Another method.
Since you just built your RedHat 6.2, get a Wu-FTPd expliot if your FTP
server is running and hack your sever to gain root access.

because I'm lazy. because the OP seemed to be new to Linux, and maintaining
several version levels can require bit of tweaking. because I've been around
the barn with tcl/tk, Expect, and friends that won't build unless they can
find the right version and its hidden headers, etc. because I am not sure if
the OP could rpm 8.0 onto his system without forcing the install.
I've also been around the barn with earlier RH releases that came with
broken Python and Perl packages, and 7.0 had its share of alpha and beta
builds dressed up as stable packages.
Many people enjoy the sysadmin aspects of Linux, but as the OS gains
popularity, more users just want to get the job done, without a lot of
complications and surprises.

Either get a program like PartitionMagic (Easy to use, but not for free) or
use
a program like GNU's parted (Which contains sufficient documentation)
Both can repartition your HDD non-destructively.
But you should still back-up any important data before you start, just to
be on the safe side.

I use to be able to be logged in as a non-root user and when I started
an application that required root, would get a password prompt for root
access. Now that no longer happens. I have poked around with PAM, it
looks like the pam.d files are sufficient (although I may be wrong), but
worse yet, changes to the pam.d files do not have any affect.
Is there a way that PAM is turned on and off? Could I have mistakenly
turned it off?
I am running RH 7.0, Gnome 1.2, PAM .72. Any help is appreciated.

Let me guess: you have a dual boot with windows AND you have
at least one hard disk that is only linux (full of stuff with no DOS
or WIN partition). If I guessed correctly, then you have encountered
a nemesis of mine: Windows is seeking forever to find its spot on
that non-DOSWIN disk. I have mentioned this many times in this
newsgroup, but no one submits a fix to Bill to be included in the next
release of the kernel. A quick fix is to put a tiny DOS or WIN
partition on each non-doswin disk.

AFAIK, USB printers don't require any special USB drivers, but any
non-PostScript printer will require Ghostscript drivers to get output
from most programs, and sometimes even plain-text output. If your
printer has a status light that blinks when it receives input, you could
examine that to determine whether the printer is receiving your output
file.
I'm not familiar with the Compaq A1000 in particular, but some printers
do require output in their own particular codes. I just checked on
http://www.linuxprinting.org, and found no listing for it. Other Compaq
models are re-badged Lexmarks, though, and with a few exceptions (like
the Optra Color 40 and 45), Lexmark inkjets are notoriously unusable
under Linux because they use proprietary protocols for which no
Ghostscript drivers are available. It's possible you're running into
this brick wall. If so, the only solutions are to write your own
Ghostscript driver or to replace the printer.

Hi there:
I just got through a totally successfull dual-boot installation of Red
Hat 7.0 (and Win98), with one exception.
As soon as I booted my PC into Linux for the 1st time, I noticed that
the HD light keeps blinking. You can hear the drive being accessed
once a second, non-stop. The funny thing is this: when I stick a CD
in my IDE CD-R drive, it stops. When I take the CD out, it starts
again. Everything else runs fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave M.

QUERY OPTIONS
The general form of an rpm query command is
rpm -q [query-options]
...
-p <package_file>
Query an (uninstalled) package <package_file>. The
<package_file> may be specified as an ftp or http
style URL, in which case the package header will be
downloaded and queried. See FTP/HTTP OPTIONS for
information on RPM's built-in ftp and http client
support.
...
-i Display package information, including name, ver-
sion, and description. This uses the --queryformat
if one was specified.
...
--provides
List capabilities this package provides.
...
-l, --list
List files in package.
-c, --configfiles
List only configuration files (implies -l).
--scripts
List the package specific shell scripts that are
used as part of the installation and uninstallation
processes, if there are any.
So to query the package information you use the options q, i, and p.
rpm -qip package.version.rpm
To list the files in a specific package use the option l.
rpm -qlp package.version.rpm
To only list the configurationfiles use the options qlc, to list the
installation scripts add the option --scripts.
rpm -qp --scripts package.version.rpm

I think I am having a similar if not the same problem you are having. I
reinstalled Mandrake 7.2 and my floppy and my CD-RW show in file manager
with a padlock as part of the icon. Whenever I try to access the CD-ROM I
get 'You do not have Access Rights" type of error. There must be some way
to unlock them. I also wonder if there is a way to get Linux to re-detect
my CD-ROM to make sure the the hardware is properly installed with drivers
and initialized and such. JH

Obviously you may have already solved your problem and installed Linux on
your second hard drive. If not, all your really have to do is boot from
your Redhat install CD. Eventually in the install process you will be
asked to partition one of your hard drives using FDISK or Disk Druid.
Just make sure you are partitioning the second drove. In Disk Druid you
should be able to see both drives and recognize which one is your extra,
soon to be Linux drive. Partition that drive with at least a root /
partition, /usr and /home. After that the rest of the installation is like
any other. JH

I have a Hayes Accura 56k data/fax modem and I am running HylaFax under

operations remotely. I haven't been able to ascertain whether this modem
supports adaptive answering but have assumed that it can.

as if the incoming call is a fax even when it isn't. If the call is a data call
it then hangs up.
