Subject: NIS Problems
Date: Fri, 02 Mar 2001 11:02:35 +1100

Greetings
I have setup NIS Client on my Redhat 7.0 2.2.16-22 Box it seems to work
fine until the point you want to login as nis user.

I have adjusted my /etc/hosts file to have an entry of
+username::::::/bin/ksh.

The machine can do an ypcat passwd and other things like that.

But when I login as my NIS user it goes back to the login prompt.

I check the /var/log/messages file and the error I get is the
following..

whatever --username[864]: LOGIN on BY username from TOP
whatever --username[865]: setuid () failed
whatever PAM _unix [864]: (system-auth) session closed for user username

I assume this means it can't handle my NIS UID which is above the 64,000
mark.

Can this be fixed by anyway ...

Does a kernel update help ?

I am trying to install software off of a free cd I received. It has
Netscape-6 on it. The README for it says to type "./netscape-installer" to
install it. I type that and I get
the following message: "Gtk-warning **: cannot open display: "
Some one suggested that I type in "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0" to correct
the problem. I did that and then type "./netscape-installer" and I received
the following message:

"Xlib: connection to 'localhost:0:0' refused by server
Xlib: INVALID-MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-key

Gtk-warning **: cannot open display: "

So I guess that didn't work. I am pretty sure that I have X running. Just
to be sure, I entered "startx", and I got:

"Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this display is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full
server output, not just the last messages
Xlib: connection to 'localhost:0:0' refused by server
Xlib: INVALID-MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-key
giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error."

I am logged in as root, using bash, Red Hat 6.0. Could someone offer some
first aid, or point me in a direction as to how to install software like
this to RedHat?

i use bootmagic to boot linux and win98 (for my mum)
it's a good tool, i think the only difference with lilo is the graphical

I have a java app which calls httpd. Both httpd and my java app are on
the same box, but I address the server with its name, i.e.
http://www.nowhere.com:8080/my.jsp. I can see that "my.jsp" has
finished, by its having written to a log, but may java app, which is
acting as the client, does not get a response for as long as 14 minutes.

What could create the delay? I can ping in 0.1ms, but this http
response...

Hello,

check /var/log/mail, the first place to look, if you have problems with
your mail.

If those messages don't help you along, try google, ask in
comp.mail.sendmail
don't forget to post those log messages.

Good luck

sounds as if you have mucked it up, read

man klogd

and copy the System.map file that belongs to your kernel to /boot/System.map.

You might be stuck here. I just did a bit of digging around in the kernel and
it looks like the uid_t type is defined to be a __uid_t. When you start
seeing the "__" who start thinking it is embedded in one of the system
libraries. I had a quick look through the kernel code as well and it would
appear that it plays it safe by defining everything in terms of uid_t which
means that for a change to take place it would have to be done in a system
library. I am thinking that the chances of success to try and get a UID over
64,000 are very slim.

However, others may have found a way around it.

See ya

Your name lookup is most likely timing out on one DNS server, then going
to the next. The lag is the timeout. You can verify this by using your
numeric/dotted-decimal ip address in place of "www.nowhere.com"...if
dotted-decimal form is fast, then it is your DNS source, whereby the
first one does not know the answer and takes its time getting to the
second source (and then maybe the third). A place to look is
/etc/resolv.conf, and /etc/host.conf. Be sure your /etc/hosts file is
searched first before DNS, and that DNS servers are listed correctly.
That way if "www.nowhere.com" is listed in /etc/hosts, it'll be found
instantly.

Sounds like maybe X is trying to start up in a mode that your monitor
can't handle. When this wierdness happens, try hitting CTRL-ALT-F1
to see if it gives you a legible text screen back. If so, that's
what's happening.

If you can get a legible login screen, log in and see what the
"initdefault" entry of /etc/inittab says. If it's got a "5" in
it, that's where you're going astray. Edit that entry and change
it back to "3", and your system should boot up in text mode once again.
That'll let you get in and edit your XF86Config file to get rid of
the bad X modes.

Hope this helps.

Just out of interest, all the domain name server configurations have been
setup. It isn't possible that the delay is caused by "httpd" not knowing
where to go to get a domain name lookup. You might also want to turn off
"reverse domain name lookups" which are used when logging activities to the
log file (if it isn't already turned off).

My host.conf looks like this:
   order host,bind
   multi on

My resolv.conf, like this:
   domain nowhere.com
   nameserver 172.16.0.240
   nameserver 172.16.0.241
   search nowhere.com nowhere.net

and a nslookup returns (very quickly):
   # nslookup europa.nowhere.com
   Server: ns1.nowhere.com
   Address: 172.16.0.240

   Non-authoritative answer:
   Name: europa.nowhere.com
   Address: 172.16.0.42

Anything look wrong...

No, that doesn't work, either.

I am pretty much satisfied that the problems are something to do with
accessing my SCSI disk drives. If I leave the SCSI bios configured the way I
use it in Win98 and BeOS, it gives repeated timeouts. That configuration is
to allow wide sync negotiation on every scsi id except 6, which is a scsi-2
cdrom drive.

I have tried several combinations of wide sync negotiation on or off on
several ID's (0, 7, and 15). 0 is a 9.1 GB UltraWide SCSI drive that I want
to install Linux on. 7 is (I think) the id of the scsi adapter, itself. 15
is the id of a 4.3 GB UltraWide SCSI drive that is my C: drive with Win98SE
installed on it.

One combination caused id 0 to be accessed at 40 mb/sec, but gave repeated
parity errors. Another combination made id 0 sync at 20 mb/sec and gave some
other error, repeatedly. Yet another combination immediately caused very
rapid error messages. However, nothing I tried actually worked.

I give up. This Linux won't install on an otherwise perfectly serviceable
hardware configuration. None of my components are "oddball" and all are
listed as supported in Suse's hardware database.

Duh. That's also where /etc/inittab is...and you don't get very far
without that.
