I can't get red hat 7 to install properly. I think it's because the
kernel resides (or will reside) beyond the 1023rd cylinder. The packages
install, but then I get a strange error regarding how my disk is greater
than 1024 cylinders during the post install configuration step. The
actual error message can not be read entirely, as it get cut off the
screen, and eventually disappears. The setup seems to continue as usual,
but then when it reboots, I find that LILO did not install as it should.
When I try to boot from the floppy created with the install, I get a OS
can not be found error message. Can anyone help me in getting LILO to
install properly?

Subject: lilo w/ mutible hard drives
Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 22:56:33 GMT
Hi,
i'm wondering if somebody can give me some advice on getting my machine to
work right.
I recently bought a new 60GB hard drive to supplant my old 8GB drive. The
8GB drive came from the dealer divided into 4 2GB partitions. my plan is to
run windows on the new drive, and have the old drive be all linux
(previously it only had 2GB allocated to it). finally, i'd like to mount
the new hard drive under linux like i used to have old 2GB win partitions
mounted.
when i installed Red hat 6.1, the installation didn't see anything connected
to the new controller card that came w/ my new drive. i supposedly
installed lilo, and created a boot disk. however, when i boot the computer
it goes directly to windows off the new drive, without stopping at the lilo
prompt. and when i try to boot from floppy, it hangs up (i tried twice to
create a boot floppy - 2 different disks - and they both failed).
right now, the 8GB drive is the primary master on the motherboard, while the
new drive is the primary master on the controller card that came with the
drive. my understanding is that my old (PII 400mhz) motherboard can't
handle the newer drive so i have to use the controller card.
so, how can i get lilo working, and how can i get linux to recognize my new
hard drive so i can mount it under linux?
-Thanks,
Scott

Can you please recommend a text based ftp client for Mac or PC? I not
having luck finding any to install and try your test. I've never used one
or heard of my server users having any need to use a command line ftp
client, and I still don't understand how it will help solve my issue.
As mentioned previously I've tried multiple gui ftp clients on multiple
platforms. Checking "show hidden files" on and off in these gui ftp clients
does not solve my issue (as mentioned before also). This is definitely a
server setup issue.
It would help if you could be more specific about what your test would
reveal. Please don't be sadistic if I don't understand your advise. It's
unprofessional unproductive, and waste of this newsgroups bandwidth and is
becoming personally offensive. My brain is engaged!

Hello,
really odd, I saw this SPAM too....
You should have a ~/.newsrc-news.your_newsgroup_server_name file
delete the line cotaining the newsgroup you have trouble with and suscribe
again,
or if not working, try deleting the whole newserver from the NS Mail &
News GUI.

Hey Kieron
I asked an almost idenitical question earlier this week. Check out the that
thread (from 2/15/01). The short answer I got was that my mouse was
probably an intelli-mouse and needed a different setting. Run XF86Config
and choose IMPS/2. It worked for me - hope it helps you too.

Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 00:12:43 GMT
Sorry if this is not the appropriate thread to post.
I have Linux Mandrake installed on one of the partitions on my harddrive. I also have
Win95 on my
primary partition so I can duo boot both Win95 and Linux. My HD is very small and now
I want to
uninstall the entire Linux Mandrake to free up some space.
Is there a more elegant way of doing this without having to delete the partition in
which Linux
Mandrake resides? If deleting the partition is necessary, which partitioning program
do you
recommend for this job?
Thanks very much for your help. Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It can be done, you need a patched X server. Have a look at
www.ozetechnology.com/howtos/dell_i5000.html
this details how to make it work.
Please mail me if you still have problems.

Edit /etc/XF86Config
find the "Pointer section"
ignore all the garbage that is commented for a straight PS/2 mouse
thsese lines should get you going:
Protocol "PS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
Comment out any other lines, you may want to play with them later but these
two should work.

All this that I snipped sounds very wierd, I think RH 7 probably not only
matters but is the exact problem. You may want to try one of RH's support

Sounds to me like flaky memory or disk. I am assuming you are either using
<ctrl><alt><delete> or shutdown -r now, if not then you are trashing the
disk because the buffers aren't getting written to disk.

No. The thing is you need to delete the partition anyways to change it
from linux ext2 and linux swap to windows compatible partitions (fat 16
or fat 32). And if you used lilo to choose between linux and windows,
you need to fix the master bootrecord as well.
linux or dos fdisk, remove all non dos/windows partitions, then use all
free space as a new windows partition.
Then "fdsik \mbr" IIRC to fix the master bootrecord. Reboot for all
changes to take effect, especially for those regarding partitioning
tables.

Something else you may want to know about. The i840 chipset has a
defective IO-APIC that can hang up under heavy i/o or sometimes
mount/umount. It sends an irq 217 to handler that doesn't exist. Should
you run into hangs, you'll probably want to boot with kernel option
"noapic". This means only the first cpu will handle hardware irq's, and
thus become less responsive under load, but both cpu's will be used
still for applications that can use them normally. If you search through
/var/log/messages, you'll see notes about unexpected IO-APIC.

Try creating a file xx_local.sh with your path addition:
export PATH=$PATH:/JDK1.2.2/bin
place it in /etc/profile.d and
chmod +x /etc/profile.d/xx_local.sh
next login should have /JDK1.2.2/bin in $PATH

Inserting a file in another does not do anything to it, let alone "lose all
its formatting". The problem is yours (perceptional, or procedural).

And what do you think using mime does, apart from insert it into the
body of text with a couple of lines beforehand saying that a mime
section follows?
Reconsider. You have no problem, really. You just don't understand that.
If you want to use mime attachments, I find elm -a works fine.
