Edit /etc/network/interfaces and double-check / remove the `gateway' line.

Subject: Re: disabling the X screen saver
Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 16:53:47 -0400

Hi Damien,
As it turns out there are two different screen blankers for
X11 windows, (as well as a third for the text console). One
built into the XServer which is controlled using the xset command,
(check out "man xset") and a second blanker called xscreensaver which
is controlled using the "Control Center" application in Gnome.

The XServer blanker is the only blanker running when the xdm/gdm
login screen is up. The xscreensaver blanker is started after
logging into the machine. On my box (RH6.2) xscreensaver is smart
enough to turn off the XServer blanker and use the "Control Center"
settings, so there are no conflicts between the two blankers after
logging in.

To set the blanker for the xdm/gdm login screen add the
xset commands to the /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 file, this script
is executed every time the xdm/gdm login screen is displayed.
I have mine set to display a pattern instead of a blank screen
to avoid the same thing that is happening to your users.

To turn off the blanker add these two commands to the
bottom of /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0:

xset -dpms
xset s off

My /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 commands look like this:

# screen blanker setup commands for blank to pattern
# turn off EnergyStar Display Power Management System
xset -dpms
# set time to wait before blanking in sec.
xset s 900
# turn screen blanker on
xset s on
# set blanker to use pattern instead of blank screen
xset s noblank
# blank the screen right now (optional)
xset s activate

Hope this helps!

Subject: RedHat 7 install failed, need rescue help
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 13:59:02 -0700

Hi,

I tried installing Redhat 7 on my Dell Inspiron 7500 intel laptop,
previously running Redhat 6.1.
The install failed just after disk druid partitioning and just before
copying the packages.
I tried to reuse the /home and /usr/local partitions.
The anaconda script died, and now the system will not boot to linux
since there is no system on the disk (it does still boot to windows).
Now I would like to copy a file (my mail) from my /home partition before
I reformat the disk completely and try to install Debian.

I can use a rescue disk to boot linux and then mount the /home =/dev/hda7 partition.
However the file is ~50 MB and will not fit on a single floppy.
Fortunately I have a superdisk drive (LS120 = 120 MB) which used
to be /dev/hdc = /mnt/ls120. I could copy the file onto the LS120
if I could mount the drive. Unfortunately

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/ls120

fails with a "not enough space" error.

Any ideas on how I mount the LS120 drive?
Is there a way to copy stuff on /hda7 directly to the windows partition?
I am unable to mount the windows partition from linux, same "not enough
space" error. Any7 help/ideas appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

Most likely, the files are on your system, but just not in a place where
fsv can find them. If so, you can put symbolic links to the files in
places where fsv looks for them. If you need help with that, let us know.

i was looking at the FAQ's for setting up redhat linux on the web, and seems
like it would be best to set up like 5 partition or something like that linux.
however, i am VERY new to linux, so should i still set up all these partitions?
or should i just set up /swap and /root partitions, and learn how those work...
then setup more partitions when i understand more bout linux? or should i just
make all of those partitions (/root swap usr etc) right from the beginning? i'm
afriad that it might be to hard to learn if i do all of those things at once.

Hi,

I'm new too, and I do it the easy way: a "/" and a swap. I do this because I
find it difficult to estimate the size needed foor the partitions.
If you have a great disc (>8Gb) it might be goot to create a "/boot"
partitition of some 23(??) Mb at the beginning of your disk, so you won't
have great problems using an older lilo.

The install guide for redhat suggests that you just put in a (large) root
partition mounted at / , a boot partition mounted at /boot, and a swap
partition. That's the way I have mine set up at the moment. It also
says that /boot should not be larger than 16M (what do you do if
a single cylinder is bigger than that?).

A point that confused me:  The swap partition is *not* called /swap;
in fact, you don't mount the swap partition at all. You just create
a partition of type "Linux swap" and that's all you have to do.

However I'm not sure you can do that with Disk Druid. There's
a thing that looks like a drop-down control for choosing the partition
type, but I couldn't get it to work. I had to go into fdisk
and change the type using the "t" option.

Don't go hog-wild on the swap partition. Linux can't use more than
127M (or is it 128?) of swap in a single partition, so if you make
it bigger than that you're just wasting disk. If you need more swap space,
you can create more than one swap partition, but I wouldn't do that
to start with.

i had some difficulty too inittially but after i re-installed 6.2 all worked
fine. when installing click on the configure X now button, and then the
installation will ask u a few more details like monitor resolution, do use the

can see it or not, and click yes or no. else it'll return u to the previous mode

hi,

if anyone knows of a solution I'd like to hear it.

I have (had) a dual boot (with lilo) redhat, win95 and thought I'd
finally upgrade to win98.

I stupidly forgot to make a bootdisk.

I thought I lost the original MBR, but when I scan the disk with NAV
2000 it says I have 2 MBRs.

Can I recover and edit the MBR from windows to restore the lilo
information?

If I'm screwed, I'll just do another clean install of redhat, but I'd
really like to know if there's any hope of recovery first.

any information would be great

Read the documentation about both 'rpm' and installing Mesa,
as you are not even sure about your success.

I guess your 'fsv' demands wrong versions. I installed both Mesa-3.2
(self compiled) and Mesa-3.2-2.i386.rpm on redhat 6.1.

Both packages contained libGl[U].so.1.2.x versions.
(I had to add the "libMesa.so" softlinks, btw.)
'libglut.so' comes with major number three, though.

For a 'short termed' workaround: add softlinks with the
required names to the actual files and rerun ld.config.

If that works, find out why 'fsv' wants another, apparently wrong
major(!) number.

You did a lot of unecessary crossposting but haven't set a followup-to!
'de.comp.os.unix.linux.newusers' is a german group and also invalid.
So i restricted the followup to comp.os.linux.misc.

Eeh - ssh and telnet are two different things. Both are ways to log in on
a remote host - but they do it in different manners. So telnet does not
use ssh or vice versa. In other words ssh is a telnet independent program.

What i guess, you want is a ssh client. You can find one on www.ssh.org
(or ftp.ssh.org). They both have clients for ssh1 and ssh2.
