** you found this to work? I had to put "set -o vi" in ".bashrc"
Remember, BASH and KSH are NOT really using VI, they are only emulating the vi
keystokes
for command recall. In a system that supports a real ksh (not a clone)
all you need to do is say "export EDITOR=vi" for ksh to use the vi keystrokes.

Hi,

I am not sure which newsgroup I should post to, so please forgive me
if I post in the wrong group.
I want to know what kind of software people use for those Dynamic DNS
service, I mean the server side. Is is some kind of specially written
software ? Or is it public domain software ?

Also make sure you defrag the harddrive before running PM. you might
also try FIPS, on linux cd under dosutils.

To Herman, Eric:

Thank you for the replies guys. Appreciate it.
I returned to Gnome, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and entered the console.
Logged in as root w/ password then entered xf86config in prompt.
Reconfigured X according to monitor and graphics settings. In the end
prompted me to overwrite xf86config file? Yes. Returned to Gnome by Alt+F7.
Restarted xserver/Gnome by Ctrl+Alt+backspace.
No help still the same corrupt display. I rebooted. Now i cant enter the
Gnome GUI but only the login prompt. Pressing any combo keys above yields no
result. How can i return to GUI? Any new suggestion bout my corrupt display?
Sorry for this mess guys.
Just wonderin ... can i access the net using text based version? How about
email, browsing, chat and downloading files? I dont mind the GUI if can
achieved the same through "dos".

Subject: Warning: /boot/System.map has an incorrect kernel version.
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 18:42:08 GMT

I have installed Slackware 4.0 on several machines and have routinely
rebuilt kernels without any problems except, this error which appears at
several points during operation.

At bootup I get an error in syslog
Jan 26 11:40:04 bonham kernel: Symbol table has incorrect version
number.

and in /var/log/messages
Jan 26 12:04:12 bonham kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map
Jan 26 12:04:12 bonham kernel: Inspecting /System.map
Jan 26 12:04:12 bonham kernel: Loaded 7569 symbols from /System.map.
Jan 26 12:04:12 bonham kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.2.17.

I have /root partition as well as a /boot partition. When recompiling
the kernel the /System.map is replaced but the /boot/System.map is
always the same one from the original install. I tried copying the
/System.map to /boot without success. I tried reconfiguring LILO to boot
= /dev/sda1 (which is the /boot partition) as opposed to boot = /dev/sda
(which is the way it was originally installed).

I can't figure out whether this is a lilo issue or a kernel building
issue (or both). I have always had this problem but, I've just put up
with it.

Anyone have a fix, a hint, or a clue?

Paul

One other thing to check - select non PnP OS in the BIOS options. This
worked perfectly for me for Mandrake 7.2. Maybe this will help for RH.

I have a question, are you using sudo? and if you are why isn't it
producing logs. Look at your logs, usually unless changed sudo will log
to an authpriv file named perhaps /var/log/secure. Check your
/etc/syslog.conf file for the entry that is supposed to post to
/var/log/sudo.log,and also look to where authpriv.* is logging. Sudo
logs should be in that file. I suspect this entry that is logging to
sudo.log might be wrong.

Just a thought.

I am sure this question has been asked before, but I just found this
newsgroup. Here's the situation. I have 3 public static IP's. One will
be assigned to the Linux firewall. The other two will be assigned to two
machines inside of the Linux firewall. The Linux box has two NIC's. One
with the external IP and the other with an internal IP. The two machines
that will take up the remaining 2 IP's are physically behind the Linux box
(cable connection wise). The reason for this setup is because I want the
two machines to be protected by the Linux firewall, yet have all of their
internet functionality intact. What do I need to do to get this working?
THanks in advance for any help or advice.

This is a log message from an ipchains rule that is filtering multicast
packets. Check out the ipchains man page. you can list you current
ipchains rules with the command: ipchains -L

It sounds like the nic is slow to come up and when the system tries to
mount network file systems it giving you this error. The message is
just getting embedded in the other boot messages. You might try moving
the netfs script startup to a later position in the process and see if
that helps.

Subject: Anaconda install error (please advise)
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 19:46:57 GMT

Basics: installing RH 6.2 from a bootable CD which I burned using the
zoot-i386.iso, downloaded from Redhat itself.

Install begins nicely enough. I get to the part where the system says
its looking for packages to install then hangs. When I redo in text
mode I see that the error being reported is:
***** Exception Occured *****
File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 342, in ?
    intf.run (todo, test = test)
...more stuff, much more of the same as above...
...last couple lines follow...
line 299, in read CompsFile
  comp.add Package (packages[1])
File "/usr/lib/anaconda/comps.py",
  line 46, in __getitem__
  return self.packages[item]
  Keyerror: basesystem
***end of message***

So I've gone to the usual help places and tried a couple suggestions:
1. d/l'ed the boot-20000407.img and update-disk-20000407.img and done
the linux update routine at boot from floppy... nothing doing.
2. checked to make sure that RedHat/base/hdlist includes a reference
to the basesysem rpm, and it seems to, but lots of the hdlist is binary
so it's hard to tell. My CD also includes RedHat/RPMS/basesystem-6.0-
4.noarch.rpm

So I'm thoroughly stumped at this point? Anyone ever dealt with this?

Subject: pam_tally + faillog
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 20:12:05 GMT

I'm trying to setup a RH Linux 7.0 with pam_tally in order to limit the
number of access tries to an X number of attempts by adding the
following two lines to the pam "login" configuration file:

auth required /lib/security/pam_tally.so
account required /lib/security/pam_tally.so per_user deny=X no_reset

, where X is any number of tries.

After setting up the file, I logged out and using a non-root account I
mistyped the account's password several times (>3). At about the fourth
or fifth time, I typed in the right password, and was able to login
without any problem. This was repeated a few times.

According to the documentation, the lines entered are the supposedly
needed ones, but there seems to be a problem with them. I also tried it
having a second terminal open to check the number of failures occurring
using the "faillog -u 'username'" command. But its output maintained
the number of failures equal to 0 everytime.

Am I doing something stupidly wrong here, or is this an error regards to
the faillog command + files or the pam_tally module?

Thanks, ajam

Hello, I'm trying to get networking to work in the new 2.4 kernel. I
was want to know if anyone was sucessfull with the 2.4 install. I've
compiled and installed the 2.4 kernel. Everything seemd to be working
fine; except that I'm having trouble, getting network devices to
work. It is difficult to describe because I do not know exactly where
the problem is. I configured in network interfaces and cards as
modules. I have two 10/100 fast ethernet cards. when I do a netstat,
unix domain sockets seem to work fine, but if I try to ping, I'll get:

ping: wrote hal 64 chars, ret=-1
ping: sendto: Network is unreachable

Looking in "/var/logs", at the "boot.log" file, the only indication
that the network devices are not working properly are these
messages:

The same errors come up in the "messages" log. OK, I got that, but
why are the devices not working properly. This message is js
just a fact finding one to see how other people compiled thier kernels
and got networking to work. Thanks in advance for any help.

the ipchains-HOWTO is a good place to start. Also there is a handy
little program called pmfirewall that will help you set it up. You can

the ipchains-HOWTO is a good place to start. Also there is a handy
little program called pmfirewall that will help you set it up. You can
find it at http://www.pointman.org/

This is currently one of the most asked questions on the Linux newsgroups.
You will find the answer on http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hbits5.html

Subject: Win98 + Win2K + RedHat 7.0 boot problem
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 14:39:15 -0600

I installed Win98, Win2K and RH7 on the same computer as:
        /hda1 FAT32 Win98 2GB
        /hda2 Linux / 1.3GB
        /hda5 Linux /home 0.5GB
        /hda6 L_Swap <SWAP> 0.2GB
        /hdb1 NTFS Win2K 8GB

First of all, I fdisk'ed C: (Win98), D: (Win2K) and the rest for Linux. Then I
installed W98 on C and Win2K on D and they are dual bootable.

Last week, I got RH7 disk and installed it to the reserved space. At first, I
installed LILO on /hda2 to keep Windows are intact and booted Linux from
floppy successfully. At the same time, I could access Win98 and Win2K from
Linux after mounting.

Bad things happened last night, I changed the lilo configuration and tried to
boot from /hda1 instead. After rebooting, I saw a GUI selection Windows or
Linux. When I selected Windows, it flashed and came back to the selection
Windows again. When I selected Linux, it booted from hard disk, obviously
faster than from floppy. BUT I could not mount Win98 and Win2K. :-( All my
data in windows are not accessible any more. I could change the boot sector to
/hda2, and boot from Linux floppy, but still could not mount Win98 and Win2K.

Now I worry about how I can boot to Windows 'cause I saved all important data
there. I can even stand with boot linux from floppy, taking about 10 minutes,
but bringing my Windows back.

Thanks in advance,

Henry
