Subject: USR modem in Red Hat 7.0
Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 11:46:07 GMT
I have an US Robotics 5610A build 0778 (hardware controlled) modem that is
not
recognized in Linux kernel 2.2.16. I understand this modem is not supposed
to work in any Linux kernel less than 2.3, however, several people have told
me they have seen them work in kernel 2.2 and lower.
When checking this modem in WINDOZE ME, it is reported to be on COM 5.
Never seen a modem that puts itself out that far. I can find the controller
for the modem in Linux, using lspci, but it does not report it as a modem.
I have tried the AUTO CONFIG in GNOME, and in KDE, but it does not find the
modem. I am willing to write, or rewrite code, but need to know what to
write, since I am not a programmer, and new to LINUX. I love the LINUX
operating system so far, but without a modem, I am stuck dual booting with
WINDOZE.
I would appreciate any advice on how to set this modem up. I have been to
several sites, and read what they have there, but nothing specific to my
problem shows up.

Hello
I have a linux (Suse 6.4) box running samba. i include my smb.conf below.
I have a problem accessing shares from windows NT and 2000.
I do see my server (name Apache) in the Neighboork Network but I can't

Everything works fine when doing an access from Windows 98: Any hint on how
to solve this?
i also include the error log from samba when my NT machine wants to connect

After you unpack the kernel check out the file linux/Documentation/Changes.

Hi there,
When booting the system RH7.0 goes through its filesystem checks. After
checking the swap partition halts with an error message stating that the
superblock maybe corrupted and to use e2fsck -b 8193 (I think) <device>.
I have done it with no avail.
Are there some tricks I could use before reinstalling the OS?

Hi!
I have Mandrake 7.2 running on my machine. The sound card is a SB Live!
Platinum. I could not get any sound from the Live Drive when using the OSS
drivers, so decided to try out ALSA instead.
- The install of ALSA 0.9 beta 1 drivers went fine.
- The install of ALSA 0.9 beta 1 lib went fine.
- NONE of the utils or apps will compile!
Running ./configure for any of the utils/apps gives this:
<snip!>
checking for ALSA LDFLAGS... -lasound
checking for libasound headers version >= 0.1.3... found
checking for snd_cards in -lasound... no
configure: error: No linkable libasound was found.
- All of my X-Windows OSS based apps seem to work ok with the ALSA
driver.
What am I doing wrong, or not doing at all?
Regards,
Jako Grobler

US Robotics 56K Sportster Modem, Model 5686
This modem is reported to support distinctive ring mode. Had anyone had
success using this feature with mgetty to answer on a normal ring only and
NOT on a distinctive ring type call?
For those that might not have distinctive ring service in their area, this
feature is provided by the local telephone company to alter the ring style
on two phone numbers connected to one line. A long ring (normal) designates
a call on one number (say a fax or data call) and two short rings on a
different number (same line) for voice calls.
Thanks!

It looks like you have to tell configure where the
ALSA library resides that you installed before.
There should be an option available for this.
Run
./configure -help
and look for a switch --with-alsa-lib or similar.

Hi Ken,

I think this is going to boil down to the fact that the modem may not actually
know how to respond to the second ring other than to give the standard Hayes
response of RING. Do you know whether or not your modem can differentiate
between the rings in its hardware because from memory I think mgetty works off
the basis of looking for a "RING" singal to be sent to the computer from the
modem.
See ya

Subject: Re: install scripts RedHat (SSH2.3.0)
Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 15:26:57 +0100
The problem is that my server is an old RedHat 5.2
There are no ssh2 rpms available for this release.
I can find openssh and ssh2 rpm for redhat 6.x and 7.x but not for 5.2.
I tried to compile the openssh on the server.
For that I had to compile and install openSSL and zlib.
But the openssh still didn't compile.
So I dowloaded and installed a source rpm of ssh2.3.0 and compiled and
installe the thing manually.
Seems to work.
Also found its possible to rebuild to an binairy rpm.
I think that should work also because I manually could compile it.
Just rebuilding the source rpm for RedHat 7.0 to one for RedHat 5.2.
Thanks for the advice.

FYI, the original poster mailed me saying my guess was right and his
problem is fixed.
What you are referring to is when PAM operates correctly (performs
authentication according to the relevant configuration file for the utility)
but that the user is denied access based on the credentials
(e.g. username/password) he supplies. In this case, the PAM
configuration file for GDM was missing and hence authentication could
not be done at all.

That's because Windows 3.1/3.11 wasn't an OS; it was a GUI environment
with some OS-like features. It didn't include filesystems, for instance;
that was provided by the underlying OS (usually DOS, but in an OS/2
environment, OS/2).

I just upgraded my Mandrake 7.2 distro to kernel 2.4.2. Everything appears
to be fine except on login or su I get line that says:
bash: /usr/bin/tty: cannot execute binary file
I looked at the file, it is there, but it looks terrible like it is corrupt.
Can anyone clarify this error? How can i get a new tty script. Not even sure
what it does. No noticable functionality problems.

Actually, OS/2 can run any real-mode x86 operating system in a
virtual machine. I have an OS/2 machine with DR-DOS, MS-DOS
v2.11, MS-DOS v3.1 and MS-DOS v6.2 running is spearate virtual
machines. This does carry a peformance penalty, however, and by
default OS/2 will use it's emulated DOS environment to run DOS
programs.
IIRC, linux' DOSEMU environment similarly provides a virtual
real-mode x86 machine for a DOS operating system. VMware does a
similar thing in providing a protected-mode 80x86 virtual
environment.

I did that when I got home to my own 2.4.2 box, and it (eth0:1) worked
just fine. Unforch, I'd wiped bru for some reason, and don't have a
copy here to try. Note that this is NOT the same bru-pe you can
download, the x interface at least is slightly different. About a
version earlier I think.

Thats a question it will take more astute people to answer. Do we have
a sniffer that would show that data?
I'd also like to know how to make it use a compressor like bzip2,
changing tapes for the last 100 megs on my work machine is a pita.
Then, from the looks of it, the second tape didn't take, it errored out
without verifying the backup. By then it was go home time and I didn't
feel like restarting it on the second TR4 tape. Bummer.

Duh! 8-{ And I bit which is even more embarrassing. Of course you are
correct. I simply didn't do the math.
Now, please note that this is not impossible to do with some video
chips! The one on this card for instance can be diddled a line at a
time for vertical, and I think 1 pixel at a time horizontally, As can
the sync and blanking timeings, we have tool software that can do this
on the fly here, but not without the occasional clash between the chip
and what the driver is telling it to do. But if the screen upchucks,
just hit the escape key and the previous mode is restored. :-)
Its an old CL-5226, on a Picasso-IIa in this amiga.
But *most* of the modelines are built so the divisors and results are
integer, and the pixel is square, with emphasis on square pixels
usually. This puts a bit more of an artistic constraint on what some
people consider to be a usable modeline.
