Oh yes. I've never tried to change it using the source so while the

Just did a kernel upgrade from 2.0.x to 2.2.16. No hardware change.
Compiled in sound support. It's a soundblaster and I specified same
isp, port, dma, etc as with the old system. Sound seems to initialize
(per syslog and /dev/sndstat) but I get "/dev/audio: No such device".
Or any other device. Yet in kernel config (xconfig), there was no place
to specify /dev/audio support (like there used to be in previous kernels).
What am I missing here?
thanks,

Of course not. You can only mount a CD if it has a
filesystem on it. An "unformatted" CD has no filesystem and,
thus, can't be mounted. That doesn't mean you can't write to
it, though.

A mounted filesystem in a CD-ROM, of any description, is, by
definition, read-only.

Once I'd set up my burner with the HowTo, the cdrecord man

I'm having a problem getting my 60 GIG hard drive to work on Redhat 6.2.
I have a promise ATA-66 controller card that is connected to the hard
drive. I think Redhat sees the controller card and the hard drives.
Redhat is running on a seperate SCSI hard drive. This is the main drive.
Can someone help me configure this to work? Here is a copy of my dmesg:

Subject: Cannot start gnome through gdm, only through xinit
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 23:54:38 GMT
Hi,
Until today, gnome was working fine--I could log in from gdm
started at boot (initdefault 4). Today, I installed XFree86 4.0.1.
Now, when I try to start a gnome session from the gdm login, the
screen goes black and then returns to the gdm login. Same for
root. Starting gnome using gnome-session after xinit from command
line works fine.
No errors appear in any files in user's (or root's) home directory.
I can log in to 'failsafe' session from gdm.
I guess its permissions or something. Hopefully there are some
errors logged somewhere...
How can I make this work ?
Thanks,
Kevin

Sounds like your fonts or your path or something
in your porfile that refers to fonts is messed up.
Try making a backup of your .bashrc and .bash_profile
and copy another users .bashrc and .bash_profile to your

Found the problem. The directory structure was changed in XFree86
4.0.1.
It comes with an installer script that "fixes up" many links but there
is a
problem in that /var/X11R6/lib/xdm is a symbolic link to
/etc/X11/lib/xdm
...which is in turn a symbolic link to /var/X11R6/lib/xdm
I removed the symlink /var/X11R6/lib/xdm, created a directory, and
copied
the Xsession script from the directory where I had saved the old files
before
the new install of XFree86. The Xsession script is where the
.xsession-errors
file is created, this is why I never saw errors.
I can now start a gnome session by logging in through gdm.
Thanks for reading and for your helpful intentions!

It entirely depends on your configuration, what the message is, etc.
For example, are you trying to use DHCP to retrieve @Home configuration?
Are you trying to use pump to read information from a DHCP office network?
etc.
Please repost more information, including:
1) The exact error message, if possible
2) The NIC card make/model
3) The kernel version you're using. (Which can affect the outcome, if
you're using the drivers that came with the kernel source.)
4) Does it work in Static configuration?
etc.

I run Slackware 7.0 on one --I wanted a distro I could keep small. Again,
a CD install, not NFS. The Slack 7.0 boot (bareapm.i)/root (color)/and
pcmcia disks had no trouble whatever with the Linksys pcmcia NIC I put in
the thing, so I suppose and NFS install would have been possible. X runs
smoothly, but with the lack of horsepower from a 486DX4/75 and 40 Megs of
memory, I use fvwm2 as the window manager. Wouldn't even consider
inflicting anything big, slow and bloated like KDE on it. It can run
WordPerfect 8 OK, though a tad slow on the scrolling and screen redraws.
Star Office is completely beyond it. Netscape is usable; streaming media
isn't (too slow). Sound works with the soundblaster (sb) module loaded and
parameters set for 8-bit. The laptoppy stuff is mostly OS independent,
except for the hibernate feature which will only operate with a FAT16 and
requires 2X the space of the physical RAM.
If you load Suse on the 701, you'll have to do some seriously ruthless
package selection, since their so-called "minimum" install takes up ca.
600 Megs. You won't have much trouble keeping Slack (or Debian) to under
half that. Also, all the Suse precompiled kernels with APM support are
optimized for pentiums. So the first thing you'll find yourself doing is
loading the generic ide non-APM kernel (which supports 386/486's) and then
compiling yourself a custom kernel with APM for a 486. Takes the poor
little 701 between 5-7 hours to compile and install a custom kernel &
modules.
But in general the 701 is a good little machine. Use any of the smaller
distros, use the lightest possible X confguration, rely mostly on
text-mode and you'll like it just fine.

ide0 and ide1 are usually the on-board IDE controllers of your Mobo.
What kernel are you using? 2.2.XX? If so, you will need to patch
your kernel and recompile it so that it will recognize the promise

I am new to Linux and would like to run it with my Windows 98 too so I have
a choice between a version of Linux and Windows 98 and maybe even Win 2000,
not decided though.
I however, have a 20 GIG hard drive wanting to split it up allowing my
Windows allowed to have 10 and Linux to have 10 partitioned. I was going to
use PatitionMagic 5.0 to do the backing up of my current files on my
computer and the partitioning.
Next, I really am confused on which version of Linux to choose. I am curious
as to what other people recommend for flavors of Linux. Also, I have
componets such as a 3Com WinModem and a UMAX Parallel Astra 2000 scanner. I
read in the HTML docs that these were not supported. I can understand the
WinModem, but I don't understand the scanner. But, all of my other componets
should work fine according to the information on linuxdocs.org
So, which flavor of Linux do you recommend to the Linux newbie and is the
eaisiest, most hardware supported and has pretty cool GUIs and can
administrate thing sort of like Windows can.

systems with TekRam SCSI controllers. I got the same "CPUID Serial number"
kernel panic when I tried to boot the SCSI drive with the 2.2.14 kernel
installed with RedHat 6.2. The CPUID serial number is an Intel Pentium III
"feature" that the kernel tries to disable in the AMD Duron cpu, obviously
unsuccessfully.
I got around both the CPUID-induced kernel panic and my inability to boot
from the Tekram SCSI controller by installing an old slow 8 GB EIDE hard
drive and building a new kernel as follows: Load the RedHat (6.2?)
distribution onto the EIDE drive. When it tells you to remove the floppy so
you can reboot from the hard drive, just leave the boot floppy in and reset
the system. Boot the system in "rescue" mode, so it uses the Linux kernel
from the install floppy, but uses the root file system from the hard drive.
Rebuild the Linux kernel in /usr/src/linux with the drivers that you select
for your system with "make config" (or "make menuconfig"...). The resulting
kernel can then be mapped for booting by LILO. The LILO message you
mentioned is in the LILO documentation -- the second stage boot loader
failed. Some experimenting with "/etc/lilo.conf" and your partition layout
can fix this problem. Since the system dual-boots with Windows, there is a
good chance that your Linux boot partition is not within the 1024 cylinder
limit. Again, the LILO documentation (even the mini-HOWTO!) is going to be
a lot more helpful that I can be here.
Good Luck!

aaa...but thats a no-no...even *trying* to imply that *anything* would not
work in Linux ;-)
i just came from comp.os.linux.advocay and there you'll get nuked to hell
just to say that you have been running Windows 98 for 3 1/2 days without a
reboot (as i have)...these people really do need to get a girlfriend ;-)
As to xfree86 4.0...well i have tried it on my SuSE Linux 6.4 with about the
same problems that youre describing, it isnt simple ready for day to day
use, still very much beta, im so! close to getting back to Windows -only
im sure some "guru" can tell you to make a amnesia fix to that problem, but
for the rest of us, its re-install (or de-install) that is the name of the
game when something isnt working in linux (and that happens alot of times)
