Subject: can't boot kernel 2.4.2 on rh7
Date: 4 Mar 2001 21:10:36 GMT
Hi all,
a few days ago, i tried to test the 2.4.2 kernel with iptables in my dsl-
router.
My original-Kernel ist 2.2.17-14 on a Redhat 7 sytem with all patches (gcc-
2.96-69), devfsd-2.4.1, mkinitrd-3.0, modutils-2.4.2, util-linux-2.10s (all
from rawhide)
root is safely on /dev/hda1 1,5 GB ext2.
I downloaded the PLD-Kernel sources i found on rpmfind.net. (It was the
most recent kernel-srpm).
Where taking a look an the spec file, i found out that the kernel has the
latest netfilter patches and a freeswan patch.
The rpm compiled without any errors but after installing the kernel my
system locks with a kernel panic:
unable to mount root on 00:01 .
hmm... i tried
It looks fine and i began compilig (make menuconfig, make dep, clean
bzImage..). Everything looks fine.
but after typing a -lilo-command and rebooting i got the same error.
Now i tried the SGI-XFS-PRE-2.4.0 Kernel available from ther linux-site and
now: It booted my system.
The devfsd support in the kernel configuration was set to y:
CONFIG_DEVFS_FS=y
CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT=y
# CONFIG_DEVFS_DEBUG is not set
# CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS is not set
Is there a compiler problem?
Or did I forget anything?
With best regards
P.S.: No I try to rebuild the kernel from the patched source on another
system (rh 6.2 with patches and egcs). If that fails i will compile the
"clean" source.

Subject: X config question
Date: 04 Mar 2001 21:22:10 GMT
I installed RedHat Linux 7 on an AMD Duron 650 MHz box w/64M RAM, 4G HD
and a SiS 6326 AGP graphics card with 8M of video memory, BIOS v. 1.25.
It boots up fine into the bash, but if I issue the "startx" command, I
cannot get X windows to start. It says the following:
---
dbe: Unknown error loading module
Config Error: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config:48
SubSection "extmod"
^^^^^^^^^^
Module section keyword expected
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
---
Anyone know what this means?
Thank you!!

thanks, it booted after i used 'loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8
but then my ehernet doesnt seem to be working.
network start reveals that it cannot start interface eth0.
could it be because i did a restart from windows (shutdown-> restart in dos
mode) and the network drivers were still active?
thanks again,
ramesh.

Hi Folks,
Here's the setup:
Microtek X6 USB scanner
kernel 2.4.2 (w/ USB stuff, generic SCSI support,
and Microtek X6 USB driver compiled in)
So usbview picks up the usb hub and identifies the device as microtek blah
blah blah leading me to believe that the problem is on the driver end.
Reading TFM would seem to suggest that this particular scanner masquerades
as a generic SCSI device (sg0 since I don't have sga). I tried pointing
/dev/scanner at these but no luck (find-scanner doesn't pick it up). I've
also tried xsane and friends but no luck. I've got an IDE cd burner which I
figure might be messing up the generic SCSI stuff so I tried linking
/dev/scanner to sg1 but no luck. I also tried scd1 (scd0 is occupied by the
burner).
I'm running out of ideas. Has anyone w/ a similar setup got this going?
TIA :)

All parts of the LILO boot environment must be accessible via BIOS calls.
This means:
1. the first stage loader (boot=/dev/hda)
2. the second stage loader (install=/boot/boot.b)
3. the kernel image (image=/boot/vmlinuzXXX)
4. the initrd file (initrd=/boot/initrdXXX)
The question in this configuration is: does /dev/hde have bios support? And
will the default boot (/dev/hda) boot loader find it. Also, is the partition
set active?
I doubt that /dev/hde is BIOS device 0x80 !!!

you are not alone, my system also does this. I have no idea what this
means, only that it does not seem to have stoped me burning without
issue.
In my case the drive is a ancient matsushta 7502, it does the odd
frizbie, which is far far less than windoze used to do on this drive.
which version of crecord are you using?
did you build from source?
Which distribution are you running?
Whats else is on the SCSI bus?

The reason why I care, is because if the person who wrote the programs also

Hmm...I would guess since they are the ones who published the information, I
would guess that one would have to ask them which kernel its for...Since
they posted it as rh7 and not by kernel, I would assume (and again this
probably the wrong thing to do, but none the less the only information they
give you) that they mean the kernel packaged with rh7...reasonable line of
thought? I think so.

Its pretty clear, that is the name of the file...the contents are the same,
they aren't generated by compiling code or running a makefile....its the
name of the file supplied on the disk.

Ahh but they were made, you weren't paying attention, they compiled
generating errors..as I said I was concerned about their code, but I thought
give it a shot...And you know what? It didn't break anything, but it didn't
work either.

banging my head for the last three days for just about nuttin...All machines
working great now after I replaced the FA311 card with the tulip, the FA311
works great in the win machine so ..... argh, duh boink...
Anyway thanx for the entertainment...I feel much better about myself

Thanks for your help...It got me much farther along, but unfortunately
didn't work...I ended up remember I had a tulip card in a Win98 machine for
my wife...Well I banged my head for my stupidity at banging my head for 3
days, and now everything works great after the card swap...
Again thank you for the attempt at the help... It appears I was clear enough
to you but not to others. You helps was much more than I got from some other

If you want something thats at least X aware, Spruce is pretty good.
And you can set it up for more than one mail server. My only bitch
is the editor, it doesn't work like cygnused, and I'm a spoilt 66 year
old brat about editors. Other than that, I use it on a couple of the
machines under my jurisdiction with no problems.
Eudora has not been ported to linux that I know of.

Subject: Thirteen Months - Linux still not working
Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2001 21:42:19 GMT
Thirteen months ago I tried to set up a linux box, just
something really simple, one of the most -sold monitors, one of the
most-sold video cards, one of the most-sold sound cards, idem for
modem, mouse, and cdrom, a keyboard that supports deadkeys. Hundreds
of hours of reading through cryptic man pages, recompiling my kernel,
downloading updates and patches, and I STILL HAVE NOT GOT A WORKING
SYSTEM!!
Someone even offered help, I sent him my system files, and (I
suppose it was him) hacked into my computer, destroying a load of
files in my microsoft partitions. I have never been hacked in 5 years
under windows, it was quite a traumatic experience. But I have a
simple backup program under windows, so nothing was lost.
I have installed slackware 7.0, 3.2, 4.0
redhat 4.1, 5.2, 6.2, 7.0
mandrake 7.00, 7.02
suse 6.3
peanut linux
corel 1 and 1.1
Every one worked with some of my hardware, but none with all.
I have now installed redhat 7.00
What works:
mouse (microsoft serial)
hard disk (quantum 10Gb)
soundblaster 64
printer (Epson dot matrix)
does NOT work
video card (voodoo3dfx w/16Mb mem)
modem (USR 2977 PCI NOT winmodem (dials, negotiates, sets up ppp but
no internet connection)
Frankly , although I have a reasonably inquisitive mind, I'm
tired of reading man pages, HOWTOS, and trying things that do not
work.
So is anyone here willing to help me set up my box ? I'm just
asking for something that win98 did in 20 minutes flat ... set up my
OS and recognize my hardware. If anyone here thinks an OS that cannot
do this is going to be anything more than a passing trend needs his
head examined
Obs ... maybe I'll even post under linux and change my name if it
works ;)
