The partition is fine. It is lilo that is gone.
a) You may be able to reboot from the cdrom. Use the Rescue option
(On Mandrake, you hit F1 at the very beginning and then type in rescue.
NOt sure how redhat does it.) You can then mount the drive containing the
linux /etc directory, (say
mkdir /disk
mount /dev/hda5 /disk
lilo -r /disk
Or lilo -C /disk/etc/lilo.conf
)
b) Next time make a disk copy of your lilo booter
lilo -b /dev/fd0
Then you can always stick in your floppy and boot to linux and then just
rerun lilo.

In ALSA there is nothing like a "sndconfig".There is only a very buggy(though unusable)
"alsaconf" untility though I had to write my config file by hand.I already wrote my
own isapnp.conf entry though I know exactly which IRQs etc. the card takes.

Drive C is 15 GB and has Windows 2000 Pro (NTFS)
Drive D is 20 GB.
For all practical purposes, the only thing I do know about Linux is that it
is an operating system.
I would like to install Linux on drive D (dual boot with Windows 2000).
Can anyone recommend which Linux I should use (Redhat, Mandrake, etc.)
Also, can anyone recommend the best way to set it up.

Subject: Connecting Server through to DSL. in SUSE 7.1
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 03:46:36 GMT
Hi!
I am new to Linux.
I'm trying to connect My server [an IBM netfinity] through a dLink
hub to DSL modem. Earlier I used SUSE 6.4 and other utilities [like ppoe
and things] to connect, all were fine. Now I upgraded to SUSE 7.1. All
hell! I couldn't connect to my DSL modem, though it says SUSE has built
DSL features into 7.1.
Whenever I try, the system says default gateway not found!!
I'm using dynamic address DSL line from bell. But unfortunately bell do
not support LINUX.
ifconfig says eth0 and lo are up and running.
Can somebody help me to get up & run pls.
Since 7.1 is running much faster I'm not going to go back to 6.4.
If any specific details are needed I can give. Like ifconfig details and
others.
Regards
Siva.

Perhaps surprisingly, this is totally irrelevant.
When you dial in to your ISP, the link has to have a remote address.
However, you never really (have to) use it. Your default route can
send everything over the PPP link without having to specify the gateway.
Therefore, the remote address can be anything you (or rather, your ISP)
likes.
For instance, my ISP *always* provides address 194.109.6.1, no matter
which modem bank I happen to get connected to. Granted, it's routable,
but it's a fake address. If I do a traceroute over the PPP link, the
first hop is never 194.109.6.1.
Ciao. Vincent.

You want to call the host that's dialing in "rgtech"? That's okay.
However, there's no hostname for your local PPP address, only for your

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 gtech
192.168.0.25 rgtech
