There is a general problem with lpd in that it will check the remote
server for its queue. For simple printer boxes or printers with builtin
ethernet interfaces, this query would be pointless as these would neve
contain a print queue anyway, but what is more problematic is that
if the printer is busy printing then the printer box won't answer these
queries. What you could do is hack the lpd source so it won't do remote
printer queue queries, which of course is not a good idea of you use
the same lpd daemon to forward print requests to another lpd daemon.
If you can get a printer backend using port 9100 or something similar
it probably would work better; maybe it was port 7100. The LPDng
packages includes this, as well as quite a lot of reading stuff
that might help you solve your problem. If I'm not mistaken, redhat
os adopted LPRng in the next release and dropped the old lpd package.

Try <ctrl><alt><+> and <ctrl><alt><->
To keep the changes permanent, adapt /etc/X11/XF86Config and change the
order of the different screen resolution, put the largest first.

I would sure hope not!
Search the web for the disc-partitioning HOWTO
You can do with / (maybe a /boot under 1024 cyl. if you have a large
disc)
and a swap partition (swap-size approx. equal to physical RAM)
Best advise I can give you is to try it. Learn from your mistakes and in
a few weeks, if needed, start over and do it right.

I am running Red Hat 6.2. I found that some of the programs that I use
cause the pc speaker to beep when an error occurs in the program.
I let some of these programs run overnight, (I xlock'ed my terminal)
and came in the next morning to find many annoyed neighbors, that were
forced to listen to my machine beep at them for a few hours. Is there
a good way to disable the speaker? Ideally having xlock turn it off would
be nice, but I don't know of any way to do this.

I believe there are some operations that can only be fulfilled
from the terminal - by connecting a keyboard and a monitor... And this
(installation) looks like one of them. So, either borrow a monitor and a
keyboard, or attach the hard disk on which linux is to be installed to
another computer and install it, preserving the correct settings.

Thank you for your answer, that's valuable information. However, now I have
some new questions:
>It's the libstdc++ library that goes with egcs-1.1.2 (the predecessor to
gcc-2.95.*).
Alright, does that mean I'll have to install the older egcs over the newer
gcc? If so, where can I get it?
Or could I just try to get that lib and put in on my system so JRE will be
happy? It can't be that easy, can it? I guess doing that will make at least
a little bit of hell break lose as soon as I fire up java, right?
>No, that's the "static" equivalent. To build shared libraries, you
>probably need to configure with "--enable-shared".
See, that's the funny part. Here's what I used to configure gcc (from a
special build directory outside of the source tree):
../gcc-2.95.2/configure \
--prefix=/usr \
--enable-shared \
--enable-haifa \
--enable-threads \
--enable-cpp
So I asked for shared libraries. And that why I was a little bit amazed
about not having new *.so.* libs on my system. Do you happen to have any
idea on why that could have happened?
Thank you for any information

You can install RH 6 with the kludge described in the Ultra DMA mini HOWTO.
I munged my system this morning and therefor did just that this evening.
However, it is my understanding that any version of RH 6.x will only run
DMA at 33 MHz.
Therefore, you will then need to up grade your Kernel to 2.2.16 with the
ide patch.

The problem is that fdisk (or cfdisk) won't recognize the extended
drive holder only partitions inside the extended are (starting
from /dev/hda5). Sfdisk instead lists also this extended drive holder
as /dev/hda2. I already tried to change the ID of this extended area,
but was not successfully with sfdisk. In fact I tried to change it to
ID=b and learned afterwards that it really should be 0fh, right? So can
this be done with sfdisk? I now have also a program named edpart. Any
experience with this?

At the risk of starting a religious flame battle (I suspect there are such for
favorite distros) I have been able to use binary rpm's that have been listed for
Red Hat on SuSE 6.3 with no problems.
BTW I just helped someone start the install RH 7.0 and indeed the installation
seems to be going well and the user interface is as good if not better than

Printcap looks as if it is correctly configured.
I know the hardware is good. Where do I look to see if Linux is correctly

Last night, I "accidentally" upgraded my libc6 on the fly. I was
doing an apt-get to update all of my PHP4 stuff, and the various
dependencies determined I needed a new libc6 (and others). The update
went very smoothly.
I'll side with the previous author, just upgrade to Debian 2.2 using
apt-get. Back up any important data first, just to be safe.

You can use LILO to set your text console resolution even to SVGA text modi
(depends on your card) with the "vga" entry in your lilo.conf. Try to set
"vga=ask" to get a list of possible modi on startup.

go like this:
export NNTPSERVER=your.news.server
in your bash shell before you start
slrn in that same shell. The error message
I think tells you what it wants you to do
in csh not bash so if you want to copy

(setenv NNTPSERVER your.news.server, without

There are a couple different places you
can store this command, but if you like
changing news servers from time to time
it's handy to just tell it the server you
want when you call up slrn.
