I love answering my own questions. :-)

Anyway, I switched from sane-1.0.1 to sane 1.0.3 and applied an Epson backend
patch I found. That seems to have fixed things.

I'm a Linux newbie having trouble setting up Linux for the residence hall
network. I live in Illinois Street Residence Hall (ISR), and here they
use DHCP. So I logged in as root, and I did the following.
# pump -i eth0
But it said "Operation failed" and nothing else happened after that.

I'm using a Red Hat compatible Linux (Allix Linux 6.2 Beta). My ethernet
card is EtherPower2 10/100.

Please help...
Thanks a lot.

My USB port is recognized by linux. It is in the hardware list. I
understand the driver is also necessary, thanks. How do I know which
hardware device is my USB port?

I have two disc drives, both with FAT32 and Linux partitions. I
installed WINDOWS 2000 first. Then using Mandrake 7.1 I loaded the mount
points onto the two drives. Later in the installation I chose the boot
options.
So now when the machine boots up I can choose from Windows or Linux. if
I choose Windows it then goes into the Windows 2000 system chooser of 98
or 2000. As I haven't got 98 its just 2000.
Very simple......for a change!!!!!

You're going to have to talk to your (campus admin/ISP help desk) to get
values for alot of this stuff... As for how to navigate netcfg, i did
it last night in RHL 5.1, so your mileage may vary.

> config mode options -> enabled manual Dhcp Bootp

enabled should be off (try booting "linux single" at your lilo prompt)
until you get it working, otherwise your admins might disable your
network socket at the router (they do here). as for the "manual" this
should almost always be on either DHCP or BootP (which is on a different
tab of the thing provided you have the GTK, graphical interface),
depending on your network, also covered in their documentation. they
should tell you. if they don't, ask.
DHCP and BootP shouldn't have anything in them, as you're either going
to broadcast out, get the router and he's going to send the packet back
to you by your ethernet card's address... or you're not going to use it
at all since you have static IP. check with them.

> Primary name and domain
>
> IP address (I know this :))

ask them explicitly for this, and: subnet masks and default gateway.

> Net device
>
> Kernel module

net device is probably "eth0", or "/dev/eth0", though if you have
another ethernet entry (i don't know why) it may need to be ethN. the
instructions for getting the kernel module to get loaded as a module
(and not compiled into the kernel), i.e. "aliasing the card or, loading
the driver as a kernel module" are covered in the ethernet HOWTO that
resides on your box (look for it).

the stuff below has to do with your card, and you'll have to check your
documentation to see how to extract this info... but only if you have
some sort of conflict, usually kernels that ship with RHL 5.1 and later
can autodetect this stuff.

there's usually an option to "check for errors before / while
formatting". set it to whatever it's not set at, first. if that
doesn't work, it could be one of a lot of things which i'm not an expert
on... this happened to me, and that was the fix.

Kurt,

You haven't said which version of DOS you boot from on the floppy. Is
it the pseudo-DOS which underlies the 'doz?

It appears that something is different from the DOS on the floppy, and
the DOS? underpinning the 'doz. It sounds like when you boot from hard
drive, perhaps the machine is booting in NOT mode 3 which is VGA, but
some other video mode. There are several text modes which can be used,
and perhaps the DOS invoked from hard drive is setup up to use some
other (not mode 3) video mode on startup.

Also, you need to be aware that you hard drive will NEVER revert to it's
original state after the first time you've used fdisk. You can use a
utility to *empty out* or clean the partition sector (a hidden sector)
on the hard drive. That's the ONLY way to make the drive cherry
again. You mention that after the first install you fdisked the drive
and started over. Unless you used a utility to clear out that hidden
sector, you didn't REALLY start all the way over again.

Here's a link to a tiny utility which WILL allow you to clear out the
partition sector of your drive. I vehemently urge you to read the
warning regarding leaving multiple drives connected to your HD
controller when using this utility. It's here:

DEBUG Script to Clear Partition Sector of Hard Drive
http://www.firmware.com/support/bios/hdclear.htm

Also, be aware that using the loadlin util from a batch file in dos can
leave you in the "middle of a commmand shell" so to speak. What I mean
is that the batch file will take you from the middle of the file into
linux, without ending the batch file in DOS. Here's a symptom you can
encounter.
You create your linux.bat for DOS/Windows. You create an icon on
windesktop to click on to go into linux. When you click the icon, it
runs the batch file, closes windows, starts the ms-dos and runs the
batch file. Well, you're in the middle of a batch file when launching
into linux, and if you attempt to issue a reboot command in linux, it
can't/won't reboot into linux. Instead it boots back into DOS/windows,
because you weren't really in REAL dos when you exited windows. You
were actually in a command shell of windows.

Here's how you can test this out. Load REAL dos onto the hard drive,
and you'll see that it will all work correctly. Then, boot the machine
from the hard drive in DOS/windows kind of boot, but use the F8 key to
instruct the computer to boot directly to a command prompt AND NOT ENTER
WINDOWS! Now run the linux.bat file, and you'll see that it now works
correctly, and if you issue a reboot command in linux, you'll get a
reboot into linux!

One remedy is to make sure that the batch file in windows which is
launched with the mouse click, make sure that properties of that windows
icon FORCE the shutdown of windows before launching the batch file, not
merely a command line. This is like trying to run the linux.bat file
NOT from dos, but from a command prompt window in DOS. Won't work!!

My suggestion is to dump the blows, reinstall everything again forgettng
about the windoz. Run a dedicated cheapo box to put the flaky
recreational wanabee OS on it for when you need to run your cheesy
programs. Don't contaminate a beautiful machine with the blows.

Hope it all helps you get this issue figured out!

first, make sure your card is actually supported by RHL 6.2, there's a
list of supported / semi-supported cards/drivers in the ethernet HOWTO.
imagine it is, but make sure, and verify that the driver is loading
correctly (compiled or better, as a startup module).

otherwise, (i don't think) we don't recommend using the pump command.
get X working and use the netcfg python applet or Gnome Linuxconf (which
usually comes even without Gnome, but mine's broken) to verify that
everything is correct. /* it's not because it's graphical, it's because
the scripts can hit ALL the config files, better than we can */
if that's giving you trouble, go down to lab hours and ask the
net-tech. i'm not sure which all config files need to be messed with
(when i tried to do that after the summer, i failed) but the graphical
tools work great if you have them. ISR's got some of the best NetTech's
on campus; i know, I work with them (allen hall NetTech).

If Mandrake 7.0 has installed his CD writer the same way it installed
mine, he won't have to do anything other than change the fstab setting
for his CD to read scd0. All the emulation stuff is already there.

I installed Mandrake 7.0 using a Sony CDRWriter and because no ATAPI
driver was available for the drive, it was automatically installed with
a scsi emulation driver. The only problem I had, like the original
poster, was that the fstab file had been set up incorrectly.

Subject: Boot hangs when using DHCP and LinkSys cable router
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 20:06:57 GMT

The boot process hangs at 'bringing up interface eth0' when I use DHCP.

The NIC is an Accton EN1207D (RTL8129/8139 driver) and the DHCP server is a
LinkSys BEFSR41 NAT firewall/router/switch.

This happens with RedHat 7 RC2 (pinstripe), on 6.2 it would sometimes take
up to a minute to get eth0 up, but in most cases only a few seconds.

I will re-install using static TCPIP config and see what happens.

Any suggestions on getting this to work?

Ok ,so I am fairly sure that it is an operator induced error , but what made me
find this out is , I tried to mount a floppy disk ( a rare occurrance these days
) and I got an error "/dev/fd0 is not a block device (maybe try '-0 loop'?)"
which of course had me confused so I looked in the /dev directory and looked for
fd0 and lo and behold it didn't list as a block device , instead it showed up as
an actual file , so I think somehow I screwed this up , so my question is , how
do I get back my /dev/fd0 block device so I can mount my floppies ?
Or better said , how does one "creat" a block device and put it into the /dev
directory where it can be found by things like "mount" ?

Sheesh , how I did this I don't know , is it possible that I did a fdformat
command incorrectly , as it seems to me this all started happening after I tried
to format a floppy ..........

thanks for any help , man this sucks !

Ok , so after looking in "running linux" by oreilly I found out how to create a
device file for my fd0 , it is called "mknod" the only trouble is I am not sure
about the permissions as I am no security wiz , so anyway this is what I typed
in and it worked ! " mknod -m 666 /dev/fd0 b 2 0 " , now of course I have no
idea what permissions the 666 does for me but I am going to read and figure it
out , as I have always fallen back on the "running linux
" book , I highly reccomend it for newbies and hobbyists like me ;^)

Hope this may help other fumble fingers like me , I still don't know how I made
the /dev/fd0 into a binary file , but I did , and I can't find it in my bash
history either so anyway , on we go .........
