That makes no difference. Add lba32 to lilo.conf (and remove linear).
If that doesn't work, complain about your bios or use loadlin or
maybe grub.

Hi... I'm trying to install/upgrade to Realplayer 8 from 5.0 which came
with the SuSe 7.0 distro. I am using a Toshiba 500CDT laptop with
120MHz P1, 48M RAM. I have downloaded the rpm from the Real site, but
no matter what install options I use, --install --upgrade --nodeps
--force, etc, I get the message as follows...

I don't get it. The website says it's for Linux.

If you have own another computer that has Windows on it, you can
install Partition Magic there and during installation create a "rescue
floppy" which boots and runs via DOS. Then the floppy can be used on
any system. The drawback is that you pay full price for Partition Magic,
yet use just a small bit of it.
(you could use a friend's Windows computer to make the disk, but
whether that is strictly legal or not...)

Hi,
I've had trouble with creating an image file for the lat couple of
kernel builds after say 2.4.0-test9. When I attempt to create one,
/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.2.img 2.4.2., it is not completed, I
can't kill the process and can't shutdown. I do have a loop device and
have done nothing new in my kernel to cause this that I'm aware of.

I am just getting into USB, but it assigns each device to the next
available device of that type, so it should work as long as suitable /dev
entries exist on your system.
/var/log/messages should give a clue which /dev to use to access the usb
device. For example if it identifies a cdrom or cd-rw as scsi0 or sr0,
then /dev/scd0 could be mounted as a cdrom or you could write to it as
/dev/sg0 (assuming proper kernel options or modules loaded). Don't
confuse the effective /dev with the usb device number which it uses to
address each usb device.
I don't have multiple usb devices, the best I can test is using scsi
emulation for my ide atapi drive (scsi0). When I attach my usb cd-wr,
usb-storage assigns it the next available scsi number.

Funny. I have 4.7.5 on RH 7.0 and have had no problems.
However I've not tried NS6.0 under Linux since it doesn't
work for me under Win NT or Win 98. I'm waiting for 6.1
or whatever.

> ...And still the battle rages on. Until recently it was a pretty much
Mac vs. Microsoft thing. Here comes the new guy Linux. I too have loaded
Linux. At first it was just my currious nature. I wanted to see what all
the hype was about. Now, however... I understand why people are happy to
make the switch. I am fortunate to work in a place where computer advice
is very easy to come by... in fact darn hard not to receive. One of the
guys in particular speaks Linux (very fluently). He has watched me with
some interest, as I have discovered (the hard way) the pit-falls and pay-
offs of converting to Linux. I am also fortunate enough to have several
computers in my home. I must admit that one of them is still running on
Microsoft. the others are guinnea pigs for various releases of Linux...
including the latest Red Hat stuff.
One of the first lessons that I have learned is that Microsoft DOES NOT
like to share a hard drive with anything other than another microsoft
product. Upon setup of the Linux software... there is even a prompt that
tells you this. Something to the effect of "there is a speed penalty for
using a non Linux native hard drive format" ie. FAT 16 from Microsoft. I
ignored the warning and installed anyway. The results were not
encouraging. Linux started and ran VERY SLOWLY... but the eyepoping
graphics and the appearance of the Gnome workstation were enough to
convince me to format the hard drive and make the whole thing Linux
friendly. The results... a powerful workstation that except for a power
outage 2 months ago... has not needed re-booting for over 18 months. I
have had to re-boot the Microsoft box 2 times today alone, for nothing
more than adjusting display properties and trying to play Half-Life.
If my wife would only allow it... the Microsoft machine would be history.
I think the only reason she keeps it around is because for some awful
(probably childish) reason she is more comfortable with it. Still she
uses the Linux machine too.
My advice to you is this...
Forget the VooDoo video card and the high end keyboard and all the frilly
stuff for now. Go to Ebay and buy an old Pentium machine... like a P133
with a 2 gig hard drive. Format it. Pull an old keyboard and 3 button
mouse out of the closet. Set up Linux on that machine first and see if
you like it. I agree that Linux is not for everybody. It can seem
frustrating at first. Remember that Linux was developed in the early 90's
and is only 10 years old. Remember how confusing the Microsoft stuff was
at first.. Or even DOS for that matter. Linux is in it's infancy, it's
still growing and with every release it gets better. The best part about
it is that so many more people have access to the code and are working the
bugs out collectively... in a few more years Microsoft will have a major
competitor that it won't be able to buy out (unless they wanna send every
man woman and child on the planet a check). Linux is truely the peoples
system. Compaq has seen this and is offering it as an option on their new
computers now too.
Just as AMD payed its dues to Intel in their first few years in the
Processor market. So too will Linux suffer under the hand of Microsoft.
Eventually it will lead to more reasonable pricing and better competition
among software developers.
Anyhoo... it's just my opinion. One guy using Linux a thousand or more
miles away from you. There are so many reasons why you may be having
problems and I am certainly not qualified to offer expert advice on how to
fix them. What I can tell you is this. I feel your pain. Hang in there
and hopefully someone will be able to chant the right spell to heal your
machine and make Linux work for you. It's worth the wait.

Actually Partition Magic (at least 5.0, which I have..) comes with disks
that have DR-DOS on them, and you can boot from them and run Partition
Magic from within its own little world.
So you don't even need (MS)-DOS or window$

Either it might be attempting to use ident (ie, identd) or the box you are
connecting to cannot find a hostname for the connecting box. Although, I
would think that would slow up telnet and ftp also. But you might make
sure that there are no typos (like comma in place of dot) for IP and names
of your local boxes in /etc/hosts or local DNS.
>Secondly, how can I synchronise the clocks of several linux machines ?
The xntp package. The clients probably just need ntpdate from that
package (that is all I use since my clocks are accurate). To sync them
all together you could run xntpd on the internet connected box.

If you don't want to worrry about Windows stepping on the MBR, it is best
to have a primary /boot partition to put LILO on. Then just set the /boot
partition as active boot partition (Windows or Linux fdisk).
But if you cannot do that, just make sure that you have a working boot
floppy for Linux. If your distro did not make one for your, I believe
there is a HOWTO for that.
A simple way is to 'cp /boot/vmlinuz /dev/fd0' to a perfectly DOS
formatted floppy (no bad sectors). But if you did not compile that kernel
on that system, you would need to use 'rdev' program to tell the floppy
which partition is /
