Just be glad that you didn't add a partition in between and tried
to format that one. It would have succeeded and formatted th ewrong
partition.

Nope, fdisk wrote it correctly.
It wasn't re-read, so no-one else was aware of the change.

Always reboot when you do this. Even if it doesn't complain.
better be safe than sorry.

PS. it's no workaround, it explicitly *told* you to reboot.
In linux that's not often seen, but if you get such a message, do it.

Norton Ghost does this, from a DOS floppy disk, ghost to network or other
HDD, I use it all the time for this same reason also cloneing Linux installs
on identical hardware.

Not seen ghost 2000 but told it now supports bootable CD's also.

HI Lee!

> Any suggestion for good application like Microsoft Office for Linux?

So here's my experience in these things. I installed StarOffice from
Sun, Ver. 5.2. It has brilliant features for importing documents from
any MS Office-App you like, but... it's that slow, that you could make
some coffee while starting it.

As I need more faster apps, I searched the Internet for some things.

AbiWord (www.abisource.com) is quite good, but it's in a low state of
development - you don't even have the ability to insert tables!

KWord (www.kword.com) is also quite good, it has more features than
AbiWord, but it takes some time to load and both AbiWord and KWord
don't have really great import filters for M$ (that I need).

WordPerfect is also quite well and the M$-Filters are better there, but
with the download-version you don't have the ability to install other
fonts than the installed ones (and I would need that, because I
converted my old ttfs to afms and got them work under my packages
(X/Staroffice/even AbiWord).

The last one, Applix is something I haven't tested yet. I think, I'll
install some version for testing (if it exists) and try it. I _would_
pay some money (under 25$) for it, but free would be great..

So I think, you should keep searching for a good one, I believe
there'll be one in the near future.

Have a lot of fun,
Dennis

Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 11:23:52 GMT

Hi

I have several small clients of mine that are running old hardware, all P120
or worse with 64MB, 2GB disks. Currently with win95 and word 95, thay want to
extend the life of these things, and as they only ever do WP, no lan, no
internet etc. I am thinking of installing a cut down linux with Star Office
as the only app. Doing this is not the issue, I just have never seen Linux
and Star office on a machine this small.

I have done this already for severl people, all with P166 or better, the
results are better than windoze (no supprise there) on the same hardware,
several happy users saving $$$

Any thoughts on this?
Will it be fast enough for them?

>From the CD-Writing-HOWTO:

  3.1.2. Test the CD-image

Linux has the ability to mount files as if they were disk-partitions.
This feature is useful to check that the directory layout and file
access permissions of the CD-image matches your wishes. Although media
is very cheap today, the writing process is still time-consuming, and
you may at least want to save your time by doing a quick test.

To mount the file cd_image created above on the directory /cdrom, give
  the command

       mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 cd_image /cdrom

Now you can inspect the files under /cdrom - they appear exactly as
they were on a real CD. To umount the CD-image, just say umount
  /cdrom.

Hi,
Currently i am trying to setup a ftp server on my linux box, which is
running redhat 7.0.
I can login as an anonymous user, but i cannot upload and files to the /pub
directory. What do i need to change so that i can upload files? When i login
as an anonymous user i can see the following folders by default:
/bin
/etc
/lib
/pub
Can i make it so that only the /pub folder is visible to the users and not
the other folders?

When i login to ftp server as a user (not anonymous user) i can see the root
(/) directory. How can fix this so that the user can only see /home/username
and nothing else?

Thanks

Alik,

I also have a VIA AC97 chip (Ensoniq-1371, which emulates a Soundblaster PCI
128, I think) on board my PIII/667MHz/128 MB Linux system; it runs fine with
Kernel 2.2.16, 2.2.17 and 2.2.18, using both OSS and ALSA sound modules. To
get sound working, I recompiled the kernel, downloaded alsa-0.5.10 (I
think), compiled the modules and configured ALSA from my Linux Control
Center (I use easyLinux 2.2, which is based on RedHat 7, I think). After
that, I had the sound up and running. The kernel source tree
(/usr/src/linux-2.2.16 or up), as well as ALSA source tree
(/usr/src/alsa-0.5.10 or up) should be on your Linux CD's or can be
downloaded for free from every public Linux file server.
You'll have to recompile ALSA for each kernel version; since /lib/modules
has subdirectories /lib/modules/2.2.16, /lib/modules/2.2.17 and so on, the
modules can co-exist without overwriting each other. Just make the symbolic
link /usr/src/linux point to the correct linux source tree before
re-compiling ALSA
Whether AC97 on-board sound card support works for pre-2.2.16 kernels, I
don't know.

Subject: SOLUTION: Installing XFree 4.01 on a SiS630 notebook

Hello all,
some days ago I posted the following message regarding the installation
of XFree 4.01 on a SiS630 based notebook:
> I have just installed XFree 4.0.1 (as shipped with Mandrake 7.2) on a

I received numerous EMails asking how exactly this is done. Though I
believe that by reading the READMEs and manuals carefully, you
should be able to figure this out yourself, I will post a more
detailed description what I did:

0. Allocate the appropriate amount of shared video memory in the BIOS
        (8MB should definitely be enough).
1. Reinstall lilo or grub on your partition/bootsector, and tell the
kernel to boot right into graphical framebuffer mode. You
need to boot into the same resolution you want to run your
        Xserver lateron, e.g. vga=0x317 for 1024x768x16
2. Reboot the system to get into framebuffer mode.
3. Install XFree 4.01 (better remove all remainders of XF 3.x, it will
only confuse you) and use the following XF86Config-4 (which
should is placed in /etc/X11/ on my Mandrake 7.2 system):

# ***************************************************
Section "Files"
    RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"

    VertRefresh 40-70
EndSection
Section "Device"
    Identifier "SiS 630"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    BoardName "Unknown"
    Driver "sis"
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

    Device "SiS 630"
    Monitor "Generic|Generic LCD Panel 1024x768"

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16

    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"

# ****************************************

4. Run your Xserver (be sure it is the right one, especially if
you have XFree 3.x still installed, and that it
reads from the correct configuration file). If it doesn't
work, check the startup messages of the Xserver.

Using this procedure I got XFree 4.01 (as shipped with Mandrake 7.2)
to work on a Gericom Webboy with SiS630 chipset and 13.3 TFT display.
If your TFT display has a different solution, you have to change
both, the frambuffer mode and the XF86Config-4 accordingly. Ah,
maybe it is a good idea to turn off "display stretch" in the
BIOS of your notebook, if that is possible.
If the whole thing doesn't work ?
---- I don't know, it did for me :-)

Of course, I do not take any responsibility if this procedure kills
your machine or burns your house ;-) It's all your risk.

Regards
German

P.S.: I will not answer any EMails asking "How do I install
grub/lilo/XFree/..." as this is thoroughly descriped in
the appropriate documentation and HOWTO files.
