Hi,
I updated my Red Hat to RH7.
I am now trying to install latex2html, but when I type make install, I
get the message
bash: make: command not found

Note that before i updated the system, I had done a installation using
the make command and it had worked fine.

How can I figure out what's going on and fix it so that i can install my
latex2html??
thanks for your help (note that i am not very familiar with linux
configuration and the system itself).

Do you have the option of using fdisk instead of disk druid? I had
similar problems when installing RH7.0 and had to bounce back and forth
between the two utils until I had it right. Its been a while now, but
ISTR that I had to partition the drives with fdisk, and name them with
druid or some such similar scenario.

Unforch, the use of the corel distro means you will probably have an
orphaned distro as corel is making noises about getting out of the
linux business. They're denying that the microsoft rescue money has
anything to do with that of course. And pigs fly too.

I think I'd try another distro, one thats going to be around a year from
now.

Cheers, Gene

I am still trying to get efax to work. I can send fax, no problem at all,
but I can't receive fax by simply using the "fax" script. I had success
with "efax -or -d /dev/ttyS1 reply". Anyway, I am still playing with it.

I am using a USR Courier V.Everything external modem, so if anyone is
using the same modem with efax, please email me your "fax" script.

This is strange, because the only system that I know of that responds to a
telnet request like this (especially with the banner "User Access
Verification") is a CISCO router. Are you sure that your Linux box isn't
sharing the same IP address as a router on your network.

Sounds to me like you are using an already existing IP address on the
network. You might like to contact your Domain Name Server or network
engineer to ensure that you are using the correct IP address. As for the
logout it could quite possibly be as a result of sharing the same IP address.
Failing that, it might be a shell issue. I know that with the "tcsh" you can
issue a command like: unset autologout or unset auto-logout which stops the
automatic idle time logout from activating.

See ya

Or you can go to the 2.2.18 kernel if you don't want to do the 2.4 thing.
You may have other upgrades to get the system ready for 2.4. With 2.2.18,
you get pretty good usb support and you will not need to do other upgrades
like to modutils.

I'm looking for help setting up a Linux box, running Red Hat 7.0 to allow a
dial up account to use when away. The box is connected to the net on a
static IP, a modem is connected through a serial port for incoming calls.

Mgetty with AutoPPP to a serial modem looks like a solution, but getting
this to work on RH version 7.0 is not easy.

Does anyone have a successful HowTO on this subject?

 Thanks in advance!

There is a special module for Netmeeting. I don't remmember de name

In the case of the games, it occurs the same. It exists modules for

Been down the same road as you. I have a Dell Latitude Ls which I use in
many settings including at work as part of a regular dhcp managed network.
My problem at work is that for some reason with the integrated 3com 59x
chipset (vortex/boomerang), SuSE 7.1 will hang hard on trying to setup the
interface to the point of not continuing the booting sequence. I never saw
this before with Debian 2.2r1. I also use this system with a wavelan
wireless card at home and on the road either using ppp or highspeed internet
in hotels. The only part that stings me now is starting the laptop with
eth0 enabled and no wired connection present. So what I did is to write a
little "bootnet" script which I run after booting. By default, I start the
laptop with no network setup in YAST for eth0. When I get to work, I run
the script which basically does a /sbin/dhcpcd and then prints out the
results of ifconfig to satisfy me that I got a wired ethernet address from
the dhcp server. I participate on a linux network at work, BTW.

Now at home, the wavelan card uses pcmcia services so I just let it rip
using the default "scheme" and I get an eth0 up with the network settings
for wireless.

On the road, if I connect using highspeed hotel access, I still want dhcpcd
so I run my script and if I use a modem (blech), I use wvdial to initiate a
ppp session with earthlink.

I have seen some apps at freshmeat which will do some or all of this using
scripts. My approach works pretty reliably and I get no hesitation at boot
time. It does mean I run a little script after my system comes up. There
are some good mobile guides out there and some pointers to multiple network
configurations on laptops. Since I cannot get past the booting stage often,
I just use my little script which starts dhcpcd whenever I need it.

Looks like you have some troble on your disk fsck doesn't want to fix
automatically and therefore puts you into read-only mode so that you can
run fsck and correct the problem safely. Try to run fsck /dev/hdXY in
this ro-mode.

Well, I tried a fews BIOS settings changes in an attempt to

"un ATA" my system, but no luck fixing the reboot problem.

I wonder if using SCSI disks (off a PCI SCSI controller)

will help?

> (However, the reboot suggests that the kernel itself did load,

Just before the actual reboot I see several messages announcing that

various filesystems are being unmounted. I believe these are the ones

built during the installation, so it seems that there was a kernel loaded

during the install process. However, the CDROM was bootable, so

maybe it loaded a kernel itself?

Perry

Here's the rundown on my hardware setup:

SuperMicro 370DLE motherboard

    - AMIBIOS V07.00.xx

        - Build date = 10/21/00

        - BIOS ID = 3DL1021

    - 800Mhz PIII CPU, 133Mhz system bus

    - 128M registered PC133 DIMM

    - ServerWorks ServerSet III LE chipset

        - 2 64 bit PCI-66Mhz slots

        - 3 32 bit PCI-33Mhz slots

            - MagicVideo 3D-EP PCI graphics card

        - 2 ATA66 connectors

            - Primary IDE slot:

                Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 20.4Gb 7200RPM ATA100 disk

                Model 5T020H2 (16383cyl, 16hd, 63sectors)

Jumpers set to be master device

ATA cable (got same error using the IDE cable)

            - Secondary IDE slot (master):

                Creative Labs 52x CDROM

Jumpers set to be master device

                IDE cable

            - 1 ISA slot (empty)

        - Vanilla 3.5" floppy

Some BIOS settings (all the factory defaults except where noted):

- System BIOS cacheable = enabled

- Onboard SCSI = Enabled (even though the 370DLE has no SCSI ports)

(I retried with this disabled, no change in behavior)

- Plug & Play OS = No (Bios configures all devices)

- Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA = Yes

- ACPI Aware O/S = Yes

- Power Management = Enabled

- Hard Disk Power Down Mode = Disabled

- Primary Master IDE settings:

    - LBA Mode = Supported

    - Block Mode = 16 sectors (BIOS will multiblock xfers with disk)

    - PIO Mode = 4

    - Async DMA = MultiWord DMA-2

    - Ultra DMA = Ultra DMA-1

    - S.M.A.R.T = Supported

    - 32 Bit data transfer = Enabled

- IRQ1 = Monitor (I presume for auto power-up)

- Boot Device Priority (I changed these from the defaults)

    - 1st = Floppy

    - 2nd = ATAPI CDROM

    - 3rd = Hard Drive

    - 4th = Intel UNDI, PXE-2.

I retried the installation after disabling the onboard SCSI

(which dosen't exist on this motherboard) and turning off

LBA, Block Mode and Multiword DMA xfer. I still got the

same result.
