard disk??
Dennis.

Hi Everyone.
I've been trying to install modem but "forget about it". I will just buy
external modem. Right now my concern are about sound card. How do I use
Modconf, or put it more accurately how do I configure my sound card using
modconf.
I did following thing and getting, and it saying "invalid parameter irq"
why?
1. Open a console window by clicking on the console button on the
taskbar.
2. At the prompt, type modconf and press enter.
3. Maximize the window by clicking once on the small square in the
upper-right corner.
4. Using the keyboard arrow keys, scroll down, select misc and press
enter.
5. Locate the sound card in the list and press enter.
6. On the next screen, select Install the module in the kernel.
7. Now supply the necessary IO address and IRQ. Type "irq=5 io=0x220
dma=1"

I have a local network at home connected 24 hours a day.
I have a firewall to protect it : it is configured to allow incoming
connections only if my network has established the connection.
I have a sendmail server (sendmail + imap) for my local network and I can
read my mail with an imap client from my two PCs. I also use Amavis and
Antivir to check virus.
As my network has to establish the connection with my mail provider, I use
fetchmail to collect all the mails and dispatch them in our mailboxes.
I don't know if there is another way, but this one works fine for me.
If you want more information (configuration files for example), feel free
to ask me, I will be pleased to help you.

Sounds like you got the master/slave/single jumpers wrong.
Check this first.
LILO can still boot linux?
If so please show the output of
`fdisk -l /dev/hd[ac]`
and
`cat /etc/lilo.conf`
