Sound advice, I'm looking for a reasonably priced 486 or low end pentium
to set up as a firewall/router.
The essentials are:
2 Networking cards
IP-Masquerading, IP-Forwarding and IP-chains support in the kernel
Look on the LDP homepage for the firewall Howto, it has the minimum spec
for a firewall and a lot of info on how to configure IP-chains as a
firewall. IPchains isn't very easy to get the hang of but you could
always make use of one of the floppy based router/firewall distributions
available - it should be fairly simple with one of them! Look under
software and routers on http://www.cable-modems.co.uk/ for several!
The setup would be CM -> router -> hub -> Other machines
You can either run a DHCP server on the router or more simply use
private IP addresses on your LAN - with the latter arrangement there
should be no chance of the router mistaking local and internet packets!
Good Luck,
JIM

Hello --
I recently downloaded KDE 2.0.1 and compiled it from source. Whenever it=

starts up, none of the desktop icons appear, and none of the local files=20
appear in my home directory in Konqueror.
The same software compiles on my laptop computer perfectly well, with=20
desktop icons and Konqueror behaving properly (i.e. actually showing)
My system is a RedHat 6.1 install with the following upgraded software.

I cannot get into my system. When I try to login at the console, I type my
user name and press enter and the cursor moves to the next line but nothing
happens. When I try to connect via telnet I get the system id, but no
prompt for user name. When I type my user name and press enter, the cursor
moves to the next line but nothing happens.
Has this happened to anybody out there? Essentially, I am locked out of my
system. Is there another way in by doing interactive startup or something
like that? What should I try next to resolve this problem? Thanks in
advance for any help. Could you copy response to my e-mail address?

Hi everyone,
I just installed a RedHat Linux 7 with kernel 2.2.16-22 on a HP omnibook
6000 laptop. This machine is a NIS client in our network and I installed
amd on it. Now I got several problems for it.
1) I keep getting the following error messages for NFS mount directories
in the /var/log/messages file:
nfs_statfs: statfs error = 5
nfs_stat_to_errno: bad nfs status return value: 116
2) amd is not working.
3) All the NIS users cann't login with no error message. (I think maybe
it is because the home directory is on NFS server and amd doesn't work.)
How to set up system so that user can login even if the home directory
cann't be mounted correctly? I know telnet can allow it. But how about
Gnome and KDE login?
3) reboot of the Linux cann't come up all the way. Actually it looks
like it got halted.
Thank you very much!
Xiaoqin

That is very strange. At what point does initialization fail, as you put it ?
Do you
actually see 'DPT RAIDx' ( where x is the raid number ) on the DPT
banner ( in place of the brand name and model number of the
your SCSI drives ) when you boot the machine ? How did you build the array ?

I have a Mandrake 7.2 workstation (experimental at this stage: one
more challenge to meet!)
It's on a network with 2 NT workstations and a Red Hat server, which
is the main print server, running SAMBA (and successfully, for the NT
boxes).
However, whilst I can run Kups and configure the network printer
(using SAMBA or direct) and even print test pages, I can't see it from
within applications. StarOffice cn see it's there, but cn't seem to
print to it - when i try, I get a message in the printer status that
says "ERRDOS - ERRfilexists opening remote file (stdin)"
Can anyone shed a light on this? Have I made a rash assumption that,
like other GUIs, once you configure a printer, the applications should
be able to see it?

You can download and install at the same time! Download the net bootdisk and
when it prompts for installation method choose ftp and point it to sunsite
or freesoftware.com. I use this method all the time why waste cds and or
disk space downloading iso's when you can just do it from the net. Im
assuming you have broadband connectivity if you are downloading iso images

Since RedHat 7.0 doesn't come with Kernel 2.4.1, the first question is
where did he obtain the Kernel that wouldn't compile?
If you down load the tarball from kernel.org then you need to install the
RedHat RPM: KGCC.
And edit the file: "/usr/src/linux/Makefile"
Replace both instances of "gcc" with "kgcc".
Then the Kernel should compile.

He could just download the iso image and mount it like a regular cd.

It's already in the format that man will display for you.
Just put the file in a directory that your manpath knows,
or type "man -M . file_name".

I had a 6GB drive with Linux installed _after_ 4GB and the /boot was still

Can't say about upgrading from your current version to glibc 2.1, but
I hosed my system pretty well trying to upgrade a Red Hat 6.2 install
to glibc 2.2, so I'd be careful.
Since your distro is pretty old (as these things are measured), I'd
advise you to go ahead and upgrade the whole thing. I had pretty good
luck with Red Hat 6.2, so you might try that... it's got glibc 2.1,
so your jdk should install.
You can get RH6.2 for $5 at www.cheapbytes.com.
