Right. Simpler than what I suggested and the first thing to try!
If it fails, then try altering the modem init string. (The place
I'm in requires it.)

Subject: A warning Paradise IDE/66 PCI
Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 22:34:59 -0500
I have a dual pentium III system, kernel 2.4.1.
I had a lock up when I attached a CDROM and a CDR to one channel, and a hard
disk to another. I used a standard IDE cable for the CDS and a IDE/66 cable for
the hard disk.
Under heavy load on the hard disk, and burning a CD, the system hung. The mouse
moved a little, but then stopped. I was also playing with reiserfs at the time.
This happened only once.
I was able to reproduce a situation:
cat /dev/cdrom0 | com image.iso
Where I was able to get corrupt data on the CD while I was working on the disk.
The disk information, however, seemed never to be corrupt. It should be noted
that I am using SCSI emulation on the CDROMs
I believe that one or more of a few issues may be the problem:
The promise card may not play well with CDROM or CDR drives.
The promise card may require the added noise immunity of the IDE/66 cable.
There may be a bug in an interaction between a promise card and the SCSI layer,
and maybe reiserfs.
In my system, IDE 0 had 2 drives, IDE 1 had one drive, IDE 2 (Promise card) had
the two CD drives, and IDE 3 (also promise card) had a hard disk.
I moved the CD drives to IDE 1 (on the mother board), and the disk which was on
IDE 1 to IDE 2.
After this, I was no longer able to reproduce the data corruption, or the hang.

Subject: LiLo Question - How Boot > 1024 Cyl?
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 03:54:48 GMT
Folks,
I just installed RedHat 6.2 on a P3- 450 that I have. It had only
just a 20GB HD(IDE) as master, with a primary C:\ and an extended and
logical D:\ with Windows98.
I recently bought and installed an additional 40GB drive(IDE),
configured as slave. I put on it a an extended DOS partition, making
the whole drive E:\.
I then used PartitionMagic, and freed up some space at the end of the
drive. I made a 8GB partition for the RedHat 6.2 and swap.
I'm using Bootmagic 6.0 to switch between Windows98 (my wife uses this
computer as well, and want to make it very easy for her to get into
both, mainly Win98). I had RedHat install LiLo to the Linux
partition, not the MBR. (I've used this configuration on a P166, i.e.
using BootMagic 4.0, but now that I think about it, I used a whole
hard drive (6GB) for Linux, not a part of it like I am talking about
now, and therefore I was under 1024).
RedHat seemed to install OK, but I can boot only from the diskette
(when I use BootMagic, I get as far as the 1st two letters LI in
LILO).
Now after reading this newsgroup, I see that I need to have my /boot
on a partition below the 1024th cylinder of this drive. Or do I???
I saw on one post that with kernels > 2.2 (RedHat 6.2 has 2.2.14),
that LiLo supports booting past the 1024th cylinder by using a
parameter LBA32, substituting default for lba32.
I took this to mean the line that says
default = linux
changed to
lba32 = linux
Is this correct? If not, what is?
(I looked on the man pages for Lilo, but they are dated 1995.) I also
took a quick glance at the Lilo mini-howto, but did not see anything
about lba32, or booting past 1024th cylinder. Matter of fact, it said
something to the effect that the kernel had to be under 1024.
However, I could not get this to work (upon running lilo, it
complained of a syntax error).
If lilo doesn't support booting above 1024th cylinder, will this work?
Make a /boot partition of about 100MB (is this big enough for a huge
kernel??? Or way too big??? What is the average size of a HUGE
kernel???) below the 1024th cylinder (probably at the start of the
HD). Then, have my E:\ drive, then a partition for the rest (/, /usr,
/home, etc.), and finally a swap partition.
If I wanted to install multiple distributions of Linux. could I simply
leave about 500MB free (5 100MB partitions, assuming that is what size
I need for a kernel) at the first of the drive (assuming I was going
to put 5 distributions on the HD, with 100MB for the kernel each), and
then leave room for each distribution at the end of the drive? I
would have to shrink my E:\ drive for that as I added a new Linux, but
I bought this drive primarily for backups and Linux.
Is this reasonable? Is there a better way?
Thanks in advance for the input.

Try getting the latest lilo. It should be able to boot beyond the 1024
cylinder.

I'm running RH 7.0 dual boot with Win' 98 on a Pentium MMX 166Mhz,
with a soundblaster 16. Sound had been working pretty much ok, until
today when I noticed that I don't get any sound at all from the
speakers. The hardware is just fine, since when I go into Win' 98,
sound is ok -- I can play mp3 files, and they sound as expected.
Somehow, I suspect that some setting somewhere has changed, but I
really don't know where to look. Any suggestions?

You may have a program called "anacron" already installed
on your machine. It will allow you to run the programs
in serial so they won't overlap. There are also some
programs at www.freshmeat.net that allow execution only
when the system is below a specified load level.

Did an fdisk and format on the drive to make everything go away. Lo and

Hi,

scsi-CDRW to the machine. First installation, the system detected the scsi
module is initio.o but conflict resources reported. I have changed the
module to a100u2w.o from "modules.conf" (harddrake is still held the module
initio) but it can't load in autoboot.
I'm sure that the module can be see by modprobe, the state after lsmod as
follow:
By modprobe a100u2w.o
a100u2w unused
after probe this module I can see the directory /proc/scsi/INIA100
By cdrecord -scanbus

Subject: help with configuring ssh server to support both ssh1 and ssh2
Date: 11 Feb 2001 07:01:09 GMT
Hi everyone,
I am currently running Secure Shell (SSH) version 2.0.13 server
on RedHat Linux version 6.1 with kernel 2.2.18. At the moment,
I have to support ssh clients running on Microsoft Windows using
SecureCRT 3.2 and F-Secure SSH version 1.0. SecureCRT 3.12
supports ssh version 2.0.13 so I am OK there. However,
F-secure SSH for windows only supports SSH version 1. I've
configured the SSH server on the linux box to support both
version 1 and 2 of ssh (ie. by modifying the configuration file
sshd2_config to support Ssh1Compatibility); I could NOT logon
to the linux box using F-Secure SSH. I have the same
problem with SecureCRT if I choose SSH1 connection. This the
message I got back from the SSH server:
Unsupported protocol version received from remote SSH server
(SSH-2.0-2.0.13). Please not that SSH2 servers can be configured
to accept SSH1 connections.
Can anyone show me how to to make my SSH2 server to accept SSH1
connection? Many thanks.......

Subject: LILO / Windows 2000 - Help
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 18:36:38 +1100
If someone could shed some light on this problem it will be very much
appreciated
What I had:
I had Windows 2000 installed on my primary drive 'c:'
I had another 20gig drive on the secondary IDE channel with a 4gig NTFS
partition (E:) and a 500MB FAT32 partition for transferring between linux
and windows.
What I did:
Installed linux intending not to install lilo, but create a bootdisk Instead
Red Hat went and installed lilo on the MBR of my C:. It did not ask me
anything about lilo installation as I was expecting it to, all I opted for
was to create a boot disk.
What happened:
I could not boot Windows through lilo. The initial boot options for lilo
were linux and 'dos'. Dos was set up to boot from the NTFS partition on the
second drive for some reason. In linuxconf I removed the dos OS option and
made a new one for windows to boot from c: (hda1). The /etc/lilo.conf file
is consistent witht the changes. However the boot prompt still has only
linux and dos, and not the Windows 2000 boot option I made. So I cannnot
boot windows from lilo, only linux. After alot of mucking around I created a
boot disk for windows, so currently I can boot either OS from floppys but
not from lilo.
Why doesnt the Windows 2000 (hda1) boot option show in lilo, only the 'dos'
option that I have since removed?
I know you can use the recovery console in win2k to fix the master boot
record, as I've done it before. But I cannot get to the recovery console
because 1, for some stupid reason the win2k cdrom suddenly decides it is non
bootable, and 2. I have installed the recovery console as a boot option in
the boot.ini file on the windows boot disk but when I try to run it there is
an error saying that 'ntoskrnl.exe' is missing or corrupted.
Has anyone had a similiar problem or any ideas? I hate having to boot win2k
from a floppy as I use it the most.
How do you completely remove lilo and revert back to the previous mbr?

No true.
It's a limitation of the BIOS.
The newer versions of LILO (v21.4.3 and above) use the extensions that
BIOS'es nowadays have to overcome this limitation.

There's hardly ever a reason to reboot in linux. Configuring X is not one of
those reasons.
To the OP.
What have you tried?
What do you mean with huge? Are you running a low resolution?
Are the characters huge? Is the workspace bigger then your monitor?
Just calling everyhing huge and ask us to help isn't going to work.

xinit &

xhost +pinkrose.local.net (the big fileserver)
rlogin pinkrose
at the pinkrose# prompt type
export DISPLAY=mary.local.net:0

works great! but.. How can I automate this process? Possibly using a

have any documentation on the xdm program or how to set it up to allow
Xwindows servers on thin clients to use the progrqams on the

Being I use Slackware Linux ver 3.9 Is there good books that
