Having some trouble with an install.
I have a sharp picture, but I'm only seeing 1/4 of the full desktop.
If I move the mouse to the edge, I can move the screen around the desktop.
Suggestions?

Yep, I checked on lsmod and ifconfig and no ethernet device. I typed
ifconfig adapter
and it says device not found. Now, I did get eth0 in redhat, but I
did have to enable the device. Not quite sure what to do.

Check the file /etc/passwd. At the end of the line concerning the user
being refused by the ftp server there shoul be the shell used to login,
usually /bin/bash.
If there is NO shell selected the user can login from consoles but NOT
from remote (ftp is considered remote login even if used from the same
machine).
So, simply add "/bin/bash" at the end of the line, and it will work

Did anyone else experience problems with anaconda while installing?
Installation failed several times with the graphical installation. A window
popped out saying that it is probably a bug and that I should e-mail it to
bugzilla. The only way I managed to install was in text mode.
I am trying to configure the modem now, with either linuxconf, or netcfg. In
both of them the ppp stuff is missing. Is this another bug, or am I missing
some packages? E.g. in netcfg, when clicking on "Interfaces" -> Add, it
shows slip, plip, ethernet, etc, but no ppp. How do I add a ppp interface
then? I did an rpm -V on ppp, netcfg, linuxconf, and they were just fine.
Could someone please open a netcfg and check if ppp is there? If so what am
I missing? Incidentally, I did configure the modem, (I/O, irq), and I can
dial out with minicom. I would hate to configure the ppp scripts by hand.
Thanks!

Subject: trouble compiling util-linux
Date: 28 Sep 2000 08:43:33 GMT
I'm having a problem trying to compile util-linux-2.10o under Debian 2.2
as described in the Loopback Encrypted Filesystem HOWTO. My initial
thoughts were that I needed -lcrypt because lomount.c had trouble compiling
since it was patched to recognize additional encryption algorithms. I
believe that lcrypt is part of libcrypt which comes packaged with libc6.
I have libc6 installed and therefore libcrypt is present. I then added
'/lib' in ld.so.conf to recognize where libcrypt is located and ran ldconfig.
All seemed fine but compiling util-linux again had the same errors. I can't
get my head around this problem. Help would be appreciated.
Below is the output from 'configure' and 'make':
=====output from configure======
You have inet_aton()
You have <scsi/scsi.h>
You don't have <linux/blkpg.h>
You don't need <linux/tqueue.h>
You have <linux/kd.h>
You have <term.h>
You have ncurses. Using <ncurses.h>.
You have termcap
You need -lcrypt
You have <locale.h>
You have <libintl.h> and gettext()
Assuming that you want to enable NLS support.
(Otherwise, edit defines.h and remove the line with ENABLE_NLS)
You have <langinfo.h>
You have __progname
You have <pty.h> and openpty()
You don't have wide character support
You have nanosleep()
You have personality()

Here are the things I have and have checked
Files:
/etc/passwd (has non root user "me", group is also "me"
/etc/shadow (generated by pwconv)
/etc/group (defined group id "me")
/etc/inetd.conf
/etc/ftpaccess

/usr/sbin/in.ftpd (wu-2.5.0(1))
/usr/sbin/identd
/var/log/messages (says: ftpd[13]: cmd failure, etc.)
/var/log/secure
Someone suggested look at /dev/tty, well, it's crw--rw--rw-.
I suspect teh ftp client sends some thing to the server
which is misinterpreted by the sever as bad user

It is trivial to configure a connection with rp3-config (after reading the
PPP-HOWTO, as usual), and it does not require to set up an interface
explicitly.
However, not having ppp in the netcfg and linuxconf menus is probably a bug.

md5sum is a checksum. A checksum is a sum generated by some smart
mathematics done on a file. If the file changes in any way so does the
checksum. Like that you can see if the file image is as it is suppose
to be.
You need to do it before you burn the CD. Go to the directory where
you stored the image and do: (assuming file.iso is the name of the
image)
md5sum file.iso
Then wait a moment while the sum is calculated; takes a few minutes for
a 650MB CD image. This output a string like
3ff55b942500c8cbb876d4957f17590c file.iso
Where you found the file there are usually also a MD5SUMS file. In that
you will find a line like the above for each file. Now you simply
control the value they have with the value you just generated.
No match = problem.

I have a peculiar problem. I've just installed Red Hat 6.1, almost
everything went fine, except that i claims that it can not detect any
printer using 'printtool'.
I guess it's not an arugment to say that everything works fine using
Windows, but on the other hand my hardware have been bought to meet Linux's
demands.
Hardware:
Motherboard Aopen AX63 Pro,
Processor: PIII, 500 MHz
Printer: Lexmark Optra E310, Postscript.
I can't figure out whats wrong, is there some way to bypass 'printtool' and
setup up the printer by hand?
Having a computer and not being able to print anything is a little bit sad.

I have just successfully finished installing version 7.0, and according
to the instructions I now need to reboot and when the computer
restarts, lilo should come up and ask me which operating system I would
like to boot to.
Unfortunately for some reason, there is no lilo boot menu. It just
boots as always directly to Windows Me. Is anyone else experiencing
this problem or a similar problem with Windows Me? Is there any way to
fix this?

first edit /etc/lilo.conf to configure the lilo boot loader. Next,
run /sbin/lilo and then reboot the system. Watch it! :-)
