Ranish Partition Manager will let you set up Linux partitions, but it won't
format them. However, Mandrake it will format any existing Linux partitions
during the installation.

Look into downloading (or getting from CD) Loadlin.exe and VMLinuz boot image.
The challenge will be figuring out which partition to boot from. For instance
I boot from
/dev/hdb1
Read up on Loadlin and you will understand more.

Hi:-)
Did you compile the kernel? If so maybe you overlooked the option
use Kernel module-loader in the Loadable module support...
You can check it (as su or root) cd /usr/src/linux type make
menu config and you can see if you enabled the option, just so no when
asked to save the new configuration....

Well, this is my first help post, so be careful, I'm not so sure about
what I'm telling you.
I installed Suse and then wanted to reinstall Windows & put linux in a
second partition, but fdisk didn'work.
I had to use delpart.exe (I found it somewhere on the net) to rebuild my
partitions.
Did you try that?

it depends on the BIOS. some BIOSes don't have this restriction. but
unless you are sure about your bios it's safer to make an extra
partition just for the kernel(s)
>i have redhat myself (6.0) and it didn't force me to do anything. redhat

depends on what you are trying to do: i recently had to set up a few
machines for dual boot (both linux). on one machine it worked fine,
on the other lilo woudn't boot into the second system.
>maybe you should try and get some support on diskdruid or read it's manual

when you select "advanced install" it gives you the choice between
diskdruid and fdisk. if you have a potential bios / lilo / disk size
problem, fdisk is the better choice. diskdruid seems to always move
the last partition you defined to the start of the disk and move
everything else into a secondary partition without giving the user any
control about where to place them. even if you set up your partitions
before the install it will happily ignore and overwrite your setup (at
least i didn't find any way to prevent it from doing it). btw,
chosing "advanced installation" seems to be the only way to use fdisk.

I had a LOT of trouble with -test7 until I upgraded modutils. It's now clear
that the
/lib/modules/`uname -r has changed structure. Is that what you are seeing? Dunno,
but
upgrading modutils is going to be a good idea, anyway.

bzzzt... try another configuration. You're not far off, but it is
easier to keep linux as the master drive and the win drive as the
slave. I have a similar configuration. Here's my section that concerns
windows:
other=/dev/hdb1
label=win
map-drive = 0x80
to = 0x81
map-drive = 0x81
to = 0x80
Reconfigure your hard drives (linux=/dev/hda, win=/dev/hdb), boot into
linux, and use the above lines in your /etc/lilo.conf. Run lilo. Run
lilo again.
If you can't boot using the hard drive, use your rescue disk, and do the
above.
The map-drive function can be found in the lilo user's guide.

The way I achieved this, from NT4 to 2000AS, was just
installing 2000 then using my boot floppy to get to
linux boot(since 2000 so generously rewrote my MBR
without asking) reconfigured LILO and ran it. Can
say much for BootMagic but LILO worked like a charm.

use the RH install CD to remove the partitions you created for linux
(probably /dev/hda6 and up), then you can use dos FDISK.EXE to recreate
your E:
BTW. your C: is /dev/hda1 in linux,
your D: is /dev/hda5 in linux (1st logical inside /dev/hda2)

Subject: Extended partition trouble
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 13:41:57 GMT
Hi everbody, Please help, I've got myself in a bad problem. ANY comments/help
is much appreciated. In short, I installed win98se in one partition
(primary), a few days later, i installed linux (eDesktop 2.4) in a logical
partition inside a extended partition. System Commander controls the boot
process. After boot in linux, the system will not boot anymore unless i use
some program to mark the first primary partition as active. Now, if the
above isn't enough to catch the problem here are the details: I have a
Fujistu 12GB HD that is partitioned as bellow:
| primary | primary | primary | extended (9397MB) (hda4) | | 604MB |
604MB | 902MB | 101MB | 3004MB | 2000MB | 4290MB | | Win98SE |
Win98SE | WinME | linux swap | linux ext2 | linux ext2 | fat32 | | hda1
| hda2 | hda3 | hda5 | hda6 | hda7 | hda8 |
When i choose boot the linux in hda7, System Commander marks hda4 (extended)
and hda7 as bootable. After i reboot the system, System Commander don't
appear anymore. Instead i receive a message asking for a boot/system disk. I
need use SCDISK from System Commander to mark hda1 as bootable to the system
boot again and System Commander take control. Another way is run cfdisk in
linux before reboot to mark hda1 as bootable.
What is wrong? In other situations i already use System Commander with a
configuration like this and have no trouble. Lilo is installed on hda7.
Thanks for help!
P.S.: sorry for my poor english! ;^)
