Way to big.(Actually depends on the rest of the partitions)
Just free 1 cylinder (approx. 16M) at the start of that disc.

They tend to fit on a floppy (1.44M)
And you will not build a HUGE kernel. Why would you?

I suspect that the system is trying to bring up xdm/kdm/gdm and failing.
At the lilo propmpt do
linux 1
and when it boots to singel user mode, edit /etc/inittab and change the

Then reboot.

Seems to me it is asking for you log on to your PC.
In the setup you were asked for a password for root and to make a user
account, with password.

Actually it DID find the EICAR test file, which is what it says, a test file

Assuming named is started, this behaviour could be seen, if you do not have
a reverse mapping for 127.0.0.1 in your DNS.
Add the following lines to /etc/named.conf:
---- Begin: Cut here ----
zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" {
type master;
file "localhost.rev";
};
---- End: Cut here ----
Add the file /var/named/localhost.rev (assuming your zone-files are in
/var/named), containing:
---- Begin: Cut here ----
; /var/named/localhost.rev
;
; @ means the actual zone, i.e. 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa
@ IN SOA localhost admin.localhost. (
199706110 ; Serial
3600 ; Refresh
300 ; Retry
3600000 ; Expire
3600) ; Minimum
;
;
; Name servers for this domain
;
IN NS localhost.
;
;
; Reverse mapping in this domain
;
1 IN PTR localhost.
---- End: Cut here ----

Subject: Turbolinux graphical login kills my keyboard (linux newbie)
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 09:21:01 -0000
Dear All
I spent yesterday installing Turbolinux 6 from a magazine CD and all went
well until I ran turboxcfg to configure X-Windows.
The first time I did it I foolishly selected "Graphical Login" and let the
system reboot. The system ran through its boot sequence, to the graphical
login, at which point my mouse wouldn't work and my keyboard stopped working
completely (all LEDs off). The reset button was the only way to restart it.
I looked in the manuals, and thought it would be quicker to re-install,
which I did. I then ran turboxcfg again and specified "Text Login", on the
grounds that it didn't matter if the keyboard and mouse weren't configured
properly, I could always run turboxcfg again/fiddle with the set-up files
etc. How wrong I was - it rebooted and went to the graphical login anyway,
with the same lock-up and everything.
Is there any way I can stop the boot sequence part way through (I've tried
Ctrl-Alt-F1 without success) so that I can at least have a go at getting
back to text login, or does anyone have any other ideas apart from
re-installing?
I'm installing onto a c1994 AT motherboard P120, if that makes any
difference.
Thanks in advance.

Neither! Use Custom and install only what is *absolutely* necessary. Both
Server and Workstation installs a number of potentially dangerous
services/daemons (at least when you run a firewall).

You come from the Windows-world, I presume (as you're asking about
extensions :-). It's OK, you do not need an extension to rc.firewall.
If you're in doubt, copy the file from your browser's screen and save the
copied data in a file. If you save with your browser as an HTML-file, you'll
need to remove the tags (if any) manually.

Yes, this works, but you'll need input rules to protect the firewall itself,
of course.

Hi all,
I am wondering what the procedure would be to copy and restore an ext2 boot
partition with a block size of 1kB to a block size of 4kB.
I imagine I could dump the partition in single-user mode and then restore it
onto a newly formatted ext2 partition with a different cluster size. My
concern is that (1) I will be able to do the restore booting from a Redhat 7
CD and (2) whether the restore command will cope with the different block
size.
Any advice appreciated.

Look for the "HOSTNAME=..." line in the file "/etc/sysconfig/network".
If you have problems like this in the future, where you know the contents of
a file (i.e. "localhost.localdomain" in your example), try using find and
grep together like this "find / -type f|xargs grep
'localhost.localdomain'|less". It will go through all regular files (-type
f) in your system, provide the filenames to grep (using xargs). grep will
look for the expected content. I use less, if I expect more than a screenful
of files.

As you suggest, this is done most easily when the UIDs are the same on the
two systems. You should probably make a tar-ball of the files (i.e. create a
tar-file containing all the files you want to move on the old system and
move this to the new system and extract it here). There may be other (and
easier) ways of doing it.
If you do not have room for the data and the tar-file on either of the
systems, you might want to do it the hard way, by logging in as root on the
new system, create the users on the system with their home-directories, su
to each user and copy her/his files with ftp or scp.
You might consider temporarily to move the disks from the old system to the
new system, mount them here and copy the data instead. This is the easiest
way (I know of) to copy data between systems.
Normally you can copy the users' passwords if you copy their data from
/etc/passwd and (if shadow passwords are used) /etc/shadow.
You may consider copying any changed files from /etc/pam.d to the new
system, but beware of incompatibilities between different
distributions/releases.
