30-40 seconds is way too long to wait for a hard drive to spin up.
Perhaps it has more to do with networking. Try these
1) When it is "asleep", log in _at the console_, and see if it works
then. If ok, then try logging in from a net connection. If slow, then try
logging using the IP address, and not the name.
eg. "telnet 192.168.0.1" instead of "telnet somehost"
If this works find, then you probably have a resolver issue. Perhaps you
don't have reverse lookups configured properly.

Can you hear the hard drive spin up when you do these.

Don't these warnings pop up if you're using an unreleased compiler from the
gcc-3.0-to-be branch?
If so, I don't think they are a problem; the kernel code is not (yet?)
warning-free for these compilers. (On the other hand, there is no
particular reason to expect that these compilers do the right thing with
the kernel code; some distributions provide an earlier compiler under the
name "kgcc" for these purposes.)

Thanks!
This did the trick, everything is working great.
Let's make it just a bit more complicated... anyone know how to set up the
modem for "Ring Master" ? I'm using a US Robotics Sportster #00568602

Hi,
I have just installed Slackware 7.1 (actually Slackware-current),
and also upgraded the kernel to 2.4.1.
Everything is ok, except my Sound Blaster 16 doesn't work anymore,
and all of my K programs don't compile anymore. For example,

following errors :

since, i believe, redhat 6.2 requires a password for single-user access, try
this:
1.) at the lilo prompt type "image_name init=/bin/bash"
2.) after the system come up with a prompt, type "mount -t ext2 -o
remount,rw /dev/hdaX /" where 'X' is the partition number
3.) then type "/usr/sbin/useradd new"
4.) then "/usr/bin/passwd new" and assign new a password
5.) now type "chmod 666 /etc/passwd"
6.) now, reboot the system and log in as new
7.) edit the /etc/passwd file and update new's UID and GID to 0 (zero)
8.) switch to a new virtual terminal and login as new
9.) change root's password with "/sbin/passwd root"
pay close attention to spaces and syntax, although i am sure you know what
you're doing!

I just installed Mandrake 7.2 from scratch all over again, this

However, although it appears in my Gnome 'Window Manager' section
switchdesk reports that it's not installed.
Do I have to run something beforehand? I tried doing that with

Try putting "DefaultColorDepth 24" into the "Screen" section and
in the "Display" SubSection for Depth 24 put a line like the following:
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
(Change to include whatever modes you want to support).
Also, please don't post HTML to Usenet.

I removed the 8.3 libraries (even though it said there were
dependencies..installed the 8.0.5 series of tcl and tk....and TKinter
installed all right. I was goint to then upgrade the 8.0's back to 8.3
but I got the warning about those libraries mentioned above so I decided

BTW.. How do I start the IDLE in Linux???

update my RH 7.0, kernel 2.2.16, to kernel 2.4, but without a modem, it is
kind of hard.
If anyone has this modem working in Linux kernel 2.2.16 or less, please, let

Subject: USB printer
Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 22:12:44 -0700
I have a usb printer I'm trying to get to work with Mandrake 7.2. I
have the 2.4.2-pre3 kernel.
I have tried compiling the usb stuff as modules and directly into the
kernel. I can get as far as the driver recognizing that there is a
printer attached, but when I try to send something to /dev/usb/lp0,
nothing happens. I have send directly to this device, and also set up a
printer with the Mandrake setup tools.
I don't get any error message. If I look at the print queue immediately
after entering an lpr command, it shows the job there, and then the job
goes away, so I think the print services believe they have sent the data
to the printer, but nothing prints.
I have a feeling that the answer is that I would need a driver for my
particular printer (Compaq A1000). But I was hoping there might be
something I have overlooked.
I have a fair amount of experience administering Linux, and I'm not
afraid to dig in to things, but I don't know where to go from here. Any
suggestions appreciated.

Subject: Ker-Clunk on Western Digital Drive - Normal for Linux?
Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 05:50:45 GMT
Folks,
I know that's a real technical term (ker-clunk, that is), but that is
what I am hearing from my drive.
It is a WD400BB, a 40GB drive from Western Digital. This is my fifth
Western Digital drive (the other 4 are still in service with no
problems), and I have been very impressed and happy with their quality
(thus far).
However, occasionally I will hear a 'ker-clunk' sound from the drive.
And after I have thought about it, I seem to only hear it when using
Linux.
The only thing I can think of is that I put my /boot partition near
the front of the drive, and the rest of the linux files are at the
back of the drive, and the sound I get is when it goes back and forth.
(I did this because I was installing Redhat v6.2, and could not get
LILO to work otherwise, as the main partition was past the 1024 cyl.)
Is this normal? I have never had this happen before, but then again,
I never have had to split the /boot and / partitions for linux. Does
the system have to occasionally go back to the /boot drive, and thus
causing this problem?
Anybody else had this experience? If you have, has it only been in
linux with this configuration, or has it been with Windows 9X., NT,
etc.?
I've called WDC and asked them about this, and they say the problem
must be in the controller, the cable, or the power supply (I think he
was reading off the web site!) To be fair, I did run extended
diagnostics on the drive, and it reports ok.
I've got maybe a week to take it back (bought it 1/28/01), then I'd
have to RMA it with WDC.
Any suggestions on what's going on or what I should do?
Thanks in advance,
RJ
