Hi
I'm running RH7 on an i586, for some reason, my monitor won't power off
after the screensaver timout (say, 5 minutes, which I set with GNOME
control center). How can I deal with that?
Thanks in advance.
Yours,
Nev

Since I upgraded to 2.4.0 whenever I turn on my notebook and I am not
connected
to the nework dhcp request takes a long couple of minutes...this was not
the case
before and it is very annoying. Is there a way to adjust the dhcp
wait/delay time?
Thanks

Babe,
You really ought to give us some more information; what does happen, when
you try to "make" the application ? Surely there are one or two error

I had the sme Problems, too. Try to set uid for pppd and kppp. This is the way I
solved the problem. If you don't want everybody to use kppp, create a new usergroup
and and let it own kppp and pppd (perhaps it must own the modem device, too). This
is the way I solved the problem.

I flailed with my CMI8330 sound card for almost a week, including trying
to install ALSA drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org) which looked very
promising because they claim they support that sound card, but nothing
worked. I ended up going and buying an Creative Ensoniq PCI sound card
for $30 and it works fine. If you search around news group postings you
will find that many many people have problems with the CMI8330.

I'm sorry, I don't understand - how can you make a dhcp request when not
connected to a network of some sort? Do you mean when you're using

When I redid my config doing "make menuconfig", I saw something about

supported but the driver appears to not work.
I know it's not the "linux way" to go out and buy something to make it
work, but I really wanted to get sound working in Linux and had
exhausted all options. At least I was buying hardware and not software.

(3) seems wrong. If you copy over a compressed filesystem without
uncompressing it first then I'd expect the mount to fail. Or have
I misinterpreted what you're saying here?
But other than that I can't see anything wrong with what you're trying

Yes of course, but one can only mount one of those partitions (devices)
to that single mount point at the same time.
fi I have both a cdwriter (/dev/scd0) and a regular cd drive (/dev/scd1)
Now depending on which cddrive I put the cd in I can access it after;
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom or
mount /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom.

I had this exact same problem. I discovered that when you disable the
hdd in the BIOS, you can boot from a win98 bootdisk, but of course you
can't see the hdd to fix it!
The solution that I found was (after many re-installs) that my /boot
partition was too big. I had read somewhere that it had a maximum size of
16MB, so during install I 'requested' 16MB, but was granted '25MB', I
guess cause of the number of sectors per partition. Anyway, I resized my
/boot partition to 15MB (actual size) and now booting to win98 works fine.
Of course, I'm not sure how to resize the /boot partition without
reinstalling Linux.
Hope this helps

I had installed linux onto the second parition of my second IDE disk
(first partition was swap). I had also installed BeOS onto the second
partition of my first IDE disk. Everything was groovy. Yesterday I
installed Win98 onto the first partition of my first disk. I then tried to
reboot into Linux, but it froze when it couldn't mount the root partition.
I used a linux rescue disk (Toms boot floppy) and verified that the
partition could not be mounted. e2fsck wouldn't work and suggested
invoking 'e2fsck -b 8193' which didn't work. None of the filesystem
utilities on the boot floppy could examine the ext2 filesystem. (The empty
linux filesystems on my second disk were fine and could be mounted.)
I then went into BeOS which was able to mount the ext2 filesystem! All
my files are there. I tried copying these files off onto a new vfat
partition or even onto the BeOS partition, but BeOS would freeze or fail
to copy parts of large files.
How can I rescue the linux filesystem? Are there any rescue disks
especially good at repairing ext2 filesystems? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

The new system is iptables. However you can still use ipchains if you
want to, you just have to load the ipchains module first, by issuing
the command:
insmod ipchains

I'm pretty sure Netscape is looking for a news server when it does
this.
Look in your ~/.netscape/preferences.js for a line that looks like this:
user_pref("network.hosts.nntp_server", "news.something.com");
If you know the IP address of your news server, add it to /etc/hosts.

Subject: Mouse double-click speed
Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 18:17:23 +0100
Hi everybody.
I can set the acceleration and threshold of the mouse with xset or
graphical tools such as those of Gnome and KDE, but none of them
let me to set the speed of the double-click.
I've read various HOWTO and man pages but I've found nothing about
the double-click speed.
Anyone can help me?
Thank you.
