Hello,

I never heard of chkconfig?

Anyway...:-)

man init.d

describes what to do.

You have basically just to create some symlinks (ln -s) from the run
leveldirs back to your script.

ls -al /etc/rc.d/init.d/rc*.d/ |less

will show you what I mean.

Good luck

Is is possible to setup two Dlink USB radio's at the same time, tuning
into different stations? I've got two sound cards that I'll feed the
signals into.

And while we're on the topic, can I buy a USB adapter for additional
usb ports and hook a 3rd radio up?

Just after I went skiing I realized that the statement "I believe you can use any
/dev/ttySx which is not already in use." is incomplete. There is a connetcion
between setserial and isapnp. My isapnp script tells the modem to use 02f8 and
IRQ 3. These are what /dev/ttyS1 are set to by default (at least in my set up).
Thus I can use "setserial /dev/ttyS1 autoconfig" to get the correct UART setting
and everything is in sync. The IO address and the IRQ set with isapnp have to
correspond the same settings in the tty device. You can use setserial to set the
IRQ and address of a tty dev if you need to. See the man pages for setserial. The
point is that by using isapnp and setserial you get the device and the software to
agree on how to communicate.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi everyone,

I need a little help configuring my soundcard. I have Mandrake 7.2 and
an Aureal Vortex 2 soundcard. During the installation I was told to get
the drivers at linux.aureal.com, a site that I have found no longer
exists. The redhat sound configuration tool that comes with Mandrake
did not work. Before Mandrake, I tried out Corel 1, and it configured
my soundcard if I ran OSS.

1. Is there a site other than an aureal.com site where I could download
sound drivers?
2. If not, is there a way I could install OSS from my Corel installation
CD in order to configure my card?
3. If neither of the above will work, do any of you have any other
ideas as to how I could get my sound up and running?

Thank you all very much for you help.

Sincerely,

Kyle Smith

John, maybe this is a stupid question but anyway:
how do you tell linux to use its own driver:
1) do you have to put anything in /etc/modules ?
2) should you not define alias eth0 3c59x
3) should you define ether=10,0x310,eth0 in your lilo.conf ?

or... just remove all ether settings from the 3 above and boot like
that (but that does not eth0, i get "unknown device" error when I try
to ifconfig eth0... up

pls help out :-)

The s3trio3d is a piece of garbage and is BARELY supported by X. Do NOT let
Xconfigurator select the chip. When it comes to graphics adapter, press "U" twice to
get to unlisted so you can select SVGA support. Then, go for 800*600*8 and it will
work.
Oh, it may crap out when Xconfigurator tries to test it, but do it a 2nd time and it
will work. However, check out the Frame Buffer how to and you may have better luck.
Try at boot time,
LILO: linux vga=773 # (that is 1028*700*8) and you get a penguin. or try
LILO: linux vga=791 # (that is 1028*700*16)
Then add on the Framebuffer Xserver and fbset rpm and play.

I'm trying to install Linux (Red Hat 7.0; tried other too) on my computer
without much success. I boot from floppy, enter "text expert" at the boot
prompt, then there is a screen full of text (hardware checks I guess) and
then the screen freezes. The last line of text says something about IDE
channels.

My harddrive is partitioned to FAT 16 (Win2k installed), NTFS (data) and an
unformated partition (for Linux). I have a Promise Fastrak 66 RAID card
mirroring 2 harddrives. I have tried installing Corel distribution but it
was unsuccessful as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why ? If all the risky packets are excluded, what can the risk be ?

> And sure, blocking some packets can help
>(or hinder). Are you going to?

I was hoping to set up a single Linux machine as a NAT router and
firewall, but I was hoping to use the same machine as a mail gateway to
windows mail clients, and to run intranet and Internet web servers on
it, binding them to different interfaces. I'd probably use it as a
print spooler too.

I know many sites use a different security model based on an Internet
facing NAT router which talks to a semi-secure LAN which has another
packet filtering firewall / gateway into a secure LAN.

I don't know which way to jump. I have enough kit to implement the two
gateway scheme, but unless it's significantly more secure I'd rather not
because of the volume and power consumption of the extra kit.

>> Alternatively, bust these dangerous services be bound to the Internet

Sorry. I seem to have suffered a total syntax failure in my last post.
What I was trying to say is,

In a single router / firewall system, how easy to reduce risks by
binding potentially risky services to the in house LAN only ?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that however insecure a service may
be, if it's not bound to the Internet interface, can it possibly
  prevent a threat ?

I guess that begs the next questions:

   a) how easy is it know what services are running on a box

  and

   b) how easy it to configure what interfaces a service binds to ?

> Are you perhaps trying to distinguish
>between the localhost interface and some other interface? ("internet"

Sorry - I'm not even sure what the localhost interface is really there
for ! ( Newbie ! )

OK, so where can you find out ?

with ME, DOS, NT4 Server, Linux. I partitioned using SC2000. What I did
to install Redhat was go into SC2000 and select New Operating system,
partitioned it, and rebooted. From that point, I inserted the Redhat
startup disk, and installed Linux. I directed Redhat to the swap file and
linux partition SC2000 made. Then, if I remember correctly, I put Lilo on
the MBR (I'm sorry I can't be more clear). Installed fine and rebooted.
>From that point I get Lilo popping up ahead of SC2000. Type in DOS, and
you should come to the drive where you installed SC2000. Find the
Checkmbr.exe file and execute it. It should realign the MBR so that Lilo
appears after you select it in SC2000.

I hope this answers your question.

Has anyone had success getting one of these
buggers working?

The card worked fine in Win98 (when this box
was once a dual-boot).

I need to install an ISA SB AWE32 card.
Only one ISA slot in this PackardHell box.

Thanx in advance.

I'll tell you the thing that's worrying me but it may also be a
moot point: I want to put '/usr' on '/hda11' and make sure I
don't run into any path or symlink problems. I could copy/move
the stuff from '/usr' and then mount it in 'fstab' as '/usr'.

That seems ok but I'm also considering putting some _other_
directories on '/hda11'. I'm not sure how to do both of these
things together on '/hda11'.

Might be moot in _practice_ because I may just put '/usr' on
'/hda11', mount and not add other directories but in _principle_,
I'd like to know the best strategy.

Subject: Partitioning (Win95/Debian)
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 23:48:05 GMT

I've decided I want to dual boot Win95 and Debian GNU/Linux. So I used
Partition Magic (4.0 for DOS) to shrink my Windows partition (from ~6.5
GB to ~3.5 GB), and create Linux Swap and Linux ext2fs partitions. But
when I boot (using the boot.bat on the install CD, in DOS mode), it
tells me no swap partition is there, and the linux fdisk-style program
indicates only 1 partition, taking up 6.5 GB. DOS FDISK does recognize
the 3 partitions, though the 2 linux ones are just called type
"Non-DOS".

I've also tried deleting those partitions, just leaving the FAT32 one
for Win95 (~3.5 GB), and the rest as free space. Again, linux fdisk
says I have one partition taking up 6.5 GB. So it won't let me create
partitions from there.

Not that this is the greatest indicator, but Windows also agrees that I
have a 3.5 GB HD.

I'm completely stumped now -- I haven't heard of this problem in HOWTOs
or other documentation I've read, trying to prepare for GNU/Linux. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

If I can't do anything else, I might try booting off floppies, using
linux fdisk to delete win partition and create 2 for linux, reinstalling
windows, then installing GNU/Linux, but I really don't want to format
again. I always forget something when backing up.

Thanks in advance,

Rahul Chandra

Hi, I read through the how to use RS232 to set up the terminal.
But when I use the null modem cable to connect two RS232 serial port in
two linux boxes,
I use minicom and try to login in one machine, but only saw a couple
strange characters, no login
sign.
Done anyone know the reason? Or Someone has a procesure for doing
that?

Thanks,

I had a link (disk drive died) that showed me how to install Redhat7 or
mandrake7.2 with the hard drive connected to the onboard ata100 controller.
Could some one please post that link again or tell me how to do it.
Thanks
