Perhaps not, all people I know, who run Linux are prof. admins?
To be honest, if you want more from your box than the things your distro gives,
or something is not working as you want, there is no way than giving up and
boot this poor winbloze or become an admin to get things working.
Win luls you in some kind of knowledge, by clicking some buttons and booting all
day,
but do you really know about what's going on under the hood? Nope
With linux everything is explained, at least you can always do a grep on the

You probably mean "man resolv.conf".
Shouldn't be among your first steps with linux to understand BIND,
your provider should have DNS service for you, most distros have some
nice setup tools to tell your system the IP.

That's right, try wvdial with the params you get for windows, if that doesn't
work,
check with netcraft if your ISP uses Linux, if yes, write a polite mail to

See my above post, I have the same card, working with no problem (1280x1024).

Subject: Newbie: Problems with Linux 6.0 install
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 01:24:01 GMT
I successfully installed 6.0 on my desktop system but I'm having
trouble installing on my laptop. I've created a partition for Linux
and currently run Win 98 with 128mb of ram. Also, I have to manually
swap between using a cd and floppy drive but can't use both
simultaneously.
The Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed book indicates that I should be able to
install directly from the CD but I've tried all of the suggested
methods and can't get there from here.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

Well, OK-ish. localhost.localdomain is not a valid name, except in
redhats fevered imagination and you should change it to something
else pretty soon, but for the moment., OK.

Apparently it isn't. So it's just your DNS serverthat needs adding to

Eh? You set limits for horizontal and vertical frequencies and X then
chooses whatever it can within that area of the graph. None of this
"all modes" or "800x600 or higher" business. That's orthogonal.

I have installed Java SDK into my RH7, but right now, I want to uninstall
it. Does anyone know how to do it? I was not using RPM file manager, just
reguler binary file like this "j2sdk-1_3_0_02-linux.bin." Thanks!!

Recommend larger also if you have a CD-Burner - most of them (ie. cdrecord) like
to put the cd image file into /tmp. Yes, you can change this, but...

Looks perfectly OK to me:
The resolver is a set of routines in the C library that
provide access to the Internet Domain Name System. The
resolver configuration file contains information that is
read by the resolver routines the first time they are
invoked by a process. The file is designed to be human
readable and contains a list of keywords with values that
provide various types of resolver information.
Now if you want incomprehensible, I suggest you try the solaris man
page for "passwd".

You don't get them from it. You give them to it. You are the only
person in the universe who knows what the limiting rates written at the
back of your monitor are.

Then fine. You can't go wrong with a vertical limit at 80Hz and
a horizontal limit at 55KHz. Almost any decent monitor can make that.
Say a dotclock of 100MHz and at 1024x768 you should be maxing the
horizontal limit.

Of course it should: if your monitor won't work with standard rates,
then it has a problem and you have to read to find out what! Those
rates are VESA approved, you know :-).

Can I run 2 identical usb devices at the same time, independent of
each other? Would I just rename the device drivers?

Get explore2fs.exe (zip) from net. It can access your linux partition.
You can import your vmlinuz to your win98 partition. Get loadlin form
your CD.
Now start PC in dos mode using F8 key when starting windows. issue the
command
loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hdax
where x is the partition number of / of your linux which also can be
seen using explore2fs if you don't remember.
This should get you in linux. Now do /sbin/lilo -v as root.
This should rewrite lilo in boot sector.
