I am not quite sure, but perhaps "make clean" removes the compiled images
too. Leave that step out, and look in the place Eric mentioned.

We have several Linux machines (node1 to 5) networked together, with one
(node1) also having access to an external network. When trying to remote
login from node1 to any of node2 to node5, using either rlogin or rsh,
there is often a considerable delay, of up to a couple of minutes.
However when using telnet, the connection is instantaneous.

Could anyone suggest what might be causing this ?

Secondly, how can I synchronise the clocks of several linux machines ?

Thanks

That's your problem, not the machines. If it is connected to the
internet via ppp, then it is connected. That's it.

> It is possible that my provider gave me an invalid DNS server

Quite possible, but so what? That's just a service and has nothing to
do with "connecting any program to the internet". It just converts
names to IP numbers. You can always use the IP numbers. If ping and
telnet to IP numbers work, then you are all set up. If not, you have
messed your routing table and/or hostname and/or your own IP address,
and you need to fix those. Please don't try and run before you can walk.

> there any public DNS servers I can try ?

Just search for your IPs DNS server on a lookup from elsewhere .. but
this is likely NOT your problem. First convince us that your ppp is
connected and functioning, and that your routing tables are A-OK, as is
your own hostname and IP address. Note that your own machine and IP
must be listed in /etc/hosts, at a bare minimum. Since you haven't
tried profusely to convince us that that's the way it is, and that you
know what you are doing, I suppose that it isn't that way and you
don't! So that's likely the problem area.

Then you've configured self-contradictory ones.
Deal with it by configuring feasible ones. Mind you, xfree 4 is
supposed to have a builtin list to select from, so you must have
messed up pretty thoroughly on other aspects of the config to
to be able to have disabled every single possible one! Perhaps
you selected a dotclock of 100Hz instead of 100MHz? !!

Thanks for your reply,
I was afraid of that. We have had some trouble with screen blanking using
anything higher than XFree86 3.3.5-3. I specifically have had trouble with
the version that comes with RedHat 6.2, and XFree86 4.0.1. I will give 4.0.2
a shot, but I am doubtful it won't blank also.

An explanation of the screen blanking problem-
Our software uses a motif DrawingAreaWidget as it's main window area.
Sometimes, when the mouse is clicked inside the drawing area, the screen
blanks temporarily. As soon as the mouse button is released, the screen
returns to normal. It doesn't occur with XFree86 3.3.5-3, so I'm sure it
isn't something to do with the software. I've posted questions about this on
the motif newsgroups, but I never got any response.

I'm open to ideas . . .

Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 08:44:01 -0500

I have installed Oracle 8.1.7 on Redhat 6.2 & 7.0. I have everything up and
running on both boxes, and I'm trying to automate startup and shutdown.

Startup is working fine - by placing a link to an init.d script in
/etc/rc3.d/S76oracle

The probelem is with shutdown. I have written a script which shuts down the
oracle db - is it called /etc/init.d/killoracle

The script is as follows:

echo -n "Stopping oracle: "
su - oracle -c "dbshut"

-when I execute this script from the shell (bash), logged in as root, the
database shuts down.

I then created the following symbolic links:

/etc/rc0.d/K11oracle
/etc/rc3.d/K11oracle
/etc/rc6.d/K11oracle

(inittab for both systems starts them in run level 3)

but when I issue "shutdown -r now" or "reboot" from the bash shell, the
database does not shutdown - the script is not executed.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

This is an excellent book (as with most of the O'Reilly series), and I
would highly recommend it for new users. Unlike many books written
with new users in mind, you will continue to find it a useful
reference for a long while after you've broken through the newbie
barrier.

Nope...You can't mount NTFS...

I have "heard" you can sometimes mount NTFS in a readonly mode by mounting
it as an HPFS partition...but I have never tried it....If you do try it I
would strongly suggest you ensure it is mounted readonly, you don't want to
end up trashing your drive.

fdisk /mbr does not "erase" the master boot record, it rewrites microsofts
boot loader into the MBR

This will not make your system Win98SE only....It will prevent Linux from
booting without a boot disk, but it will still reside on the hard drive and
you will not be able to use that space for your windows.

If you want to remove Linux from the PC completely, you must run Linux
Fdisk, and delete the type 82 and type 83 partitions.

Then use MS fdisk to repartition the new free space on the HDD. Then type
fdisk /mbr and you'll have your Win98SE machine back.

I am currently running rh5.2. I am trying to decide whether I should
upgrade to 6.2 or 7.0?? I know 7.0 is newer and has been out for a
number of months. My concern is that 7.0 was the first version in the
7.x series. My general rule of thumb is wait until the major bugs are
ironed out and rolled into a minor release (i.e. 7.1 or 7.xx). Yes, I
know the minor release has bugs.

Enough of my rambling. If it helps, whatever version I choose, the PC
running rh will be a server for 3-5 windows based (currently win98)
pcs. The server will eventually be connected to the the internet via a
cable modem and a 56k modem.

He paid $5 for a 386? He got ripped off....

Hehe, I am joking...

Any linux distribution should work, you should be able to do a "net"
install...

You need to have a computer that can browse the web and ftp sites, because
you need to download two utilities. bootnet.img and rawrite.exe

Alternatively I can e-mail or ICQ these to you if you like.

You still need to have an ftp or http site to download from during
installation, and the ftp/http installations can be kinda of a pain in the
neck. Sometimes they don't like to work right, and if you get disconnected
during installation its a real pain in the neck...Also unless you have a
broadband connection, I would suggest a net install, otherwise you phone
lines are going to be tied up for a few days.

This is probably something that varies with the CD burning software and
how the filename is recorded. For instance, it's possible to store a
"long" filename for an 8.3 name, just to get the case right. I don't
have any Windows CD-R software installed at the moment, but my hunch is
most of them would honor the "long" filename and preserve case for
those. For more Unix/Linux-like features, it might also be worth looking
into the Windows ports of mkisofs and/or mkhybrid. These are ports of
the Unix/Linux tools to Windows. I don't know offhand what they'll do
with raw 8.3 filenames, but they ought to at least not mess with the
case of anything that's stored with an extended FAT filename.

If so boot up linux and log into root

then type

shutdown -r now

and it should come back up into your dual boot if you haven't played with
lilo.conf

If not, you'll have to use your rescue disk (the RedHat Floppy and CD), and
when you are in the system, mount your harddrives manually...then type lilo.

It depends on how much of a beginner you are. If you're a COMPLETE
novice, something like a "visual quick-start" guide or a "Dummies" book
might be in order, although I've not read any from this class lately.
If you've got more general computer experience, one by Vicki Stanfield
and myself, _Linux System Administration_, might be worth looking into
(there are at least two or three entirely unrelated books with that
title, though); or Welsh & Kaufman's _Running Linux_ is well-liked (be
sure to get the 3rd edition). I've got links to several of these at

The problem you're going to have is that 4MB of ram. I've got an old Epson
laptop that I've been wanting to put Linux on, but almost every distro requires
8MB of ram minimum. Check out the 4MB Linux laptop HowTo at

Hi,

I have a problem installing PHP & MYSQL together. I have verified that
each works indepenently but when using a PHP script with a call to
mysql, I get the following error returned to the browser :

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in lib.inc.php3
on line 255

Does anybody know what the cause of this is???

Many thanks in advance.

Adrian
