I already know that dual boot is possible.
Is triple boot possible?
Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE, and RedHat Linux 6.2.
Has anyone actually tried triple boot?
What are some issues that I need to deal with?
Thanks.

Subject: Tearing video display
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 19:29:28 GMT

Hi!

I have a NEC Ready 7020 that I am trying to install Linux onto. Everything
seems fine except the XWindows display has horizontal distortion
("tearing"). What happens is the display is stable vertically, but the sides
of the screen are a bit jagged and unstable. The screen is readable and
almost useable, but the display jitters up to an inch from each side.

This machine uses a CL5434 video chip that built into the mainboard. There
is 2Meg of ram for the video display. The computer is connected to an NEC
XV15 monitor.

I have installed RedHat 5.2, Mandrake 6.0 and Storm Linux and all have done
the same thing. I also tried XVIDTUNE and none of the settings there had any
affect. There are no issues on this PC where Windows is concerned.

I don't know much about Linux so I'm at a dead end. ANY help would be
appreciated!

I've looked at this page before; it's useful as a general overview,
and I read the compatibility list for Intel/6.2 again, but it doesn't
really answer questions such as "Is the built-in modem or sound card
on X model motherboard workable ? Can I make work with a driver from
the manufacturer ?" The best place for stuff like that is sometimes
the various ratings databases like

http://lhd.datapower.com

but they had no rating for that motherboard (too new, I suppose). I
guess I might be the first to rate it.

It's a good thing you caught this one; I was presumming that the ABIT
KT7 had a built-in ATA100, but it really has an ATA66/33.  Someone
else also emailed me about it. The reason I selected a ATA100 drive
was that the big brother of this board, the ABIT KT7-RAID, has a built
in ATA100 RAID controller. So I'll save some money and get more space
my moving to a Western Digital 45 GB ATA/66, for $199. Or I might
simply get a 20 GB for $130. With the way prices are plunging, the
best strategy is probably to buy disk space as you need it.

>> video card:   Hercules AGP 64MB Prophet-II GTS GeForce2 $399

So I'm committed to this card because someone I work with is writing
some openGL stuff that I might want to use, and he is also buying a
linux box with this card, and it seems having the same card would
avoid problems. Otherwise I'd get some very standard low end card.

It looks like what you have to for this is install XFree86 4.01 and
then also download a binary driver from nVidia.

If I can buy a 3c509c from some local storefront, I will; I know that
one always works, and is usually cheaper. Otherwise, it looks like

Subject: problem with configuring ESS Maestro soundcard?
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 19:35:06 GMT

hi everyone

got a little problem with a ESS Maestro soundcard and wondered if anyone
has come across the same card and its soln.

the card in question is actually a Videologic 5D Sonic which is a (pci)
graphix card and soundcard on the same board - the graphix card works
fine, but its the sound card (well, the sound bit :) taht i cant figure
out.

with a no-sound-modules-included-2.2-kernel, doing a `lspci -v` reports:

    ...
    00:12.1 Multimedia audio controller: Platform Technologies, Inc.:
Unknown device 0100 (rev 10)
        Subsystem: Unknown device 1285:1010
        Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
        I/O ports at e800

    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Tseng Labs Inc ET6000 (rev 70)
        Flags: slow devsel, IRQ 11
        Memory at fd000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
        I/O ports at c800
    ...

the maestro doc in the kernel src tree tells me that the sound chip is
indeed an ESS Maestro AGOGO (looking at the 0100 device id and a 1285
pci id).

so after reading the sound docs from the 2.2.17 kernel i built the
required sound modules into the kernel (CONFIG_SOUND=y and
CONFIG_SOUND_MAESTRO=y were the only options selected in the 'sound'
section of make config)

after rebooting, the kernel reports back on bootup:

    ...
    maestro: version 0.14 time 16:36:06 Sep 10 2000
    maestro: Configuring ESS Maestro found at IO 0xE800 IRQ 10
    maestro:  subvendor id: 0x10101285
    maestro: not attempting power management.
    maestro: my goodness! you seem to have a pt101 codec, which is
quite rare.
            you should tell someone about this.
    maestro: 1 channels configured.
    ...

and indeed the /dev/dsp device is available (i can do `echo "" >
/dev/dsp` and it doesnt complain about no such device). however, when i
try to use the device, by playing a cd, catting au/wavs to /dev/dsp
there is nothing coming out of the speakers (and yes, i have plugged the
speakers into the card :)

the /proc fs seems to think that its there also
    /proc/devices
        Characeter devices:
        ...
        14 sound
        ...

    /proc/ioports
        ...
        e800-e8ff
        ...

    /proc/interrupts
        ...
        10:     1       XT-PIC  ESS Maestro
        ...

i would be very grateful if someone could help me out with this one and
point out anything that is obviously wrong - i've been trying to sort
this out for a little while now without much success :(

thanks in advance

sounds like the horizontal scan rate or timing is very wrong.
This is a job for xvidtune.

basically the beam is scanned from left to right, it should try to scan just
beyond the right edge of the screen then it should get a blanking pulse and
turn off the beam, the beam is pulled back across to the beyond the left
side of the screen, then the beam is turned back on and starts its next
sweep across the screen.
turning the beam off too soon causes a black bar at the right edge of the
screen and turning the beam back on too late causes a black bar at the left
edge of the screen.
no timer is really accurate so they bars tend to be jagged.

The long and the short of it is the basic timings are way off for the
monitor you have selected.

surely you must know, how to configure LInux LOader (lilo) if you use=20
it...

eg.

/etc/lilo.conf

boot=3D/dev/hda

default=3Dlinux # or some other w2m, w98

image=3D/vmlinuz
        root=3D/dev/hda3
        label=3Dlinux
        read-only

other=3D/dev/hda1
        label=3Dw2m
        table=3D/dev/hda

other=3D/dev/hda2
        label=3Dw98
        table=3D/dev/hda

Assuming this, you have first partition for w2000, second for w98, and=20
third for linux...
but, if you use swap I think that linux go to /dev/hda4... and /dev/hda3=
=20
is for swap...
check with fdisk /dev/hda, from root linux prompt a then 'p' command.

create the /boot partition into hda into a small partition just before
hda1 (fat)
it is easy with partition magic 5.0, maybe you can use fips to split the
fat partition to give the smail linux partition just before hda1 (fat).

Redhat 6.2 and Backspace Key
DISCUSSION

Customer has upgraded to Redhat 6.2 and finds that the backspace key no
longer works in xterm. It generates a tilde. Using stty has no effect on the
key
RESOLUTION

In Xconfig>Input, clear the "Shifted" mapping for the backspace key. This
will restore the functionality to the backspace key

I have a "triple boot" on my machine. I installed Windows 98 first. Then
I installed Windows 2000 Server; this installed the NT boot loader
allowing me to select between Win98 and Win2K. Then I installed RedHat
6.0, installing the LILO boot loader on my master boot record. The
default operating system for LILO is "dos". When I start up my machine,
I get the LILO prompt. If I hit enter or do nothing, the NT boot loader
loads, allowing me to boot either Win98 or Win2K. If I type "linux" at
the LILO prompt, I go to linux.

Hi,
I just installed Linux on my computer. Slackware 7

I compiled the kernel and copied it to /vmlinuz.

I ran LILO and installed it onto the MBR.

I have a scsi system that is too wierd to describe. But, at any rate, my
setup is as follows and cannot be changed.

/dev/sda1 DOS partition, tagged bootable (6)
/dev/sda2    Linux Swap partition (82)
/dev/sdb1    Linux partition (83)
/dev/sdc1 Linux partition (83) (where the vmlinuz boot image is
located).

The kernel boots fine, but the following error screws up the final
kernel load. It reads:

INIT: Version 2.76 booting
/etc/rc.d/rc.S: Testing Filesystem status: read-only file system
Parallelizing FSCK version 1.15 (18-Jul-1999)
/sbin/e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open
/dev/sda1
(null):
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a corect ext2 file
system....

>From there the computer will only boot in some limited mode.

Obviously the kernel is checking for a Linux partition on /dev/sda, but
obviously, one does not exist because that is the dos partition and the
swap file.

How can I fix this?

Thanks in Advance,
Al Brandt

There are many web sites, including RedHat, that seems to imply that the
maximum swap space is 128 MB. They never say that it cannot be larger than
128 MB; they simply say that it can handle up 128 MB of swap space.
I have 194 MB RAM, and I'm under the impression that larger the swap space,
the better, so I chose 384 MB of swap space (2x RAM). My RedHat Linux 6.2

By the way, what's the maximum RAM supported by RedHat Linux 6.2?

Andy,
Your solution seems to contradict the "official instructions" by RedHat.
According to RedHat, you *must not* place the LILO in the MBR. Here's a
direct quote from RedHat regarding WinNT/Linux installation.
"install LILO on the first sector of the root partition, not the MBR"
Since you have a working setup, it must work. Have you considered creating
a web page and contributing to the Linux Documentation Project?
