Thank you.
I got a paper version of HOWTO, effectively it's better.
But I have another problem yet :

- when I start ppp-go ( slack distrib ), the system responds that
' ppp module lacks in kernel ' !
- if I try insmod -v ppp, the system responds that
' a ppp module already exists ' !
- if I try to unload the ppp module, the system responds that
' ppp module is busy ' !

What a brainstorm.

You likely need to load the 'sr_mod' module to access it as a cdrom (see
dmesg or /var/log/messages). Note that /dev/sr0 is hard linked to
/dev/scd0 so either device could be mounted as a cdrom. However ripping
music or cd burning needs the 'sg' module and device (/dev/sg0).

Try to recompile it not like a module but inside the kernel.
Check what exactly the ppp-go does (maybe is looking in the
wrong place...).

I know nothing about NT, or where you put LILO, but all you should have to
do is put LILO on a partition and point the NT boot loader to that
partition. Or at least that is what I do with mulple Linux versions. I
point one LILO at the partitions containing LILO for the other distros.

If you don't put LILO in the MBR it can go on any of the first 4
partitions that is not a primary Win partition on any drive (if the boot
loader you use can handle that).

Which boot magic do you use?
Boot magic come with partition magic 6, or with partition magic 6 PRO.

mount them with a umask option.

mount -t ntfs -o umask=0xxx /dev/hda1 /mnt/win2k

Where xxx should be the mask you want to use

Sorry, I posted a few days ago but didn't get the exact information I was
looking for. My bad... I phrased the questions wrong.

So... I have a nifty new Sony PCG Z600TEK here in France. It came with Win2K
installed. It has a nice big 20GB disk split into 2 FAT32 partititions of
12GB (Win2K) and an 8GB partition with, it seems, nothing on it.

I want to dual boot to Linux and Win2K. I *do not* relish the idea of
copying boot.ini over to the Win2K partition every time I change it (I do
that quite often), so I was wondering what the alternative there is to using
LILO on the MBR without trashing my drive and still being able to boot
Win2K. Booting from floppy is not really an option as the Z600TEK has an
external floppy and I do not wish to carry it around with me.

I have yet to see the process for doing this posted anywhere after a search
(just the NT boot loader version) so I would appreciate someone who knows
giving a yell.

Thanks in Advance!
Daryl.

I don't have this machine, and my win2k is installed on a secondary HDD,
but I do boot three OS's (win98 linux and win2k) through LILO, which resides
in the MBR. I don't think your setup is essentially diferent from mine,
so I 'll tell you what you could do:

Delete the second partition.
Install linux there. I suppose it's a new linux distro, older ones may
refuse to
install there because that partition lies entirely above cyl. 1024.
If that's the case, report back.

Otherwise, just install there, like you normally would, and place LILO in
the MBR. When you've booted you're newly installed linux, edit
/etc/lilo.conf

add the following lines:

other=/dev/hda1
          label=win2k
          alias=w

(I'm lazy, I always use a one-character alias to choose an os)

now run `/sbin/lilo -v` and if it doesn't complain, reboot
and enter "w" at the LILO prompt.

There's really nothing more to it.

If anything fails, don't panic: report back, describe what fails and it
will probably be easy to solve.

Check what is in the file bootsect.lnx.
Use a hex-viewer. Somewhere near the start the characters LILO can be found.
If they are not there, you didn't copy the bootsector. Are you sure it is a
hda6????
LILO would probably have complained, as this is an extended partition.

I'm not sure if you can get the NT loader to do this.
I doubt it though.

It could go to a logical partition, but it's a very weird situation.

To remove the Linux partition you can use the linux fdisk, simply
become root and start fdisk, or you can use a boot floppy or your
RH CD to boot into linux and then remove the partitioning.

To remove lilo from the boot sector use lilo -u or lilo -U. You
can also use a DOS fdisk with fdisk /MBR to reinstall the 'normal'
MBR.

I don't suggest you to make a low-level format, with 'modern'
hard disk is unnecessary.

There is some compilation problem in the redhat 6.x rpms from kde.org.
It cannot recognize oss or alsa sound drivers.
You need to download the kdesupport and kdelibs src.rpms to compile the
kdesupport, kdelibs, kdelibs-sound and arts rpms for yourself.
Then apply these newly generated rpms again.
I wish these can help people who face the same problem.
Thanks for the internet resource!

I have compiled the 2.4.2 kernel and applied ppp-2.4.0 to for my RH6.1

But as I connect my linux box to internet with modem.
It said that ppp support is not included in my kernel or loaded as

As I try to modprobe ppp, ppp1 or ppp0, it said that ppp cannot be

Then what I should include in kernel configuration to include ppp

Did you create /dev/ppp per the Changes file? This sounds like
what was happening to me before I did that. See

sound card. Yast2 does not detect my sound card and I tried to configure it

working.

What I did:

Error:

The same error was if I tried to use OPL3SA3 model.
