Greets!

Got a Tekram DC-395U wanting to run a Yamaha CD-RW off of it on
Mandrake 7.2.

The scsi adaptor is recognized by the bootup scan but not by
linux. I've tried modprobe tmscsim.o but I get 'can't locate
module tmscsim.o'.

Just need a couple of tips here about installing the appropriate
driver.

Thanks!

I have an old computer which is an NEC ready(actually about four years
old-computers age fast) with 233 mhz and only 32 megs of ram which I
want to install Linux on. Problem is this sucker has a winmodem on it
and is only 4 gigs hard. Now I dont really see myself shelling out 70
dollars to buy a new modem for an old computer. Besides I have some good
apps that came factory installed that I cant really do without-like
works, and money, and some others that I use all the time. So I would
have to partition the disk to have two os's on it.
Question 1: I can only spare about two gigs is that enough for Linux now
and in the future? Keep in mind I want to do some programming on the
Linux platform.
Question 2. Can I do without a modem?
Question 3. Can I get a used and or cheap modem anywhere that will work
with Linux?
The alternative is for me to try and install Linux on a newer computer
with an NVIDIA mother, and graphics board, as well as a CD_RW and DVD.
Problem with this is that I do not have a plain CD Rom with this newer
computer, is that going to lead to difficulties for me. All Want is a
simple installation to get my feet wet with C programming in Linux.
Question 4. Am I better off installing on the newer machine with the
bigger memory (128megs) and hard drive (20 gigs)? Can I install from a
cd_rw?
Listen thank you very much ahead of time.

Hi,
first of all to note that I am writing this from my Windows machine, and
that I run Suse on my Linux box.
Now. I had a similar problem (since I had another adapter during the
installation). The only solution that worked for me was the recompilation of
the kernel. Since I did not wanted to change the default kernel, I made the
"classic" make xconfig, I selected the default values except of the SCSI
section. Then I made make dep, make modules make modules_install and that
was all!

RedHat 6.1 comes with this driver. Just set if up from netconf, or
the network section of linuxconf. Tell it to use the rtl8139 module.

Should be. You may have to be a bit selevtive in what you install if
you use a newer distro, but that is more the enough room to get a
decent linux system going in.

>Question 2. Can I do without a modem?

Sure, unless you want to get on the internet while using linux, and
don't have a braodband connection.

>Question 3. Can I get a used and or cheap modem anywhere that will work

Of course. Check out eBay. just look for an ISA modem, most of those
are not winmodems.

You can instal linux either off the CD/RW or the DVD.

Depends on how fast you want it to be. IT will be quite usabel on the
old machine, and even faster on the new one. If you want to play 3D
games ect. then the newer would be best.

When I try to mount a CD in my IDE drive, I get:
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:00, iso_blknum=16, block=32
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, yadda
yadda yadda

/etc/sysconfig/hwconf includes this for the CD ROM:
class: CDROM
bus: IDE
detached: 0
device: hdc
driver: ignore
desc: "ATAPI CDROM"

hdc is correct; it's the only drive on my secondary IDE controller.
The CD itself is good; it reads fine in my other system. The drive
is also good; I can read it when I boot to Winduhs.

/etc/fstab says this:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom /iso9660 user,ro,noauto,unhide

/mnt/cdrom does exist (with attributes drwxrwxr-x)
/dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/hdc (attributes br--r--r--)

lsmod shows vfat, fat, ide-cd, cdrom, and isofs as modules.

I have tried using just mount /dev/cdrom and manually
applying all the options:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Either way, I get the same error message. The kernel syslog
shows:
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:00, iso_blknum-16, block=32
FAT bread failed
last message repeated 2 times
last message repeated 2 times
last message repeated 2 times
...

What am I doing wrong???

Friends,

After scouring Deja and the HOWTOs, I'm sort of left with a
bunch of questions regarding getting my new Maxtor 40 GB
drive operating (Model 94091U8, if memory serves). I've seen
all sorts of info about patching the 2.2.13 kernel I'm
running and setting DMA modes with Maxtor's 100UPDT.exe
utility, etc. Sadly, I've also come across some advice on
Deja that I know is wrong! What I'm looking for is a website
or page that covers the various issues in a straightforward,
explanatory manner. Can anyone recommend such a resource to
me?

You don't have to do any setting from the Easy CD Creator. Just select
[File]->[Create CD from CD Image] and pick your ISO image file then
start burning.

When you say "normal IDE port", what do you mean? Is it otherwise
connected to an offboard controller? If so, you'll likely need a driver
for that card.

You'll want to upgrade the system from potato to woody.
Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list to point to a Debian mirror with woody,
then do an "apt-get update" and an "apt-get dist-upgrade". Make a backup
of any critical files first in case of any problems. I just did this on
one of my systems and had no significant problems at all.

Hello,

asuming only the path could be different on RH as this is how to create
a bootdisk with a SuSE pre compiled SMP kernel:

put in a floppy

fdformat /def/fd0u1440

put in 1. distro CD

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt
cd /mnt/disks
dd if=<filename_from_README_of_SMP_image> of=/dev/fd0 bs=8192

done...:-)

Good luck
