the service may be enabled in inetd.conf but does it exist on the
computer? When i first started working with ftp with suse 6.2 wu.ftpd
was selected to be used in inetd.conf only it wasn't on the computer. I
switched it to in.ftpd and try another connection with ftp and it worked
fine. What helped me was i read the errors in /var/log/messages.

i'd suggest you do the same.

yes, try /var/log/messages

Marvin,

Thanks for your help, but it didn't quite work out. I tried, as you
said, to make a boot disk, but I couldn't get it to boot off of that
either, I got the same error. That is, it would boot, and would start
reading off the floppy, but then it would get to the same kernel panic
and bomb out on me. I would go to the RedHat site and download the new
kernel, but I can't get into Linux to install it, so there seems to be
no point until I can get in somehow.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

-Andrew

Clark,

As you suggested, the boot disk didn't work out easily. I also tried
what you mentioned, trying to tell LILO? the kernel? where the rest of
the OS was, but that didn't work. Do you know who posted that info to
you? Maybe they could give me some more info. Have you gotten a
chance to try a re-install?

Thanks again,

You don't "mount" a tape drive.
Use tar, cpio, dd, etc to write to it. There are some backup programs
available which probably write and read it for you, but I can't remember
the names of any of them off the top of my head. I'm sure there have
been posts about backups on the newsgroups. A search on deja.com should
give you some pointers.

Starting SuSE version 6.3 you don't need a special "bootdisk". Use the
install disk to get SuSE Linux running.

While the problem sometimes lies with the ISP being attuned mostly to MS,
sometimes it lies with your own computer. Mine had an IRQ conflict. I had
no idea where to find the problem but Bill U. and another helpful person
here
sorted it out for me. I would much prefer going on line and getting help
from a few knowledgeable people than going through MS tech support. This
way I gain some background information so I can solve my own problems
and build my system exactly the way I want it over time.

Once I got the IRQ straightened out, I found wvdial and have used that
ever since. It's extremely easy to configure and according to the man page
it works with about 95% of the ISPs out there. Did you try it yet? It's on
every cdrom I've got here - I'm not sure why it's omitted from the default
installs. Just rpm it onto your hd and away you go.

Another good idea to do is to check to see if the package is installed
by typing "rpm -qa". This will list all packages. You should have one
for ftp or wu-ftp.

In your HOME there is a file called .bash_profile. Add this line to
it:

export PATH=$PATH/opt/bin

(or wherever your bin directory is under /opt)

You need a different kernel. Try installing the
kernel-2.2.16-xx.i386.rpm package (and use i386, not i686). RedHat
made a boo-boo in their i686 kernel package.

You will need to edit /etc/lilo.conf after you install the new kernel,
and you will need to re-run lilo. It is a pain, and a bug -- but it
is already fixed in rawhide, and will be fixed in RedHat 7.0.

From: Bill Pringlemeir <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have compiled the mpg123 source and the Alsa emu10k1 driver for a SB
live card. The alsa utils and the mpg123 work; I can play MP3 files.

I like the XMMS program look because I am use to using WinAmp
software. It was playing mp3 songs at one point, but now it always
reports that the device is taken. I re-configured my CD/RW to use
scsi emulation instead of ATAPI. I think the reboot cause the XMMS to
stop working for some reason. I have a Mandrake install

[bpringle@localhost bpringle]$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.2.13-4mdk ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version \
 2.95.1 19990816 (release)) #1 Tue Sep 7 18:23:11 CEST 1999

The ALSA drivers appear to be the latest. 0.5.9c (downloaded recently).

[bpringle@localhost bpringle]$ xmms --version
xmms 0.9.1

I couldn't find documentation on XMMS supporting Alsa, but it does
use the OSS and my mixers and other programs seem to work with the
alsa driver. Will a newer versions of the XMMS (1.2.x) fix this or
should I go about it another way.

Thanks,
Bill

Subject: Via82cxxx sound chip (codec) on motherboard
From: Bill Pringlemeir <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 06:37:58 GMT

[this is a completely different computer than my other post]

I have a computer with a Via82cxxx chip on the mother board. I am
using Red Hat 6.2. The bios has facilities to enable/disable the
`on-board SB'. It also has fields to set the ioports, IRQ, and DMA
channel.

When the SB is enabled in the bios, the pnpdump program causes a
segmentation fault. Is it worth submitting a bug report? The info
page says BUGS, nah. The Sound-HOWTO discusses using pnpdump.
Disabling the SB in the BIOS allows the pnpdump program to run. I
then created a isapnp.conf file and the startup seemed to accept this.
However, running modprobe via82cxxx always fails. Is there some way
to tell it to use specific io, IRQ and DMA? They are 220h, IRQ5, and
DMA1. /proc/ioports, dma, and interrupt show no conflicts; but the
via82cxxx sound chip is not listed in the proc files.

thanks,
Bill

ps, I looked a the via82cxxx source but it didn't seem to have
documentation on how to pass parameters. It appears to attempt to use
IRQ7 when it runs by itself. I did get PPPoE, and a CD/RW working all
by myself...

And I'm doing that too, but that isn't the issue I warned for in my
first post.
IIRC there are BIOS'es that can only boot an OS that is on a HDD on
IDE0, so hda and hdb is not a problem, the problems arise when you try
hdc or hdd to boot from. I'm not sure why bios'es cannot boot from these
drives, but I would suspect an addressing issue , thus giving a very
similar problem as the 1024 cyl. issue. Maybe all that you cannot do is
make a partition active on those drives, thus disabling the ability for
other OS's (like win98) to boot from such a drive (ie. because win98
does not have a separate bootloader).
But I may well be totally wrong about this, so please correct me if so.

(I will still give people the advise not to boot from hdc/hdd if I
cannot have physical access to their PC's and check for myself that it's
not a problem for their situation, until I know for sure that it's never
a problem)

Hi Chris,

The idea about compiling the scsi controller into the kernel is a
sound one, but this does not solve the issue about how to boot an
initially installed system, because the installation process does not
offer control over how the kernel is built.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas, in the meantime, reboot and reinstall...

Well, I don't know how this is managed in mandrake. In my RedHat,
under /etc/rc.d/init.d there is a standard script called functions
that contains the standard definition of PATH.

If you add your path to the .bash_profile into your home directory
(~/.bash_profile) the path is not updated ? this sound strange to me.
