you can get ics working and sharing a connection from a win98se box to a
linux box. make sure ics is running on the win98 machine. assume the ip of
the win98 machine is 192.168.0.1, set the ip of the linux box to 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255, set the default gateway to
192.168.0.1 and set the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf to be 192.168.0.1 as
well, then try to ping from your linux box out to a valid address - say
www.lugoj.org and see if that works.
the ifconfig statement you gave will work, but you do not need to do the
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart afterwards or else you have undone
everything.

i'm trying to install "ddd" on RH 6.2.
on my RH 6.2 install, i downloaded & installed the motif rpm:
lesstif-0.92.0-1 (motif clone http://www.lesstif.org/)
and then, from ftp.redhat.com, ddd:
ddd-3.0-1
when i start ddd, it gives a seg fault and core dumps.
(i also tried using motifzone.net's openmotif-2.1.30-2_ICS...same
result)
anyone have a clue to help me get ddd up and going?

it boots fine with 2.2.16 so i know my fs is valid
so /etc/inittab must be all set too
ext2 is compiled into the kernel
my scsi stuff for the disk is all compiled into the kernel (not modules)
i even tried using:
append = "root=/dev/sda1"
in my lilo.conf
my e2fsprogs are updated as well as my module utils.
what could be the problem?
thanks-

oh: this is a P166 DECxldp

i have an NCR 53c810 scsi adapter and i'm using the
53c7xx driver (works fine in 2.2.16)
oh, and the 2.2.16 is the kernel binary installed by slackware 7.1
so is modularized.

Hi,
I've posted this question a while back but didn't get any response.
I desperately help. I am running RedHat 7.0 and kernel 2.4.2.
I am also running XDM on the linux box. I would like to be able
to use X-win32 (running on Microsoft Windows 98/NT) to logon
to the linux box to run X there. I have the exactly the same scenario
for Redhat Linux 6.1 running on kernel 2.2.18 and everything works
fine there. What do I need to do to make this work on Redhat 7.
Please help. I am desparate...

i think you mean winmodems (softmodems, controllerless modems) require
software to act as a controller, and there are very few soft modems that
have support under linux. Hardware PCI modems should work just fine under
linux. They are, after all, just serial devices, so all that you need is
one of the many modem control packages out there.

1) Delete the modules.

Because egcs is an older gcc. So egcs (which is required by egcs-c++) is
automatically tried uninstalled prior to installing gcc. As it is
required by egcs-c++, it will not uninstall and gcc can therefore not
install.
Solution:
1) Uninstall egcs and all packages, which require egcs, and install gcc
afterwards
2) Upgrade all gcc packages at one time (rpm -Uvh <package1>
<package2>...)

I dont know dreamweaver, however, there is another wysiwyg editor:
Look for IBM Webshere Homepage Builder (formerly called Toppage)
You can download a 60 day trial version.
It uses a special customiced version of wine, which you must download
separately.
Works fine with mdk 7.2 here.

Hello,
what kind of distro do you use?
>From my machine (SuSE):
rpm -aq | grep gcc
gcc-2.95.2-19
rpm -q -R gcc-2.95.2-19
binutils
libc
kernel_headers
ld-linux.so.2
libc.so.6
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1)
I have no egcs installed and never had a need for it.
I read once, that Linus would only use gcc, so why,
if this is true, should I use something else?

Not sure about 7.0 but generally you'd use IPCHAINS to fine tune your
firewall. here's a howto:
http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org/ipchains/HOWTO.html
And the firewall-howto would probably be helpful too:

egcs is an alias for the gcc 2.91.* releases. It is an acronym for

Hello all,
stupid question I can't figure out. Using RH 6.2, and Gnome with
Enlightenment window manager. The Gnome toolbar at the bottom of the
screen does not show the panel with the virtual desktops. How to I add
this to the panel? I believe the virtual screens are there (I can run

get them by selecting 'goto previous desktop', and 'goto next desktop'.
Adding 'applet' to the Gnome toolbar doesn't seem to provide the correct
options.

You can do it 2 different ways depending how your system is setup.
If your system uses /etc/sysctl.conf then you do it like this.
vi /etc/sysctl.conf # and add this to the file
# 0 Disables, 1 Enables packet forwarding
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
Then restart the network.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/netwrok restart
Or if your system doesn't use /etc/sysctl.conf you can do it like this.
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Then add the line above to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local so it is
started at every boot of the system.

Subject: Problems Compiling hp2xx, where's "X11"?
Hi all,
I have the worst luck compiling programs. I an running RH6.2. I am
trying to compile hp2-3.4.0 and am getting the following error:
make all
gcc hp2xx.o hpgl.o picbuf.o bresnham.o chardraw.o getopt.o getopt1.o
to_vec.o to_pcx.o to_pcl.o to_eps.o to_img.o to_pbm.o to_rgip.o

-lm -o hp2xx
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lX11
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [all] Error 1
I believe it cannot find the X11 system files for viewing. So where and
the heck are they?
The problem line in the makefile I think is:
ALL_LIBS = -lX11 -lm # Maybe -lX instead of -lX11 is needed?
I have tried changeing lX11 to lX but then just get that giving me an
error.
I like redhat 6.2 but compiling suff in it can be a pain for those of us

I installed RH7 and opted to boot from the floppy. Is there a way that I can
change the system to boot from the MBR without re-installing Linux? I
thought I might be able to edit a file but I don't want to mess things up
since I have win98 on the primary partition. Thanks in advance....

Hello,
on my system (SuSE) the onces in /usr/X11R6/lib are used and this directory
is set in /etc/ld.so.conf.
ldconfig -v | grep X11
/usr/X11R6/lib:
libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.1
libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.1
libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.0
libX11.so.3 -> libX11.so.3.1.0
Adjust your ld.so.conf, to point to your X11 libs and run ldconfig -v again.
Now check:
ldconfig -p | grep libX11
that they are really regocnized by your system.
Good luck
