I have downloaded the HOWTO on CD Burning. It says I have to fake out
the kernel that my IDE-ATAPI CD/R-W is really a SCSI. I load the
ide-scsi module, but it talks about other changes (hdb=ide-scsi). Is
there a utility that will tell me what is hda, hdb, hdc, etc. or do I
need to "pop the hood off" of my PC and look for those master/slave
jumpers??!!

Has anyone done a CD-Burner utility yet that lets me keep the IDE
stuff? Even command line I could live with!

Thanks.

Go here and get the ide patch for your kernel.

Not sure about the answer to this one, but I'm currently ignoring the
warning and continuing to do the initial mount as read-only.

Change your /etc/fstab / entry to something like this:

/dev/hda1 / reiserfs defaults 0 0

The last 0 should prevent fsck from running on that partition.

Reiserfs is good!

You can download the proper video card driver at the Intel website.
Also, if you are using Red Hat, you can `upgrade' to 7.0, it should
recognize the chipset and give you higher resolution modes. redhat
site has a section devoted to the intel810 chipset.

I have set up cvs on a server running on a home LAN (2 computers with a
cross over). As far as I can tell I have followed instructions correctly
for setting up a cvs server using pserver, and read instruction spectific
to my distro RH 6.2.

>From a client I can login successfully using
        cvs -d :pserver:cvs@<server>:/usr/local/cvsroot login

but when I try to checkout , doing
        cvs -d :pserver:cvs@<server>:/usr/local/cvsroot checkout
<repository>

I get
cvs server: cannot open /root/.cvsignore:Permission denied
cvs [server aborted]: can't chdir(/root):Permisison denied

I have double checked that I have set permissions in $CVSROOT according to
my instructions.

Please help !

If the boot manager loads hdc1 you have to install Lilo in hdc1, not

Doug

I am doing these for RH 7.0 and the Released 2.4.0 kernel. A little while
back I did it with Kernel 2.2 and RH 6 on a machine with out any SCSI
card.

You might follow my thread about boot hanging at init from this morning.

As far as finding out where things are: you can 'hdparm -i /dev/hda ' to
see the drive setups.

The essential part is to rebuild the kernel to add SCSI emulation for IDE,
and drop the ide CDROM support.

Patrick

Watch me thread to 'Kernel hangs at init to see what else

Look at SlackWare. I had very little trouble getting a usable

Yes that is the point of the whole excercise. You can't get in because
you lost the key (ie password) so you try and remove the lock.

When you use lilo there is a whole lot of otherways to accomplish the
same, but sometimes the default setup blocks them.

AFAIK when a determined attacker has physical access to a machine there
is very little that will stop him from getting access to the data stored
on that machine.
Apperently there are hardrdives that self-destruct when tampered with.
The only otherway is encryption. That will make access to the data
meaningless without the proper decryption-keys.

In most cases the following procedure is "sufficient":
* lock the computer casing as to prevent physical access/removal of the drive
* secure the casing to a wall to prevent complete removal
* allow the computer to only boot from the harddrive
* secure bios with password
* secure the bootloader (lilo) with password
* keep all software up-to-date
More paranoid:
* encrypt sensitive data/use the encrypted partitions feature in linux.
Take a look at http://www.kerneli.org for more info on that feature.

Fixed it by restarting lpd
   /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd restart

Ugly :(

No reason other than it has always been the CD drive and I'm the kind of
person who only changes what has to be changed. If I did that I guess I
would have to change my setups in OS/2, Windows, Suse and Caldera. It
feels like it could turn into a mini nightmare.

This throws a syntax error I guess because it supposed to be preceded by
other = blablabla

Let me ask you this. I want to get this thing to boot directly from
BootManager rather than chaining through the Suse Lilo because I need to
install Win4Lin on the Caldera partition. I already have it on the Suse
partition but as you have probably determined I am migrating away from that.

Someone suggested just installing Win4Lin (which modifies the kernel) and
then just outting the modified kernel back on the Suse partition to replace
the one being used now for Caldera. Theoretically this should work but if
I remember well, Win4Lin reboots at least once during the installation
process therefore it would hang, right?

In other words, I only need to set the Linux box up, put the server info at the
client (Alpha station) side, and off it goes?

I looked at my work box to see what its settings are (my home machine is
where the troubles are) and see that it is set to /dev/hda.

I'm hoping that I see one of the choices from my partition table below.
If I see the /dev/hda setting instead, which one of the following
entries should I choose?

============================================================
Device Boot Start End Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 246 6 FAT16
/dev/hda2 247 1023 5 Extended
/dev/hda3 1024 3700 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 3701 3739 82 Linux Swap
/dev/hda5 247 1023 b Win 95 FAT32

Then the LILO code is not in the MBR and not on hda1.
Activate the partition where you put LILO instead.

(PS. if you don't know where it is, look at /etc/lilo.conf. The line
 boot=
 describes where it is.)
