The bottom line here is that netscape 6 is dreadful for
everyday use. It is a monstrous and disgraceful memory
hog. I'm stuck with an old p166 laptop at work and would
have to go and make a cup of tea while netscape 6
started up and then it would crash every five minutes.
Opera is supposed to be better but I found that to be
less than stable. I'm currently useing konqueror from
KDE 2.01. It is a damn site faster than all the rest
but does nice things like encryption as well. I can
heartily reccomend it. It's also not a bad file
manager.

It uses the lowest common denominator, VGA. 640x400 16 colors.
But most often using the text based configuration tool is much easier,
/usr/bin/X11/xf86config. Maybe you select things that are impossile. Is
there a message on the display detailing the reason for failure?
> dave

A signature is seperated from the message body with line consisting of
the sequence HYPHEN HYPHEN SPACE as below. That allows email programmes and
newsreaders to seperate them from the body of the message in replies,
follow-ups and such. It is pretty useless to receive your own contact
information in messages addressed to you. It is very illogical but
somehow the sequence "-- " evolved as the standard seperator.
Warning more of the same ;-)
To quote son-of-rfc1036:
http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/outerspace/netnews/son-of-1036.html
<<If a poster or posting agent does append a signature to an
article, the signature SHOULD be preceded with a delimiter
line containing (only) two hyphens (ASCII 45) followed by
one blank (ASCII 32). Posting agents SHOULD limit the
length of signatures, since verbose excess bordering on
abuse is common if no restraint is imposed; 4 lines is a
common limit.>>
Hence, posting software MUST prevent the user from using excessively
long signatures, or at least warn the user against it. A widely
accepted standard is the so-called McQuary limit: up to 4 lines, each up
to a maximum of 80 characters.
NOTE: While signatures are arguably a blemish, they are a
well-understood convention, and conveying the same
information in headers exposes it to mangling and makes it
rather less conspicuous. A standard delimiter line makes
it possible for reading agents to handle signatures specially
if desired. (This is unfortunately hampered by
extensive misunderstanding of, and misuse of, the delimiter.)
NOTE: The choice of delimiter is somewhat unfortunate, since
it relies on preservation of trailing white space, but
it is too wellestablished to change. There is work underway to
define a more sophisticated signature scheme as part
of MIME, and this will presumably supersede the current
convention in due time.
NOTE: Four 75-column lines of signature text is 300
characters, which is ample to convey name and mail-address
information in all but the most bizarre situations.

I have installed mandrake.....did everything by the book....when the screen
comes up i get a window in the centre which seems to be fragments of about
20 similar windows. When i move the window from side to side it gets better
or worse until it disappears off the edge of the screen....then all looks ok
until i activate an icon at the bottom of the screen and up comes 20
expanded little windows instead of one. Any help appreciated.
I have erased mandrake and reinstalled with same problem.....
my next idea is to erase mandrake and install red hat.....

Also while the herd mentality is certainly there, I think the
nature of software interfaces and how they tend to interfere
with free choice is far more critical. It's not enough to merely
have the "biggest fraternity", you also need a way to trap people
in once they've made a bad initial decision.

I've upgraded from 2.2.18 to 2.4.1 and everything works fine _except_
my machine no longer powers off on halt.
I'm using [[ append="apm=power-off" ]] in /etc/lilo.conf and get the
following lines from dmesg:
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.14)
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe (power off active).
(which are the same as they were in 2.2.x).
Not a show stopper - but any tips would be appreciated. (I can provide
more info if required).

Hi..
i have an ISA pnp pcmcia adapter in my pc and haven't been able to
bring it up on 2.4 (it works fine on 2.2.18 + pcmcia-cs)
the pnp stuff looks ok, i can see the card detected.. but i'm
not sure how to configure the kernel for pcmcia. I set almost all
the pcmcia options to 'y' so they'd be built into the kernel. When i
insert a card into one of the slots, there is no beeping to let me
know it's been recognized. If i run 'cardinfo' it says it can't find
the proper bus.
Anyone had any success getting pcmcia to run in 2.4, especially how
you configured the kernel would be a great help.. thanks!

I'm experiencing problems when halting my Linux box (2.2.5-15 kernel):
the
next time the OS starts, I frequently get messages such as :
<dev> was not clenly unmounted. Check forced.
which is clearly not good.
The problem occurs when halting from both the prompt and gdm.
I've also experienced it using shutdown.
However, I've never had the problem when rebooting and switching the box
off manually, which is pretty weird since the halt script hardly does
anything
different in that case.
I also tried to alter the halt script a bit, especially around the
mount/umount
commands, but nothing's ever worked.
Thanks in adavnce,
Ju.

I had an Epson 740 and used it with the USB backport for the 2.2
kernel (this was on SuSE 6.2, I don't remember the exact kernel
version). I'm also using a Redhat 7 system to connect to my digital
camera via USB.
The problem you describe sounds as if the usb modules are not loaded.
You can check with /sbin/lsmod, this should show something like this:
...
usb-uhci 19052 0 (unused)
usbcore 42088 1 [usb-uhci]
...
On Redhat 7.0, these two modules are loaded during boot, but you will
also need the printer module to talk to the printer.
You should be able to load it with "/sbin/modprobe printer".
I hope you are aware of http://www.linux-usb.org/ and especially the
Linux USB Guide.
I'm still trying to figure out how to load the modules automatically
when they are needed. One way is to add "alias char-major-180
printer" to /etc/conf.modules (on SuSE) or /etc/modules.conf (on
Redhat) and edit /lib/modules/.../modules.dep to tell that the printer
module needs usb-uhci, but I'm not sure if that's the best way.
Hope this helps,
Rainer

Tape devices don't use file systems so you don't mount them.
Just read and write the data directly to the device.
