You can reset resolution in a running X session with <ctrl><alt>+ and
<ctrl><alt>-
There are several setup utilities for the X window system, but I don't know
which phat uses. Try Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, xf86config.
You can also edit XF86Config by hand, find your Screen section and then
eliminate resolutions higher thatn the one you want from the Modes line of
the Display Subsection. There may be several screen sections, one for each
driver on you system, make sure you edit the one that you are using.
Here's the relevant section in my XF86Config:
Section "Screen"
Driver "accel"
Device "Rage LT"
Monitor "VeiwSonic A90"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection

Subject: Display problem
Date: Sun, 04 Feb 2001 15:09:38 GMT
Hi!
I have installed Red Hat 7.0 on an Asus m8000 notebook. Almost
everything works fine. The current problem i'm fighting with is that X
goofs up the display when xscreensaver kicks in. The screen blacks out
and the only way to see anything again is to toggle the LCD/CRT mode
(notebook hardware) back and forth. After toggling this I can see my
desktop in a totally corrupted mode. The only way to get everything back
to normal is to restart X. The graphics adapter is a SMI LynxEM.
What exactly does the screensaver do when it takes control over the
display? And is there some way of getting X to reinitialize the graphics
device without restarting?
All suggestions are welcome.

Fredrik

I installed RH7.0 on my PC as a workstation consfiguration (no other OS on
it). I installed directly from the 1st CD (I was never prompted for the
second CD in the installation process).
Now, when I want to add a Telnet server via linuxonf (using the linuxconf
pseudo-graphic mode), I get an error mesage saying that:
"We can't installed [sic] the package(s) because they require resources from
un-available packages".
The list includes:
rpmlib(CompressFileNames)
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix)
How can I tell which packages are missing? Where can I get them?
TIA,

you need to edit /etc/ld.so.conf and add all of the directories which
have shared libraries. Then run /sbin/ldconfig, this should solve the
problem.

Those are for booting dos/windows on the second drive, but I see that your
windows is on the first drive.
If you want it to boot up with normal video instead of the framebuffer,
change the "vga = 791" to "vga = normal". After that you will need to
configure X. Slackware doesn't use Xconfigurator; it uses XF86Setup (which
doesn't exist in Xfree86 version 4.x)

It IS below cylinder 1023... but it just happens to be on the primary
channel SLAVE disk. That's where hdb1 is, right? The mentality I have
regarding O/S's is that they should install and work - it doesn't matter if
they are servers or workstations. This LILO cr*p has been going on for too
many years and dumbasses like me are still getting stuck on it.
The more I use Linux the more I appreciate Windows.

Only if you have an older lilo. If you get the latest one, this limitation no

Hmm...
Then why is the default:
CONFIG_IDE=y
???
I really don't think that's the problem.
On the other hand, then what is the problem?
I also have one box ( a dell latitude cpi PII 233) that doesn't load
the 2.4.0 or 2.4.1 kernel. The other boxes do it just fine...
Does anybody have a clue what could be wrong???

Hi John,
Although I don't have a fast answer to why you're having the problems,
I will say that LILO is no different than, say, the boot manager in Windows NT.
So, LILO is not what is making your Linux loading experience worse than Windows.
That being said, if you obtain the latest version of LILO, the 1023 cylinder
limit disappears, so you would be able to eliminate that issue (if it is an
issue in your case).
I've loaded Linux on several PCs and always found it to really be smoother
than Windows. I've even seen Linux recognize hardware that Windows has had
trouble recognizing (really exotic stuff, like COM2 and LPT2). :-)
I hope you'll stick with it a little longer. I think you'll find in hindsight
it was probably something simple being overlooked.

Bo,
In your /etc/rc.local file, enter something like this at the end of the
file:
/usr/sbin/smbd -D && echo "Starting SAMBA in daemon mode"
/usr/sbin/nmbd -D && echo "Starting SAMBA Network Neigborhood"
Of course, point to your location of SMBD and nmbd.

If you are running RedHat:
Look in /etc/rc.d/init.d for a file called 'smb'. If it's not there, you
need to install samba.
Then look in /etc/rc.d/rcX.d where X is 3 and 5. You should see files
called LXXsmb where 'L' is either K or S, and XX is a number. If you see
the files with 'K', then rename them to be S instead of K.
If you don't see the files there at all, then create them by symbolically
linking /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb to the SXXsmb name in rcX.d directories.

Since I am no Linux veteran, I took the easy way out. I moved the ribbon

Hello,
I don't know about other POP3 sever, but qpopper from eudora.com
works with all kind of M$ clients with no problem. Get the free source
version.
Read the docs compile/install it and change your (x)inetd.conf and restart
inetd,...done..:-)
Good luck
