Okay so... I hooked up my DAT to the internal SCSI chain with the
Yamaha at the end. The DAT is not terminated, the Yamaha is, and
everything works fine :-) So I suspect the INITIO card can't power the
terminator when the DAT is hooked up externally. I haven't tried
enabling the DAT's terminator power and connecting it externally again
but I bet that will work too.

No matter what I do, (cat file > /dev/lp0) I get
the message '... kernel: lp0 off-line' in
/var/log/messages.
I have Suse6.3 (Linux 2.2.13) installed. Lsmod
reports that the modules lp, parport, parport_pc
are inserted. In /var/log/messages the parport
seems to be OK (io=0x378,irq=7). Everything I
found for /etc/modules.conf (aliases and so on) is
inserted.
Tried it with different IRQs and io-Bases. Tried
every option on the printer (which is a Kyocera
FS1200 which printed several weeks ago without
complaining!!!)
When I start Windows printing works!
Help! (I compiled the Kernel 3-times last 5
Hours!)

Yes... Infuriatingly cryptic, isn't it?
The first seven lines of the exception are identical to the one I
received during a harddrive installation some time ago. The
cause was a corrupt RPM. My HD had become inflicted with
newly hatched bad blocks.

Hallo Ed,

Stick a diskette in the drive and enter "lilo -b /dev/fd0 -C <lilo.conf>"
where <lilo.conf> is the pathname of the lilo.conf file. Without the
"-C <lilo.conf>" parameter, the lilo command looks for lilo.conf in the
/etc directory.

If it's useful, my firewall script is here:
<URL:http://www.jasmine.org.uk/~simon/bookshelf/papers/instant-firewall/instant-firewall.html>
It's quite simple, but it's mentioned in despatches^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H
the firewall FAQ, so it can't be all bad.

Considering the amount of cross-posting you're guaranteed a war
here. It's all a matter of opinion. If you fancy a change in lifestyle
try sendmail. If you want it quick and easy try exim or one of the
others (qmail, postfix, smail).
If you want a lot of reading do a search on deja and see what's
already been written a thousand times.

Subject: 2 Ethernet cards, system won't boot
Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 10:45:10 GMT
I've just gotten a new development system, with 2 ethernet cards, so
that it can also be used as a firewall.
The system works fine with one ethernet card. With two cards,
though, the system won't start; it seems to shift the address
of my ide drives, and consequently it can't find the kernel.
Here's the configuration:
Linux Mandrake 7.1
Asus P2B motherboard
2 750 MHz PIIIs
512 Meg RAM
2 Maxtor 40 Gig hard drives
Promise Ultra/66 controller (both drives are connected
to the Ultra/66 controller; that's what pushed me to Mandrake,
which contains a kernel with Ultra/66 support)
Soundblaster Live Value
Elsa Erazor TNT2
2 3com 3c905c PCI ethernet cards
and the usual floppy, keyboard, etc.
Because of the ultra/66, my two drives are hde and hdg.
If I put in the second ethernet card, the system claims to find
partitions at hdi and hdk. The numbers and sizes of these partitions
match the ones that should be at hde and hdg. Of course, since
it's looking for hde and hdg, the boot fails claiming that it can't
mount the filesystem.
Once I went ahead and reinstalled the OS. When I did that,
the 3c509 module wouldn't load, claiming that the device or resource
was busy. I looked at the information in /proc/interrupts and
/proc/pci and could see no conflict. According to the bios, it's
assigning the second card to IRQ 5; I see nothing else that wants
IRQ 5. Since that time, I reinstalled again with one ethernet card;
I don't have copies of the /proc listings.
I might, I suppose have conflicts with i/o ports and/or device memory.
I'd appreciate suggestions for detecting and fixing these problems.
If I install the second ethernet card, as I mentioned above, the boot
fails, claiming that it can't mount the first filesystem.
If I then use the Mandrake 7.1 boot CD as a rescue image, it allows me
to mount the partitions on hde!
Deeply confused,
-dms

It's interesting - a good example of generalisation although I'd have to
think a little about non-3-way firewalling with it.
Two things: I use input policy = DENY, it seems to ACCEPT it. With DENY,
you have to know about everything you want to accept, with ACCEPT you have
the advantage that you can do ipchains -F remotely and not block yourself
out by accident (hic!); we make of these what we may, anyway.
The other thing that struck me on a quick scan-through was this comment:
| # Spoof protection: if a packet arrives at one interface claiming to
| # come from another network, it's lying. Stop it, and log the attempt.
I didn't see any special treatment of `hostname`-on-loopback cases here -
see the vague discussion with John a month or so back. OTOH I didn't look
particularly carefully, and it might not claim to deal with that case
anyway.
I'll give it a blast for one or two networks and check the results in a bit

Hi,
I just installed sound on my TI TravelMate 513TE, RH 6.1, kernel 2.2.12.
I used sndcnfig, and it worked properly.
However, the volume of the demo it played was really low...
I played a CD from KDE, but it is the same. All the "knobs" I can use to
control the voulme are at their maximum, but I still can hardly listen
to the music.
With w98, I have to keep the level at 30%, to not break my ears.
So, I think HW is OK.
Do you have any solution ?
Thanx in advance

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 14:07:40 +0000
Hi,
Hope this is not too OT but there's probably more chance of someone here
knowing the answer!
To get my etherlink III 3c509B Combo working in linux I disabled the PnP
and manually set the IRQ and I/O with the 3c5x9cfg.exe program in
windows.
This works fine in linux, using isapnptools.
However I just can't get it to work in Windows.
If I use the ISA mode driver, I am allowed to specify I/O port only and
no IRQ.
If I use the EISA mode driver Control Panel->System->Device
Manager->Network Adaptors->Properties says that the driver could not be
loaded, and hence I don't get to specify IRQ & IO at all.
Has anyone had/resolved this problem before?
I went to the 3com site but the blurb on the driver download page states
that 3c509 is only supported in 'classic' (???) and PnP modes, not ISA
and EISA.
Alternatively............
Seeing as windows can see the NIC in PnP mode fine, can I get linux to
load it?
Currently if I set the card in PnP mode, linux hangs when I try to start
the eth0 interface.
The card is being loaded in /etc/conf.modules with
alias eth0 3c509
Does anyone know why it hangs and whatI could do about it?
Kind regards,
Dave
