It is a common problem under Mandrake. Some of the files in the home directory
end up with the wrong owner; that is, they are owned by root instead of by the
user.

If this is the problem, one way to fix it is to log in as root, cd to the
user's home directory, and run chown -R user.user * && chown -R user.user .*
substituting the name of the user for the word user in the above, of course.
The -R makes it recursive, and the .* gets those hidden files that the *
doesn't get.
Hope this helps.

If the disk was not already in a DOS format, the /q option may be the problem.
If you really need the disk formatted (instead of just removing the
first letter of the names of the files so the disk appears to be blank under
DOS,) you will need to format it without the /q option. This may have nothing
to do with the problem, but I hope it helps

In the course of installing Linux on a friend's Gateway Solo 2150
laptop, I broke its ability to boot Windows.

We created a partition for Linux by splitting the original Windows 98
partition with fips. Goback -- a disk backup utility -- is installed
on the Windows partition. I think Goback usurps the standard Windows
boot code, replacing with something unconventional that conflicts with
LILO. When I changed the default boot partition with LILO, I believe
I inadvertently screwed up Goback's boot code. In any event, now when
we boot dos we get stuck at a prompt that says (roughly)

Type the name of the command interpreter (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
A>

Perhaps one first step toward fixing this would be to replace the
bootsector with one that boots a Windows partition running Goback.
Can anyone provide me with an image of such a bootsector? I believe
from Linux you can copy such a bootsector into the file named MBR with
this command:

dd if=/dev/hda of=MBR bs=512 count=1

(replace /dev/hda with the name of the boot device, if different).

Otherwise, does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know a Goback
guru?

Thanks.

Sure you can..if you can get on to the internet on another computer.
Go to http://pygmy.penguin.cz and download pygmy Linux. It takes about
6 floppies to get it. It is structured for internet access and is very
easy to install through DOS.There is no need to partition the hard
drive. After you have it installed and get onto the internet with it,
you can download the xf86 config file for a graphic mode. I downloaded
it on Friday afternoon and was on the internet (without external help)
on Saturday afternoon, and today I have the graphics running.I had
Caldera linux and tried for a long time to get it going and finally gave
up, wiped my hard drive clean, and started all over again with Pygmy.
It needs I believe, about 150M of HD space.

I have a thinkpad 701C (the "Butterfly") with 24 MB of RAM and a 500
MB HD. I have finally gotten the floppy drive for it and would welcome
any advice as to a good distribution to do an NFS install of onto this
machine. My goal is to set this up as a machine to run KDE, Organize, a
word processsor, etc. Obviously the more disk space left for the
applications the better. I can not easily get a CD-ROM hooked up
directly to the machine. I have tried the RedHat and Suse boot disks and
both recognize the Ethernet card, hence my determination to use an NFS
install.

Hi All,

Two questions to ask:

1)I'm using Slackware3.0(kernel 2.0.0), but cant mount /mnt/cdrom and
/mnt/floppy. I can see my cdrom using dmesg command like-- hdd:CS-R38 ATAPI
CD-ROM Drive, also under /dev--i can see cdrom--->dev/hdd, then when i use
mount /mnt/cdrom commnad, it respond " mount:mount point /mnt/cdrom does not
exit"(my setting in /etc/fstab---/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauot,owner 0
0).

2)when i exec mount /fd0/floppy, system respond "fs type vfat not supported

get better sources to do so('cause i read some HOWTOs but dont explain

Try
mount /dev/cdrom
and
mount /dev/fd0
Those work for me in Mandrake.

There's a DOS version (presumably compatible with Linux versions) at...
ftp://ftp.uv.es/pub/mirror2/DebianCD/1.3.1/utilities/md5sum.exe
(in case that doesn't work I've put it up at
<http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~dufas/md5sum.exe>).

- - -
usage: md5sum [-bv] [-c [file]] | [file...]
Generates or checks MD5 Message Digests
-c check message digests (default is generate)
-v verbose, print file names when checking
-b read files in binary mode
The input for -c should be the list of message digests and file names
that is printed on stdout by this program when it generates digests.
- - -

If you don't get the correct value the first time, use the -b option (I
had to use that to successfully verify a Debian CD image).

It depends a bit how you want to use the serial connection.
The possibilities include

1. SLIP or PPP with one machine as a server for http, ftp,
telnet etc and the other running a browser such as Netscape.

2. File and print server type sharing.

3. Dumb terminal connection, where one is just a terminal
for the other.

4. Mini bulletin board type systems, where one uses a
terminal with file download capability (eg kermit) and the
other acts as a host which may be able to upload or download
files.

I have done a bit with (3) using a Linux box as host, but I
haven't got my system sorted out properly, though it works.

Basically, look in the serial how-to for basic stuff,
including cable. While there is a lot of stuff on setting up
a modem, you can find the null-modem stuff in there.

Other possibly relevant HOWTOs - net, nfs, PPP,
serial-laplink (new), smb, text-terminal.

Good luck

Peter

I'm not sure if it is or not, but at the point where you're getting a
dual-CPU machine, you really do want to recompile anyway.

> Now a question about performance, I know every application might not
> utilize both processors, and I won't see twice the performance over 1

Expect a single application to perform the same as on a single 233, and
two applications to perform as if they each had a 233. There is some
overhead, but from a "seat-of-the-pants", that's about what you should
expect.

(BTW, you can easily and safely increase the bus on a P233 to 75 MHz, which
will give you very nice results, as you're getting a much higher bandwidth
to everything off of the CPU.)

It really depends on your app. If your app is I/O-bound, a system with a
good SCSI drive would win out. If it's CPU-bound, then the system with the
fastest CPU would win.

> How would the dual board function as a server compared to the others?

Depends on what you're serving. ; ) Chances are that it will do much
better.

Check the SETI page, it has it broken down by processor.
