I have the SCSI version of that drive. I think your using the wrong
device. On the SCSI version I have to use /dev/st0 and I may be wrong
but I think you need to use /dev/ht0 instead of /dev/hda which is the
hard drive.

Subject: Installing RedHat 7 to Hardware RAID drives
Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 17:23:27 GMT
I have RedHat 7 Professional and I am trying to install it to a hardware
RAID (Mylex DAC960). When trying to install, I get an error stating that
there is no writeable media available. The server (DEC Prioris HX6000) also
has two embedded Adaptec AIC7880 SCSI controllers on the motherboard. I
have the embedded controllers' BIOS disabled with only the Mylex BIOS
enabled, and the motherboard BIOS is set to boot from PCI (instead of
embedded controllers). One of the embedded controllers has only the CD-ROM
drive (no hard drives) while the other embedded has nothing.
I suspect that maybe Linux is trying to find a hard drive on the same
controller as the CD drive which is causing the failure. When the
installation program is starting up, I do see a message saying that it is
loading both the "AICXXXX" as well as the "DAC960" drivers. And then it is
also seeing the CD drive on the embedded controller. I even tried to
install from hard drive just to see if it would see the RAID from there, and
it said that no hard drives were available.
So how do you get around this to force it to see the RAID? Is there a way
to specify at the installation "boot:" prompt to where (controller) you
would like the install to go?
As a note: I did try installing SCO Unix on this same system afterwards,
and it installed perfectly fine (seeing both the RAID and the CD drive).
So, it is not a problem with the hardware...
Thanks in advance for any help,
Scott Navarre

>>I fell in love with the Klicki and the Bunti of kde2 and kde2 does
not run with vnc.<<
It does! I've just set it up. What you might want to do is:
- change the link /usr/X11/bin/startkde auf /opt/kde2/bin/startkde
(supposed you have kde2 in opt -> set it to the kde2 directory)
- include vnc directory in PATH (certainly you have this yet - just to
make sure...)
- have $HOME/xstartup like:
#!/bin/sh
startkde&
so far so good. That's what took my the whole afternoon to find out
vncserver -depth 16
By default vnc starts with 8 bit color depth only. That's fine with kde
1 but not good enough for kde2.
I found out that KDE2 was complaining about color mapping in in the
~/.vnc/dlhg01b9:1.log file so finally I gave the 16bit colors a try. It
worked and saved my day ;-)
Have fun

I have a Trust ISDN PCI Communicator 128 adaptator and Suse Linux 7.0.
It's detected by the system (in YaST1) as a NetJet U, and when I select
start in the configuration screen of YaST,it doesn't work.I get a message
who said that there is perhaps an IRQ of I/O error.
I'm a newbie in Linux.
How can I use these adaptater with Linux? Someone can help me?

A few choices:
1) Make a boot partition for Linux that exists inside the 1024 cylinder limit,
or
2) Go to www.freshmeat.net (or similar place), search on lilo, and
download/build the latest which gets rid of the 1024 limit (which works like a
charm, I've done it with my system).
3) Boot linux using a floppy diskette.

First things first, have you looked at /var/log/messages to be sure the kernel
sees and initializes /dev/lp0?
If it does, then
echo hello world > /dev/lp0
should do something _eventually_ (you may have to also echo a form feed to the
device to get it to print, perhaps using echo -e "\f" > /dev/lp0).

Hi Jorrit. Generally you should install a windows partition first and
then use fdisk or another linux product to make the linux partions.
Windows won't recognize anything that it does not create, but linux
does. If you make the linux partitions last it will recognize dos and
linux partitions. Then use lilo to select which os to boot. You should
also NOT use a swap partition over 100M. Check linuxnewbies.org for
information on dual booting and setup of the partitions.

I'm not looking at a mincom man page at the moment, but I'm not sure what
minicom assumes for the modem port. If it's /dev/modem, then you need to check
to see if /dev/modem is linked to /dev/ttyS0.

Hmm. Do you really mean that it is the slave on the first IDE channel? Or is it
the master on the secondary IDE channel? It would be strange for it to be the
master on the first channel.

You didn't say how you issued your tar request. The device for an IDE tape drive

Hi Eric. I have installed a full workstation installation of RH 7.0 and
it has ftp enabled. Look at the /etc/services file with an editor to
see if it is enabled there. Also note that tftp is different than ftp.
I assume that you know whether your nework hardware is working, if not
sure that would be something to check.

I have a very interesting problem with mgetty, it's init seems to be
sending something to a modem which leaves it in a broken state not
recoverable with &F resets.
Using mgetty 1.1.9 and Zoom Dual-standard or USR Sportster modems.
I was running an old version of mgetty, and reinstalled the machine
for several reasons. I install the current (at that time) mgetty and
configured it.
I tried the first Zoom modem before starting mgetty, and both dial and
answer (S0=1) worked fine. I started mgetty and the modem did not
answer. On trying the modem by hand again, it would neither detect dial
tone nor answer.
Thinking it was a coincidental modem failure, I pulled another Zoom
out of the box and tried the same things, with the same result. Then I
tried a USR SPortster, also with the same result.
Now I have three useless modems and no modem capability.
Does anyone have a clue (a) whay this happens or (b) how to get the
modems going again? I suspect that mgetty is sending some odd init which
causes problems, and which is saved in the CMOS and not reset by &F. But
I'm guessing at that.

Also try mulinux. It boots from a floppy, and for 2-3 floppies you
get x-windows, gcc and other utilities! (Of course, the x-windows is
pretty coarse, but, heh, it fits on a floppy and lets you telnet.)

Guess what? Your hint about problems with the boot disk gave me an
idea : What if the Red Hat mirror site I used (ftp.ou.edu) had the
original boot disk image, bugs and all? Well, I happened to have
bought the RedHat Updates CD-ROM recently, so I used rawrite.exe to
make a boot disk from the boot.img file found on that CD-ROM. BINGO!!
No more problems with the install. Some other odd behavior of the
upgrade path on the boot disk was corrected, also.
Glad the problem is solved. Thanks to everyone for the help. It does
lower my confidence in this system of Red Hat FTP site (almost
impossible to log into all day long) and mirror sites (how do we know
the mirror sites stay up to date and don't pass bugs around?) I will
try to contact the FTP site admin at OU.

You can even download an image of such a rescue CD.
No hassle of figuring out what you need to do.
Search freshmeat for it.

Hi Washington. If you use linux fdisk to name the partitions it will
recognize both systems, but the reverse is not true. Windows will not
recognize the linux partition. Run fsck with a couple different options
to check and maybe correct a problem with the filesystems. Configure
the lilo.conf file to set up boot options the way you want. You can also
look for detailed dual boot info at a site like linuxnewbie.org .

I always have remembered it being just 'pserver', when using the pserver.

Post how you have the entire service setup. Also check /etc/services to ensure
the cvspserver entries are still intact.

Are you using inetd or xinetd?

Need to first find out what you are doing first. ;-)

Not sure what you mean. :-(

it's a backup, to turn that put "set nobackup" in your .vimrc.

Ask the right question. *Why* does it fail.
Trust me, it wouldn't be bootable anyway.
I'll give you a hint:
Use the lba32 keyword.
Search the lilo documentation yourself
