Wouldn't you want ascii mode if it's just a perl script??

Well, I *can* boot into 2.2.16-22 with no problems, and use the RAID
card, but there are features I want from 2.4.2, hence my desire to
update the kernel in the first place.
As for why I'm still stuck, I don't know how to compile an
individual module for the new kernel. Keep in mind that all that is
out there for this RAID card is a "Device driver disk" supplied by
Promise that is meant to be used *only* during the initial install of
RH 6.2 or 7.0. I don't even think the source code was supplied, just
the object file. That said, what can I do with this "ft.o" file to
make it work under 2.4.2?
I've only been at this whole linux thing a little over a week,
so I think I'm doing okay. I think my difficulties are arising
because Promise has provided a closed-source module specifically meant
for 2.2.16-22, and neither of my two books "Running Linux" and "RH
Linux 7.0 Unleashed" covers compiling individual modules for use with
an arbitrary kernel, or at least not that I've found yet...

I was forced to reinstall Win98SE on top of itself
on my dual boot system recently. Win98SE very nicely
rewrote the boot record, forcing my to use a floppy
to boot Linux Mandrake 7.1.
The solution to reinstalling the dual boot capability
was to find a text file in the /boot/grub directory
and to give the lines in the text file to grub.

hi there,
Is there anyone out there who is able to setup the Iport pcmcia network card
sold by Compusa ? It's a 10BaseT model.
I could use it in Win98, but Linux (caldera 2.2) seems not able to detect
it.
Thanks in advance.

Some SB16s are value cards and do not have bass/treble controls AFAIK.
My does not work at least; there must be 20 different SB16 models, all
different in options.

Take a look at 'man open' (if you have it installed). You might also need
'chvt' to switch vt after opening that one. Just don't mess up the gettys
for your vts.

All,
I recently installed RH7 on the same disk as my Windows partition. Windows is the
first
partition on the disk. Linux is the second. Lilo is installed on the MBR. Booting
into
Linux is no problem but everytime I boot into Windows, Windows wedges solid during
the "clouds startup screen". Then I have to reboot but rebooting sends me into "safe
mode"
and disk scan. A second reboot succeeds.
I can't keep doing this though. So any ideas on why this is happening and what I can
do to correct this problem. I'm quite sure this is not a "Windows" problem but rather
I think it's a partition problem of some kind. Cylinder alignment perhaps? I really
don't know.

Try switchdesk - gives you lots of options - gnome, kde, fvwm, enlightenment,
windowmaker,
and twm.
$ which switchdesk
/usr/bin/switchdesk
I've only used it a couple of times, as I stick to KDE mostly, but it seems to
work.

Hi there,
I'm fairly new at this Linux stuff and am after some advice.
I have a small network setup that uses my Linux box as the net gateway
and file server and am considering making it a mail server as well.
I have some (limited) experience with Exchange and would like to get
the Linux box to do something similar.
I have several 2K machines networked to it and will be reading the
mail on those (atleast at the moment) so want the Linux box to get,
store and pass on the mail.
Everything is currently working fine with the 2K box's connecting
directly to the ISP through the Linux box, so I guess I am looking for
some comments as to whether you all think its worth doing or not.
If it is worth the effort, can I setup sendmail, fetchmail and imap to
do what I want to do??
Thanks

Rsync is very good at this. It will work for the online disk too, but will
save an enormous amount of time maintaining the offsite mirror since
it will only transmit the changes and can compress on the fly. It
should already be on your RH distribution but you might want to check
to be sure it is the latest available version.

Mine is in /usr/bin/suidperl and it works as long as you untaint what you
need to. If you don't find it there, you either need a package that
includes it or can compile Perl from source to include it.

Why try to fix it, if it ain't broken?
It is not all that difficult to accomplish though. But it will take some
time, some reading, and possibly some tinkering to get everything
working as you want it. I think sendmail and IMAP on linux (or *BSD) is
quite a lot more stable then exchange, and can generally handle a lot
more mail. But if you use, and are dependant on, exchange's central
addressbook, its advanced scheduling, or joined agenda's, or whatever
they're called, then a linux based solution may not exactly be what you
look for.
But, exchange is for from cheap, with those license costs for each
client. Sendmail, or qmail, or postfix for that matter, is free.
Independant of the number of users. Most linux distributions have
precompiled packages for those MTA's and it will most likely be a
question of simply installing that package, follow the instructions (as
to what domainname to use and such) and you're up and rolling. Create
accounts for all users, possibly configure fetchmail to retrieve mail
from other mailboxes and deliver it to the one on the local mail-server.
IMAP also comes in a simply to install package.
IMHO IMAP is prefered to POP as that will allow users to store mail on
the server, and access those stored messages not only from their own
workstation, but from any computer that can connect to the mailserver.
Second having the mail stored on a single server allows for easier, and
more consistent back-ups as well.

I also like to upgrade / switch versions of Linux, that is the reason

I have always installed linux to "/"
I understand that this is not the best way especially if changing

What would be some partitioning scenarios that would allow me to keep

For commerical, partition magic.
Backup your data before using the above software, just in case.

I just setup Redhat 7.0 on an ancient machine (AMD 400) I found in my
closet. I installed Linux on /dev/hdb, i.e. Primary Slave hard drive.
There is no primary master, there is something wrong with my motherboard,
and I can only slave drives work (Primary slave is my HD, Secondary slave is
my CD-ROM).
The system boots fine from floppy, but when I try to boot from the HD, LILO
hangs on the letter "L". When I ran /sbin/lilo, I got a message saying:
"Warning: /dev/hdb is not on the first disk". I know the HD can boot from
primary slave, since I used to have Windoze 98 on the PC.
Is there any way to get this to work? I've tried disabling all boot devices
in my BIOS, and also disabled Virus protection in BIOS.
My lilo.conf reads:
boot=/dev/hdb
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16.mine

root=/dev/hdb1
If you've read this far, thanks!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
