The libasound library definately exists. My problem appears to be the fact that the
snd_cards() function have been renamed to snd_defaults_card() in the 0.9 and newer
ALSA releases, effectively breaking all other software that supports ALSA. All that I
want is a native X-Windows based mixer for ALSA. The OSS based ones do not show all
the channels for my SB Live!
Thanks for your help anyway!

Are there specific settings that one should switch when compliing a
new kernel for AMD Duron processors? I want to make sure I am getting
the most out of my system so it seems silly to compl;ie it generically
for an i386 processor.
Also, should certain parameters be flagged when compiling programs
under a Duron system? IF so what?
Any links or further information is greatly appreciated!

I would suggest you use the 2GB drive to install all of your base
components for linux, then set that drive up to be read only, so that in
case someone were to crack the box, it would be tougher for them to
replace files on a read only system.
Then place everything else on the 45GB drives, any after installed
components as well as any web site type stuff.

Might be time to roll your own kernel. It's actually quite
straightforward, and a useful (some might say necessary) skill to have.

Hi.
I noticed a reference in the lilo v 21 UG that mentions the program'
activate'. I have looked on our RH 7.0 machines here and on some places
on the web and cannot find any information on it. If anyone knows where
to find the program or docs, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
PS. I'm also generally looking for Linux command line programs that can
easily modify the boot byte and hidden bit in the MBR, like Powerquest
pqboot does for DOS.

Unless you are using gcc as a cross-compiler, or using some similar trick,
you should use the #include files in /usr/include. Install the glibc
development package.

I'm trying to figure out how to get networking up and running
(surprise) on a new installation of Storm. I'm using a 3COM 3C905B
which is showing up in /proc/pci.
I've tried manual setup of the network config during install, and the
network is unreachable.
I've tried DHCP setup after, but I can't get the DHCP client to come
up.
I've tried manual setup after install, and the system hangs right
after entering my IP information to the Network Admin tool. Any
suggestions where I can start looking?

you mean an _old_ installation.... you should get something more recent
than redhat 6.0.... afterall, it's all free, why settle for second best?
> Where can I give gcc the path to it's headers/libraries ?
type 'export'
look for LD_LIBRARY_PATH
you can also do a 'man gcc' and then type '/lib' to search for lib, and
you might just happen to find your command-line answer around line 74.

sndconfig or soundconfig to configure your sound.... but if your card is
unsupported then it is unsupported. This is something that people have
done a lot of complaining to intel about.... and just as it seems that
they may be changing their license policy to conform to GPL we find out
that there is a problem with the BSD license.... I don't see too much
intel development occuring until this is cleared up.

Hello,
you read the HELP in your prefered config
(menueconfig/xconfig/wathever_you_use),
when it comes to the CPU settings and decide then, which one you should

I know how RH6.2's anaconda works... Things are a bit different in
RH7.0. It wouldn't be too hard to find out how 7.0's anaconda works
either, but I'm going to wait until RH7.1 comes out before trying to hack
away with it.
Unfortunately there are no solid documentations available on the internet.
You may find bits and pieces of parts of Anaconda, but you won't find
official HOWTO or design specs or even Anaconda developers' scribble.
You really have to read the source code on this one. :)
I might be able to help if you had a specific question (provided that
it's RH6.2 though)

I have been using BIND9 and the BETA DDNS stuff for over a year now and it
works great!
I ran into two separate issues that may help you.
1) Pay VERY close attention to the section in the man pages concerning keys.
Even though your not getting involved with DDNS <--> DDNS exchanges I was
unable to get the thing going without setting up the keys.
2) My configuration was a bit complex (4 nic cards with some fancy routing).
The Beta DDNS server worked FANTASTIC on a single NIC. However, when I started
ramping up the configuration I found that it would only work in foreground mode
(I had to log in as root on a Console, stop DDNS and then not allow it to run
as a daemon. If I can ever get a new HD for that box I'll start submitting
bug reports on this behavior).
Good luck...

I suppose that you get that tool when you compile lilo from source.
But I'm not sure you'll need it. linux fdisk will activate any partition you
like.

what do you mean with the boot byte?
You mean change the active partition?
try any of the fdisk's : fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk
And what do you mean with hidden bit?
There's no such thing.
There is a semi-standard way to hide a windows partition, that's
"logical or" the partition ID with 0x10
But again, any of the fdisk versions can change the type for you.

You have to defrag that FS first.
Of that I know too little, ask a windows NG.
Then you can use any of the partition splitting tools you mentioned.
There is an alternative, use PowerQuests PartitionMagic.
No need to defrag, run it and resize on the fly.
There's one catch though, it's not a free tool.

Hi all,

How come on a fresh installed server, the ftp and telnet server don't start

then I found out that another friend who has 7.2 also doesn't have his ftp
and telnet server start by themselves. I know inetd supposted to take care

for ftp:
X:\chiang.chunte>ftp linux-mvectra
Connected to linux-mvectra.L3.com.
Connection closed by remote host.
for telnet
Your telnet connection has been terminated
Obivously, I got connection, but it's not connecting. Any clue?

It could be because these services are very insecure and should require a

tcpwrappers would be my first susgestion .. Look in the files
/etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny , odds are you have something
like 'all: all' in deny.. Just modify that file to suit (or just
delete the entries :) ..)
