Howdie Wade,

U had the same problem as me but I was running RH 7.0. Due to our ignorant
is that we don't read enought to understand the OS and also be familiar with
the widgets. I went to Redhat website to get the info and they also direct
me to www.scyld.com/network/3c509.html eventually after much tinkering in X
window I found the problem. U need to get the OS to recognise your Nic card.
All the steps are in the X window.

a. Run your Kernel Configuration.
       i. Click Add
              1. Module Type - eth
              2. Define Module
                     Which Module type - eth0
                     Which Module - 3c509

b. Run Network Configuration
       i. Interfaces Tab
             1. eth0 - active is yes

c. Run Linuxconf
       i. Basic Host
             1. Net device - eth0
             2. Kernel module - 3c509
ii. The box beside the enable and manual must must be enable.

Pls refer to the above website for disabling the 3c509 pnp else u will have
a problem.

Tell me how it goes so that I can do a write up for all newbies.

Yea. NOT that it works with xlock, though. Upgrading to 4.0.1 broke
xlock somehow such that it won't recognize GL screensavers. I have Heavy
Gear II working so who cares...

I have a Tandberg 4220 SLR tape drive and it is supposed to work with
SLR2,3,4 tapes. It also works with MAGNUS 1.0 and 2.5 tapes. I found a
MAGNUS 1.35 tape, same format and size, but different capacity/length. Is
it possible that this tape will not work in my drive? I have not seen this
model of tape on ANY compatibility charts anywhere and suspect it is just an
old tape. I hope I am not doing something wrong, but when I do a:

# mt -f /dev/st0 tell
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sense
key Illegal request
Additional sense indicates Incompatible medium installed
/dev/st0: Input/output error
Is it possible I need to setpartition the tape or something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Anybody wanna trade a tape?

I suggest that you follow the Nvidia-OpenGL-Configuration HOWTO
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Nvidia-OpenGL-Configuration/index.html).

I did back when I had 0.9-5, and they worked. Later on, I upgraded to
0.9-6 and haven't had any problems. So, I would assume that following the
HOWTO using 0.9-6 to begin with should work as well.

I got a copy of Turbolinux server V6.0 when I bought a Linksys router. I
installed it on a Pentium computer and selected default for the most part. I
picked "all-in-one" option which supposedly would install "everything".

Now I am able to boot it up and log on as root. I also found a utility
called turbousercfg to create a new user account. However, when I try to log
on as this user, it keeps saying invalid password (but I know the password
was right). I also try to use rlogin localhost and it says connection
refused.

Any ideas as where I should look into?

Thanks.

Looks like you don't have enough memory for the install. I'd try Slackware,
which should only require 8 megs for the install.

Hi all,

I am trying to upgrade from gnumeric v0.38 to gnumeric 0.61 on my
system.
I'm downloading the sources, and compiling them locally on my machine.
One of the many, many other software packages that I have needed to
install/upgrade during this process is gnome-vfs-0.5.
When I run "./configure", I get this error:

checking for gconf-config... no
checking for GCONF - version >= 0.9.0... no
*** The gconf-config script installed by GCONF could not be found
*** If GCONF was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in

I don't even have the file gconf-config anywhere on my filesystem (I
looked with the "find" command), and I can't find any tarball out there
called gconf-*

Is GCONF part of some other software package/library upgrade?
Where can I find GCONF?

Thanks in advance!

If not, is there another way to get a ppp connection on the command

Subject: Re: Is swap really needed?
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 05:55:09 GMT

Excellent question, and I don't have an answer, but maybe some
observations.

1. I was running my RH7.0 box with 128M Ram and the dutiful
256 Meg of swap (the recommended 2x). As I was getting a
little cramped for RAM, I substituted 512M Ram, and didn't do
anything about changing from the existing 256 M swapper.

2. Now, my box sits here and (if I can believe the Mem: numbers
on "top"), linux 2.2 soaks up almost all the available memory
in sight, even with only a web browser running on the screen.
I know, there are a lot of processes using up Ram, but I bet
if top were to have a total for the %MEM column, I would only
be using maybe 10 % in reality.

3. While a small number of processes are managing to
fool me into saying they are using 505596K out of 508976K
available, the Swap: says that only 5980K is used out of
the 273088K available.

What is going on here? Is this the way it is supposed to work?
Is top really misleading us, and fibbing about the memory
used? I ask out of idle curiosity mostly, since I haven't had
a problem since upgrading my memory. But it is curious that
the memory seems to be claimed for applicaitons, and then
not released, perhaps awaiting a demand or something.
Can anyone explain this behavior?

Gene.

Some things you will need to compile a kernel from sources will be
libncurses5 and bin86. I don't use the debianized kernel sources ever. If
you have a network connection, you can just apt-get the libraries I mention
and then ftp to ftp.kernel.org or something and get 2.2.18. There is a
debian package for pppoe though. Perhaps no kernel compile is necessary?
Try using apt-get to satisfy your thirst :)

Not "any" but such that allow for mistakes later.
a) On pristine drive create Linux primary partition starting AND ending
on cylinder 1. It will be /boot.
b) Install Windows alotting as much as your heart desires.
c) Now create Linux extended partition, type 85, and divide it to /
(root), swap, /usr, /home, /opt - to your liking.
Note: On my box I have Windows installed in primary partition C: and
data in DOS extended (drives D: and E:).
It allows for reinstalling the OS without too much loss.
Kernel/s into /boot.
You have to do the math.

Have fun.

Yes. Look at the figures for "buff" and "cached". The system uses "spare"
memory to improve performance. The memory is there; why shouldn't it use
it? Most of it can be made available for processes when needed.

(1) You will probably have some processes (mostly daemons) that do
virtually nothing. Why not let them be swapped out to make room for
more buffering and caching?

(2) Reportedly, the memory-management system periodically goes around
and looks for pages to swap out anyway. So there is no harm to having
a little bit of swap space available so this effort is not wasted.
