Not sure if your treble is non-adjustable or if you just don't notice the
difference. I have an old SB 16 ISA and the bass and treble controls work
fine in whatever KDE sound mixer panel (kmix) came with Mandrake 7.0
(updated generic kernel 2.2.17). I am directly driving Sony speakers with
the built-in SB amps (speaker power off). And the first options listed in
'man aumix' are:
OPTIONS
CHANNEL OPTIONS
-v main volume
-b bass
-t treble
Unless RH 7.0 is using the alsa drivers and the mixer controls are not
communicating the same.

Who is named running as and what are dir/file permissions of the
zone files it needs to write to? I am just a master for my little
LAN, but 'ps ax | grep named' shows:
31088 ? S 1:41 named -u nobody -g nogroup

So what headers does your script print out? At the very least it should
start with something like:
#!/bin/sh
echo Content-type: text/html
# or text/plain if not html (followed by blank line)
echo
# then do something useful
However, don't print any headers if you are going to redirect with a
Location: header (last header should always be followed by blank line).

The only thing different is that LILO has to go somewhere on the first
drive (unless you intend to floppy boot). LILO can be in the MBR of hda
or any of the 1st 4 hda non-Windows partitions. And if you have a LILO
under the 1024 cyl limitation it helps to have a 16 MB /boot partition
on some drive completely under cyl 1024.
Personally put /boot as hda1 marked as the active boot partition and put
LILO there, then I can boot Linux anywhere and do not have to worry about
Windows stepping on the MBR. But anywhere under cyl 1024 on the 1st drive
should work.

Subject: Strategy for networking on notebook?
Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 09:17:15 +0100
Has someone already developed a strategy (and respective implementation)
for network configuration on notebooks? (I'm using RH 7.0, butr this
shouldn't matter much).
Currently the machine on startup initializes the built-in ethernet
(which should always work since it's fixed, i.e. not PCMCIA) and runs
DHCP on it to obtain an IP and DNS information. If the notebook is not
connected to ethernet ("on the road") this fails after some long timeout
(about a minute or so, which is of course annoying in such
circumstances).
What better solutions are there?
- is it possible to detect, before going through the DHCP query, whther
there's an active link (i.e. cable connected to a hub or similar) on the
ethernet port, and if not abort configuring eth0?
- or should I simply try to dramatically reduce DHCP query timeout? (I
assume that is possible)
- since in a LAN one is ofter forced to use an http proxy (due to
firewalling) my next question is how to best configure that information
(does Netscape, for example, support $http_proxy?). Is it usually done
via DHCP?
Or should I try to set up a table with the respective information for
often-visited LANs and try to identify the current LAN via the
information provided in /etc/resolv.conf?
A similar situation applies to printers and ntp servers.
Solutions like Mobile IP or any other sort of tunneling, which would
require active support on the "remote end" are not feasable right now
(for me that is).
If there's a FAQ on hat issue (configuring a UNIX environment for a
mobile computer) I'd appreciate pointers to it. Thanks.

I tried to install the 2.4.1 kernel this evening. However, I cannot

Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?

I am having trouble adding users. I have tried to add users several
ways, some of which have indicated a problem due to a certain file
existing (/etc/ptmp or /etc/gtmp). I haven't been able to find
reference to either of these files anywhere. If anyone could shed some
light on this situation, I would be extremely grateful.
This is what I get when I try these user tools (system messages in
quotes)--
userdrake
- Will not start
"Cannot lock user lib, file /etc/ptmp or /etc/gtmp exist"
UserManager (KDE KUser)
- Hangs when trying to save new user.
Userconf
- Fails when saving.
- "smbpasswd: User test does not exist in system password file(usually
/etc/passwd). Cannot add account without a valid local system user."
adduser
- "vipw lockfile (/etc/ptmp) is present!"
useradd -g adm -m -p test22 -s /bin/bash test22
- "vipw lockfile (/etc/ptmp) is present!"

Hi,
i have a HDD with about 4000 cylinders. At the beginning of the HDD are
several OSs. Now i want to install SuSE 7.0 with the "old" LILO on my
system. The problem, is that LILO does not support installation over the
first 1024 cylinders and so setup does not install at all. Do i have an
opportunity to use the new lilo, that can install over the first 1024
cylinders, with the SuSE 7.0 CDs (no upgrade, but new installation).
Thanx

It's not an error.
> Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?
It means what it says (which word do you not understand?. "Skew"?
"Skew" is an english word meaning "warp", or "bias"). A skewed clock is
a warped clock. Since the make process depends on file creation times
to know what to make or rebuild when, obviously the results after
detecting a whacky system clock may be suspected to be skew-whiff
also.
You fix it by understanding the source of the problem, correcting it,
then repairing the effects.
Would you be running atop an nfs-mounted directory? Did you change the
date/time recently? Has your cmos battery expired? What ARE the times
on the files you are using? Tell us some of this - or tell yourself! -
and you'll get more info. The most probable cause depends on your
circumstances, so I can't guess. NFS?

Hope this helps you somewhat. For what its worth, the GeForce2's are amazing cards,
every
OpenGL-based program you have is automagically sped up. :) Quake3 rocks too.
