The key is in the numbering of the S... and K... scripts of /etc/rc.d.
They're executed in numerical order! So just make sure your script to
unmount the Samba partitions has a lower number than the K??network
script, probably in rc3.d. For example, if the network shutdown is
K30network, make the Samba dismount K25Samba (or whatever).

Seems there must be something I should do to syslog.conf . But I cant figure out the
correct syntax.
I have:
kern.* /var/log/kern
*.info;.... /var/log/messages
I would think these messages are kernel msgs or something.
thanks

The phenomenon of UFO doesn't say anything about
the presence of intelligence in space.
It just shows how rare it is here on the earth.

Hello everybody,
I try to connect a CDROM tower to the SCSI connector of my Linux box
(Redhat 7.0).
The 6 CDs are correctly identified by the Adaptec bios.
The SCSI card is AHA2940 and I try to use the driver aic7xxx.o
Running 'insmod aic7xxx.o', the SCSI adapter is found, then Linux tries
to identify the different CDs connected to the bus.
Then I enter an infinite loop with the following error message:
(scsi1:-1:-1:-1) Referenced SCB 1 not valid during SELTO.
SCSISEQ = 0x5& SEQADDR = 0x8 SSTAT0 = 0x10 SSTAT1 = 0x8a
Then I cannot stop the 'insmod aic7xxx.o' command, nor kill the
corresponding process.
I would appreciate any kind of suggestion.
Thanks in advance

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 06:38:18 GMT
Hi
I originally posted this on linux.dev.laptop but didn't get any response as
this doesn't seem to be used much.
I am looking to setup RHL 7 (or any compatible Linux revision!) on a Toshiba
Portege 320CT (small 'sub-notebook' about three years old). This system's
screen is of 'cinematic' proportions - ie 1024x600 pixels instead of the
usual 768.
Has anyone out there had any experience installing to one of these laptop
systems?
I would like to know if this resolution is supported in any x-windows
environment before I commence trying to install it.
Perhaps you could direct me to a suitable URL or usenet group where I could
search for some supporting drivers. A cursory glance at Toshiba USA has not
yielded anything but I haven't given up yet!
Thanks in anticipation
John

I have Debian GNU/Linux 2.2. My video adaptor is an integrated Cirrus Logic
CL-GD542X VGA BIOS Version 1.41 (VESA local bus). I try to start X with
16bpp, and it says that the linear and membase options must be specified in
the config file, but I don't know what the linear address of the frame buffer
is.

The setup program I use is XF86Setup. But I still had to make some adjustments
to the config file to adjust the screen resolutions and colors. It didn't
help, though. The only mode it would use was 800x600 256 color.
> No X11, no images.
That's ridiculous! Any program should be able to do graphics without X11.
You don't need Windows to run DOS PM games with 3D hi-res hi-colour graphics;
why should Linux be any different? I probably wouldn't want to use X even if
I could. I'll just stay with DOS to do my graphics stuff.

MY HOST FILE HAS ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE THIS:
"

192.168.1.9 Emachine
"
THE SAME APPLIES TO MY SYSCONFIG FILE:
"
NETWORKING=yes
FORWWARD_IPV4=false
HOSTNAME=Emachine
DOMAINNAME=www.erix.com
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
GATEWAYDEV=eth0

I do intend for my hostname to be "Emachine," as cheesy and unoriginal as
that is. Anyway, now that you have seen my configuration, do you still
think that what you suggested is my problem? My configurations seem to
accord with what you have specified, no? If I have misunderstood, please
correct me. Perhaps the problem is with my domain. I am not even positive
that I need one for either Windows or Linux. I made one up a long time ago
as part of a troubleshooting strategy, and Windows seemed/seems to like it,
so I have kept it. But it has no other significance to me. Also, I am not
sure why the loopback address is iterated at the "localhost.localdomain." I
guess that shouldn't be a problem, though. Thoughts, anyone? Bueller?

Subject: Which ethernet speed is up?
Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 07:38:44 GMT
Does anyone know how you can tell at which speed your ethernet link is
connected? (10, 100, 1000?)
On Solaris dmesg will say 10 Megabit link up, or 100 Megabit link up.
Windows 2000 has that cute little icon in the system tray that you can let
your cursor drift over and it will tell you... ;)
I have not found anything in dmesg, /var/log or /proc to help me in this
regard.
I think the dmesg or /var/log/messages is unhelpful in this regard. In my
opinion that merely tells you which hardware was discovered by the module
and what is its highest rated capacity, not what is the speed of the current
link. See examples below.
My colleagues point to the fact that in dmesg it will say things like
"100baseTx" or "Intel PCI EtherExpress Pro 100", but I think this is merely
an equipment label, not a statement about the ethernet "link" which was
negotiated with the hub or switch at the other end of the wire. I note that
the 100baseTx statements in dmesg will not vary even if the wire is
disconnected or is connected to a 10 megabit hub.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Change the /etc/hosts to:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.9 Emachine Emachine.localdomain
Sendmail is loking into /etc/hosts for the name Emachine and to see if
it can find another name with a dot in it on the same line. Not finding
any it will wait very patiently for DNS to give the real FQDN host name.

But try to repost your question (or read the articles) to

OK, one by one.
The /boot partition can be as small as possible, I usually set it 1 cylinder,
and the size of disk decides how big it is.
On my 8.4G disk it is little more than 8M. As it holds very few unchanging
files and the kernel/s it is almost empty.
Most kernels are in the range 600-900K to fit on a booting floppy WITH some
helping utilities. Think about it.
Linux is supposed to make us think, more so than the other OS. (No names).

Looked again on what 'fdisk /dev/hda'<enter> - p<enter>' displayed. My
extended partition (NOT the Linux one) has it's type as 5 which has NO
master. The type 'f' belongs to Extended Windows95 FAT32 - whatever that
means.
It MAYBE the source of the difficulty, I realy don't know.

by default, packet filter (ipchains) messages get logged to the
/var/log/messages file (at least on RedHat7 they do.) They have timestamps
in the messages file. The packet log files are kernel.info messages.
On my system I added the following to /etc/syslog.conf. This causes the
packet log messages to go to their own file /var/log/fw/ipchains.log. There
are a very few miscellaneous network related messages that also go to the
ipchains.log file but not enough to be bothersome.
kern.=info
/var/log/fw/ipchains.log
I also changed another line in syslog.conf so that the packet log messages
would not be duplicated in /var/log/messages. This line now reads:
*.info;kern.!=info;mail.none;news.none;authpriv.none /var/log/messages
before I changed it it said:
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none /var/log/messages
Hope this helps.
