Hi everybody,
I've just installed linux (Debian 2.2) on my old PC, and I'm
experciencing some serious hard disk problems at booting. I get the
following error message at the end of the boot sequence:

Parallelizing fsck version 1.18 (11-Nov-1999)
/dev/hdb3 contains a file system with errors. Check forced.
Inode 1009985 has imagic flag set
/dev/hdb3 UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY
RUN fsck MANUALLY (i.e. without -a or -p options)
To remount it read-write
# mount -n -o remount,rw /
CONTROL-D will exit from the shell and REBOOT the system.
Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D for normal
startup):_

My computer has also win95 installed on its first disk (/dev/hda), and
linux on its second (/dev/hdb). hdb contains a root partition, a swap
one, a normal 'user' one (/dev/hdb3 should be the user one), and a
FAT-16 partition which is shared with win95.
Has anybody already have such a problem ? Could it be that win95
corrupts the hdb3 partition of the linux disk (to which is normally has
no access, but it has access to the last FAT partition of hdb).
I've already tried to reinstall the whole linux system, without
improvement, and running fsck manually only makes things worse (after a
few times, even /proc is not found any more).
Thanks in advance for any help (I'm at my wit's end.)

One thing that may be happening is that the device is slowly dying on
you. That is the most common cause of file system errors that do not go
away.

I dial into RH6.2 on a statics address on the internet from W98.
I can ping,traceroute,ftp and resolving works from the W98 dialup,
but I cannot browse!!
IE on W98 says website found eg to http://www.somedomain.com
but then no browsing happens.
I can browse via the same RH6.2 box on the internal network. (using Squid as
my cache from W98)
Please help as I am losing hair fast.

Ugh! I've thought about that, but I hoped to be wrong. My slave disk is
brand new... By my first linux installation I had windows "intensively"
check the last hdb partition (hdb5, about one half of the disk), and
MS-scandisk did not report any problem.
Actually windows is (apparently) working fine with this hdb partition. I
first thought that this thorough windows check might be the cause for my
troubles, so I reinstalled linux with the poor results I mentionned
before.
Hoping your assumption won't turn out to be true...

first off, i managed to get into linux by digging deeper into my bios settings
until i found an option to make the on-board hard drive the primary bios disk &
not the pci card, rather than use the ultra-dma how-to approach. so question
#1 is, when i finally get everything working, does it make a difference which is

primary bios disk? i understand that the configuration that i have to set up in
linux
will change, but is it a 6-of-one half-dozen-of-the-other choice between the
drive
off the motherboard being the first bios disk versus the one off the new card, or

some sort of benefit to having one over the other?

question #3: based on what Markus told me & what i understand about lilo, i've
come up with the following lilo.conf file that i'd like to get somebody'd

real addresses to use).

on my computer. I am using Boot Magic to control my bootup, but I cannot get
it to boot Linux. When I select RedHat Linux from the BM screen is gives me
a dos screen and says:

I chose 'Update' from the CD-Rom installation. First I didn't upadte all
the packages, but then today I updated all the packages, but it still
doesn't work. Now i could not be sure that I didn't remove any...

Actually, that's kind of what I meant when I recommended an "upgrade".
I didn't actually mean to do the distro's "upgrade" install... just to
get a newer distro. Mea culpa for the linguistic imprecision.
I have in fact had some bad experiences in doing Red Hat's idea of
an "upgrade", problems that did not appear when doing a straight
"install".

Hello all: I have md7,2 installed. All is ok, I think, (I'm really new at
this, but learning) but the printer is doing funny stuff. All the files are
there and the thing responds from a comand in a terminal window (KDE2) but
when I try to print from KWord I get:
Error: /undefined in FE23, Operand stack; F1, Execution stack, %interp_exit,
unexec2 --nostringval-- etc.

Any ideas about what is wrong? I don't even know where to start, I can't
find anything in man or info about any of that. It's a Canon BJ10sx and it's
old, but it works fine with WinMe and Word 2K.

Using Debian 2.2, exclusively console (Bash) with a mono monitor.
The problem is that the monitor will only display 4 shades of grey!.
Black, white, mid grey and bright white, though 16M shades of gray are
visible in W*nd**s.
Is it possible for me to define say 16 or even 8 grey tones for use when
basic 'colour' support is needed?.

thanks everyone for your help. It worked - however I now understand that when
one mounts c: as a directory that operations on that directory effect C: it is
not some how a copy - dont know why I thought it was! just to make you laugh a
bit i did an rm -rf * and deleted nearly all files on C:!!! hours of fun Linux
- still I learning fast.

I appreciate your concern. However I find it very frustrating when I ask one
question and get a totally unrelated answer. I seem to get unrelated answers
more often than I get my questions answered.
For instance: How do I tell if my modem is an ISA or a PCI? Answer: you
dont, go buy an external modem. Real helpful! See what I mean?

My external "Mr Modem" by Microcomputer Research Ltd (UK)
http://www.mri.co.uk/ does not appear to be responding. The modem has a
Rockwell chipset.
I go into Yast and select intergrate hardware into system and then Modem
Configuration. This produces a sorry could not find modem message. Yet
when I try to dial up via KDE and Kppp one of the lights on the modem
flash on and stay on while and attempt is made to initialize and dial.
But no dialling occurs and Intialization fails. I move it from one port
to another only to have the same result, and the lights flash.
Of course it worked under the dreaded Win 95. It is not a Winmodem,
before anyone asks.
I conclude from this that the modem is being found but initialization is
failing.
There is no mention of this modem on SuSe's site. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hmm. Don't know what to make of that.
On my system, make and gcc, etc, are installed in /usr/bin. If make is not
there, or in /usr/local/bin or another directory in your path, then that
would explain your original error message.
What distribution of Linux are you using? Does it use RPMs for installs?

Three hours, a couple of dozen man pages, and several HOWTO's later I think
I have figured out what is wrong. I am following the insructions from the
PPP-HOWTO. (This may get a little long,sorry) I am logged in as root. Redhat
5.2. Minicom. Kernel 2.0.36.
Open minicom and establish a connection, login, then quit without resetting
the modem...ok.
At prompt type: pppd -d -detach /dev/cua0 38400 &...ppp connection is
established...ok.
At prompt type: ifconfig...this shows the PPP interface...I wont write all
that it says here, but it looks just like the example with a different ip
address...it also says UP and RUNNING...ok.
At prompt type: route -n...it says I should see at least 3 interfaces here
that look like this:

Window Use Iface
10.144.153.3 * 255.255.255.255 UH 1500
0 1 ppp0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U
3584 0 11 lo

Mine looks like the above (with a different ip address), but I dont have the
default entry or the eth0 entry. Just the first two lines. According to the
HOWTO if you dont have both ppp0 interfaces, then this is a problem.
"In particular if your syslog shows a message telling you your pppd is not
replacing an existing default route, then you have a default route pointing
at your Ethernet interface - which MUST be replaced by a specific network
route: YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE DEFAULT ROUTE!!!
You will need to explore your system initialization files to find out where
this default route is being set up (it will use a route add
default...command). Change this command to something like route add net...."
That is an exact quote.
The instructions continue, the way they are set up is: Step 1. Work? Step 2.
Work? Step 3. etc.
So when I reached a point where one step failed I didnt expect the remaining
steps to work, and they didnt. If I understand it correctly I need to fix
this problem before I can continue to the next step. So my question is how
do I set up that default route? I looked for a syslog but cant find that. I
did find /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/messages, but no reference is made to a
default route. In afterstep there is Network Configuration, when that is
opened I find that the routing tab is not filled out. But I dont know if
that is what I am looking for or not.
I think that the Default Route is the root of my problem.

ps. Lots of people have told me to use ttyS* instead of cua* as cua* is
obsolete. I have tried and it doesnt work on my system. Perhaps it is
obsolete, but keep in mind I am using an older distribution.
