i just installed mandrake linux. my x windows system worked fine yesterday
but today it won't start, presumably due to this error:
_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
does anyone know how to resolve this problem? it's driving me insane!
thank you very much,

There is a section called Documentation into the sources. There you can
found that list.

I think that that IDE controller is a Promise. If this it's true,
there is support.

Lilo setup problem

Hi...Here's the setup
sda- main boot drive (os/2, windows etc)
hda5- Suse Linux
hdc1- Caldera Linux
OS/2' s Bootmanager is installed as primary bootmanager.
Entry 1 iof Bootmanager menu is Suse and 2 is Caldera.
Suse is on hda5 and from Bootmanager it fires up Lilo and it works.
Calder is on hdc1 but from Bootmanager it doesn't work.
Bootmanager is pointing to hdc1.
In desperation, I put Caldera in the Lilo menu on the Suse partition and
copiedt the bootimage to /boot of Suse's partition and this way I can
access Caldera.
Problem is that now I need to set up Win4lin on the Caldera partition but I
believe it will modify the lilo.conf there so it will never come up.
How can I get the Caldera distribution to boot from Bootmanager?
Here is the lilo.conf from Suse (the working one)
boot=/dev/hda5
vga = normal
read-only
prompt
timeout=100
disk = /dev/sda
bios = 0x80
disk = /dev/hda
bios = 0x81
disk = /dev/hdb
bios = 0x82
disk = /dev/hdc
bios = 0x83
default=caldera
#Added by TreLOS for Win4Lin kernel
image = /boot/win4lin
label = win4lin
root = /dev/hda5
# Caldera
image = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.14-modular
label = caldera
root = /dev/hdc1
And here is the one on Calder;s partition which doesn't work (comes up with
the LI and hangs):
boot=/dev/hdc1
timeout=250
default=linux
vga=normal
disk = /dev/sda
bios = 0x80
disk = /dev/hda
bios = 0x81
disk = /dev/hdb
bios = 0x82
disk = /dev/hdc
bios = 0x83
image = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.14-modular
label = linux
root = /dev/hdc1
THere have been some suggestions that this is a bios thingie but I do not
believe so because I can boot from the Rescue disk and boot from the hard
drive that way albeit using Grub. Here's the Grub menu.lst:
timeout = 15
splashscreen = (fd0)/boot/message
default = 0
title = Linux rescue (harddisk)
root = (hd2,0)
kernel = /boot/vmlinuz vga=274 debug=2 root=/dev/hdc1
title = Linux rescue (floppy)
root = (fd0)
kernel = /vmlinuz vga=274 debug=2 root=/dev/hdc1
Can anybody see what the problem is with this or suggest an easier way
(that doesn't involve changing a zillion settings). Maybe I could set up
Caldera to boot from Grub instead of Lilo?

I am running SuSE 6.3 linux on a pentimum machine and am having trouble

oppropiate files but to no avail. I have loaded the OSS sound system which
works but again only thru the commands soundon and soundoff as su. The KDE
cdplayer worksbas do the other kDE multimedia SuSE programs.
Anyone have any suggestions as to the mixer? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using kgcc or gcc to try and compile glibc 2.2?
Use kgcc. gcc-2.96 is _evil_.
You need a new modutils to probably get through a successful boot; and
util-linux to be able to login.
go to freshmeat.net and look for modutils and util-linux.
Compile 2.4.0 and install it.
Compile/install devfsd (if you're using devfs).
Compile/install modutils.
Compile/install util-linux.
Add vc/1-vc/8 entries to /etc/securetty.

Split the disk into multiple partitions using fips utility. It is in the

Subject: Unable to access or mount hard drive/floppy drive from Rescue mode
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 02:01:00 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to boot my Red Hat 6.2 system (PIII 450 Mhz, linux kernel
version 2.2.16) into Rescue mode by booting from the floppy drive, without
accessing the hard drive. (This is because when I boot into Rescue mode for
real, I will have just formatted the linux filesystems on the hard drive,
and the root partition will not contain a /etc/fstab file. Hence
all the filesystems, including the root filesystem, will not be able to be
mounted.) FYI, I'm using LILO to dual boot the machine between Win 98 and
Linux; hda1 is FAT32, while hda2 is linux swap and hda3 is linux native
(type 83),
With the Red Hat 6.2 Install CD in the local CD drive and the Red Hat
Install floppy in the floppy drive, I am able to boot into Rescue mode (by
entering "linux rescue" at the "boot:" prompt from the floppy). (Due to
lack of BIOS support, the system cannot be booted directly from the CD.)
My problem is that after I get the bash shell prompt, I am unable to
mount or otherwise access any of the filesystems on my hard drive
(/dev/hda1, /dev/hda3) or the floppy drive (/dev/fd0). In fact, in the
/dev
directory, the /dev/hda1, /dev/hda3 and /dev/fd0 devices don't even exist.
Does anybody know how I can boot into Rescue mode subject to the following
constraints:
- Booting cleanly from the floppy,
- Without accessing the hard drive during the boot process,
- But being able to manually access/mount the hard drive filesystems and the
floppy drive after booting.
Thanks,
Dave J.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
P.S. I also tried using the mkbootdisk command to create a boot floppy.
Booting from this floppy failed (kernel panic error message) when the root
filesystem could not be mounted.

Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my RPM RPM package to 4.0-4 from 3.0.4-0.48 (the
version of Red RPM included with Red Hat 6.2). I am running Kernel 2.2.16
and Red Hat 6.2 on a 450 Mhz PIII.
What I'm doing is booting into single-user mode (runlevel 3), and executing
the following command:
rpm -U -h -vv rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm
I get the following error message when I do this:
"Only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM

Can anybody help?
There must be some way to upgrade this package.

My firewall script loads the ip_tables, the ip_nat_ftp and the
ip_conntrack_ftp modules. My spelling is probably off, because I'm not at
work now.
Then I load the rulesets.

Install a newer version of modutils, as the /lib/modules/2.4.x directory
structure has changed a lot from the 2.2.x.
