Subject: Whatever happened to ipmasqadm module?
Date: 6 Mar 2001 01:18:28 GMT

Hi everyone,

I am running RedHat 7.0 with the new kernel 2.4.2. This is
box is being used to connect an entire small network to the
Internet. Everything is working great (NAT, Firewall, mail,
etc...) except one thing. Since I am running the new kernel
2.4.2, I am using iptable (netfilter) instead of ipchains in
version 2.2.

I have a web server which is seating in a DMZ (the linux
box has 3 interfaces, one for Internal 172.16.1.0/24, one for
external 199.0.216.222/30, and the other one for DMZ
192.168.1.1/24) behind the firewall (linux) that needs to
accessible by users on the Internet. When I was running
kernel 2.2.18, I use the module ipmasqadm to forward web
traffic that hit the firewall to the web server in the DMZ.
Now that I am running kernel 2.4.2, I no lonoger see the
module ipmasqadm in the /sbin/ directory. Whatever
happened to this module? Furthermore, the linux firewall
is no longer delivering web traffic to the web server in the
DMZ. I would like to have this problem resolved. At
worst, I have to downgrade the kernel to 2.2.18 but I really
the new kernel 2.4.2. Is ipmasqadm is now part of the
new kernel 2.4.2? If it is, what is the command to put
it in my rc.firewall script? Please help.

Many thanks.

Subject: Linux & HP "windows" Printer
Date: Mon, 05 Mar 2001 21:29:19 -0800

I have installed RedHat Linux 6.2 and finally have it
working OK. My problem is that I have a HP
inkjet printer for Windows,Mod 820Cxi,which
works fine in windows. It will not work in Linux
which is what the books I have indicate.
To be sure I have no problems with my Linux
setup I borrowed a regular HP printer,Mod 970,
and it works fine, which tells me the books are
correct.
My question is, has some one found a work aroung
for a windows HP printer using Linux short of buying
a new printer?
Thanks,
Nelson

Thats why linux (and any other true multi user OS'es) makes the
distinction between the system administrator and users. Root is supposed
to install software, configure it, and set things up so that users can
simply use it. Root configures dial on demand, and subsequently any user
automagically goes online when he or she wants to read their mail or
browse the web, and has no need to know anything about DNS, ppp, type of
modem, the name of the ISP, IRQ's, interupts or whatever. And what is
even better, they can't even change those settings, so the fact that
users run every mail attachment they get, can't destroy the system.

Now that you've taken the role of root, you also taken a certain amount
of responsibility. You have taken control, and that requires a certain
amount of extra knowledge, you need to know exactly what needs to be
done, and therefor you need to read manuals. Everything has its price.
Otherwise use windows, where you relinquish a lot of control over the
system for a certain increase in ease-of-use. For me the trade-off is
in favour of linux, but if you don't want to learn more to get things
done, the balance may tilt in the direction of windows. No harm done. In
the end a computer is a tool, and as long as it gets the job done, who
cares how you get it done.

Subject: vga + mono display?

(Apologies if this appears twice, the message had 'expired' on my server
:)

I am trying to get an MDA video adapter on my system working under Linux
alongside a 3dfx voodoo3 pci card. I'm not too concerned with X on the
mono screen, I'd just like to be able to map, say, console 2 to the mono
screen, while
running X on the colour screen.

The kernel (2.4.1) has been compiled with the dual-head option enabled,
and the kernel indeed detects it with messages such as
  mdacon: MDA adapter found
  Console:Reassigning consoles 13-16 to MDA-2
However I've not been able to actually put anything on the screen yet
(simply echoing a string to console 13 doesn't seem to do it :). One
thing I did notice is that the mda screen goes totally black when Linux
detects it (ie without the blinking cursor), so it could be a mode
issue? How does one access the mda device, is it listed under /dev?
I have tried the framebuffer utility set, but the problem seems to be at
a lower level than framebuffers.

any help would be much appreciated,
TIA,
Greg Trounson

When typing fdisk /mbr, M$-OS'es write their stuff into the MBR,

This gives the parameters the module takes. I could enable the

Is this like "I am trying to see how my computer works if I do not plug

out how it works first and then worrying about your users. Most users
using Windows get it already installed will all of the drivers installed

nowhere.

Also Most ISPs set themselves up specially to make sure Windows works,
going sofar as to give away software for the users to use to set up

I wanted to play a little with devfs, but came about some problems: The
scripts that came with Suse 7.1 seem to be outdated. Both
/etc/init.d/boot.devfs and the patch installed to
/usr/share/doc/packages/devfsd try to access to a file below /sbin/init.d
(which since 7.1 no more exists). Seems they simply shipped the script of an
older distribution without adaption...
Furthermore the patch for the boot script fails in 2 of 3 points.
    My question are:
    - Are there working patches for Suse 7.1 somewhere?
    - Will it work if simply to patch the boot script by myself as the patch
should, or is there a way to force patch to do its job and is it
       save?
    - Has someone of you experiences with devfs under Suse, he/she likes to
share? _I_ really would apprechiate to hear (actually read) such...

Look for the little knobs/buttons at the front/bottom of the monitor
(may be hidden behind a drop-off panel). Manipulate these for
brightness, contrast, horizontal placement, horizontal size, vertical
placement, vertical size, pincushion, and trapazoid.

Oh, you meant how do you configure a monitor for use in X.

Hmmm... It depends on the monitor.

What monitor do you have? What version of X do you have? What have you
done so far? What distribution do you use, and what tools come in that
distribution?

A little more information would be helpfull.

You don't need any patches. Just

   mount -t devfs none /dev

(and run for cover)

Possibly, but you don't care, since all you want to do is try it to see
what it's like.
