The IPCP (IP Control Protocol) component of the PPP protocol suite manages (amongst
other things) IP address allocation for point to point links.

The BIOS assigns the resources to the pnp cards. Boot Win98, right click on My
Computer -> Device Manager and see the I/O and IRQ of your modems.

Back in Linux, you need to tell the system what resources it should use when
trying to talk to the modem. Suppose you know your modem must use IRQ 11, then
you do

setserial /dev/modem irq 11

(Of course, /dev/modem must be a link to the actual /dev/ttyS? for your
modem).

Then things like isapnp will work. You automatize the whole thing by including
the setserial command in a boot script.

I guess you could enter setup (at boot) and tell the BIOS that you have an
operating system which assigns resources to pnp devices, and then set these
resources yourself with setpnp, but I've never tried that. If I'm not
mistaken, kernels 2.2.x can recognize and assign resources to pnp cards. You
might have to recompile the kernel for that. The first thing seems the easiest
to do.

I have the downloaded version of corel Linux second edition and all is good
except my SB Live. if I look in the control panel it lists a sound device as
SB Live 128 but no sound.
I tried to run sndconfig but it states no pci sound card installed. anyone
that can give me a push in the right direction would have my deepest thanks

At the LILO: prompt, type "linux x86_serial_nr=1". This boots with
the kernel listed in the "linux" section of lilo.conf but passes the
"x86_serial_nr=1" as an option to the kernel.

This is what allowed me to boot RedHat 6.2. After booting, recompile
the kernel and select different cpu optimization parameters and it
should be fine.

For what it's worth, I tried Mandrake 7.1 later on and it had no
problem.

If you installed KDE there should be a DrakConfig icon of some sort that
should be able to configure your sound. Otherwise from the console use
sndconfig (see 'man sndconfig').

As far as the modem, it depends what type it is. ISA hard jumpered to a
standard serial port or external modem is easy. A PnP modem may require
'pnpdump > /etc.isapnp.conf' and then edit that for port and irq. I don't
know about PCI modems, but maybe 'lspci' will give a clue where it is.
For any non-standard port or irq you may need to use 'setserial' to tell
Linux where it is. You can either make /etc/rc.d/rc.serial script for
that or add it to /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

Then you can use linuxconf to set up a ppp connection using PAP and see if
that works when you do 'ifup ppp0' (ifdown ppp0 to stop it). Or there are
various connection tools in X depending upon which window manager you are
using (Kppp or Gnome Dialer Configuration).

See 'man resolver' to see what you might need to plug into
/etc/resolv.conf.

Subject: PPP and routing.
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 05:55:51 GMT

I just installed debian after using Red Hat for 3 years - the only
problem is that the ISP I've been with for over a year I can no longer
connect to. I used to hate it when people asked nebulous questions on
usenet, so I've come armed with as much information as I can. :) I
just can't figure out how to go forward.

I think it is a problem with the routing. What happens is that the modem
dials and connects, pppd comes up, authenticates me (via PAP) with the
remote server, and gets an IP address. After that, I can ping myself,
my gateway, and my netmask. All hostname lookups are failures, as well
as pinging the nameservers of my ISP. When I configured debian, it
brings up a eth0 interface at boot even though it isn't connected to
anything. I tried this both with and without, with the same results, so
I don't think eth0 is interfering any.

If anyone has expertise in the area of routing and can clue me in on
what's going on with this, I would really appreciate it. Yes, I am
using the 'defaultroute' option in my /etc/ppp/peers/myisp file for
pppd. Here's a session of what I'm talking about with routing
information. I read the PPP-howto which had a section on routing, it
seems like the problem is that I don't have a route labeled default
attached to ppp0, but I don't know how to get this.

Here's the log - any suggestions or pointers would be greatly
appreciated.

I always thought Pentium class machines would only do a cold boot, since
even Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows does that. But it must be possible because
"shutdown -r now" in FreeBSD 4.0 does a worm boot. But it may be hardware
dependent and maybe some boxes still only do a cold boot.

Try using another tool. When I want to print text I use enscript which has
a whole bunch of other uses as well. It formats text quite nicely. Your
probably is described as stairstepping. I don't have that particular
problem with debian since I found the enscript app. When I send a job now,
I just type "enscript nameofthefile.txt".

You can set up most things like mutt to use enscript as well when printing
clear text email messages, etc.
