Subject: Installing kernel
Arch = i386
Bootloader = lilo
Dist = RedHat 5.2 (original)
make method = make bzImage
Most kernel install docs advise to copy arch/i386/boot/bzImage into
/boot/vmlinuz-xx.yy.zz, and copy System.map into
/boot/System.map-xx.yy.zz. For the past few kernel upgrades, plus a few
glib updates, this has worked well. However, some files in the /boot
directory are beginning to look really old, and maybe they need
updating. To be specific:
boot.0300
boot.b
chain.b
module-info-2.0.36-0.7
map (not to be confused with System.map)
For each of these files, what is the source, and where is the updated
version?
Thanks,

Hi everyone,
I have a Creative decoder card (DXR2) and I can play DVDs/VCDs/MPGs on my TV
through Win2k with no problem. But now I want to take out the card and put
it in my P166 box (which is closer to my bigger TV).
Would it be possible to have the decoder card working along with the tv-out
capability ? What software would be needed (if possible a console soft.)
Thanks,

I've got a Saturn GL2 card to drive a fixed frequency SGI monitor. It
installed and worked fine under an older version of Red Hat. Now that
I've installed Mandrake 7.2, I cannot seem to get the configuration
program to wait long enough for me to complete all the settings before
it adopts the partial settings and produces an unreadable screen. How
can I do this from a terminal window (or delay it long enough to finish
the settings)?

I'm a complete neophyte to Linux, so please be gentle. . .
I have RedHat 7.0 SMP Build 16-22. Using UP2DATE I got build 17-14. I
edited the LILO.CONF to have it boot to the 17-14 build. I noticed
there is space for a RAMDISK entry that ends in .IMG. I can not find a
17-14 .IMG file though. Can I build my own? How? (Detailed, please. .

My friends,
some of you sit there in ultimate judgement upon the Gates product as if you
were an all knowing computer god.....
what you fail to recognise is what windows does it does better the Linux
......... AT THE MOMENT.
I am a newbie to the worlds most awe inspiring O/S and many years ago I was
a newbie to windows .... which one was easier to set up and even more
importantly KEEP going .... windows that's what it is designed for .... sure
it crashes like a bitch but when you reboot your computer in the morning at
least you know everything is (90% of the time ) gonna be there
HAVING said that, I want the Linux community to show me the error of my
ways.... show me and all the newbies out there that Linux IS better will GET
better and will utterly decimate the crap that is MSWindows !!
Let me give you a chance .... I have just installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 to a
partition of my HD. It seemed to set up fine .... SEEMED ... when I rebooted
and entered for the first time I perplexed to find that I (as any user on
the system) have NO ACCESS RIGHTS to ANY removable media (floppy and 2
CDROM's) even though they were mounted. I investigated only to find that I
couldn't change any access rights for a few reasons ...
One very big one is I cannot in any way open a terminal in KDE2 as every
single time I try the machine turns into your so hated Windows machine and
god forbid locks up...completely.
So I try's the GUI setup interface .... nothing ! It won't let me change a
thing....
aghhhhhhhh ... I love the idea of Linux and when it is working it really
does live up to its name AND MORE.
So please help this newbie see the light
Thanks

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 01:27:09 GMT
I've just installed Mandrake 7.2, and almost everything is right (although it
took an age and a great deal of fiddling to get the soundcard to work!), but I
still can't get the modem to work. (And I found no relevant articles after
scanning the messages already posted.)
Modem: PCMCIA Xircom (3COM) CreditCard CM56
cardctl ident gives the right answer, and cardmgr seems to be doing its bit,
so I think the problem is with kudzu.
There is an entry in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf showing a generic serial modem on
ttyS2, which is also correct, but every time I boot kudzu tells me that it has
been removed, at which point I tell kudzu to "do nothing". I made a backup of
this hwconf and removed the modem entry, hoping that a reboot would allow
kudzu to recognize and set up the modem, but this didn't work either.
Also, there is no /dev/modem symlink to /dev/ttyS2.
I have spent a fair amount of time scouring the net and howtos to try and find
out how to get the modem to be recognized by kudzu and eventually to work, but
alas I have not found the answer. As such, I appeal to the more knowlegable
readers of this group for help.
Thank you!

For ipchains, you can "ipchains -L" to show what your firewall is blocking
and allowing. You should take a look on the Linux-IPCHAINS HowTo so you can
further customize your firewall. You will always want some minimal incoming
connection.

I know what you are looking for and no there is not a true native wysiwyg
html editor for Linux. Webshere from IBM is about the closest thing I have
found. The only windows application I use is Netobjects Fusion. I use
win4lin to boot to windows within linux and run the html editor from there.
One thing though win4lin did not run Dreamweaver when I tried it.

If you are wanting to build an initrd image you should be able to do it
with mkinitrd something like this.
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.17-4.img 2.2.17-4

Oh dear... Here I go again....
I have trashed my linux system so many times by using LILO that I gave
up and settlrd for LOADLIN....
OK. To answer the question about the boot partition first. The actual
boot partition location may be anywhere on the HD. ( mine was hda6 out
of the maximum possible 8 partitions per HD ).
However if I may I would like to offer an alternative.
I now use a small DOS6.22 partition and loadlin.exe to boot linux.
my Partition map looks like this:
/dev/hda1 A MSDOS
/dev/hda2 Extended
/dev/hda5 Linux Swap
/dev/hda6 EXT 2
Using Partition Magic (version 4 upwards) it is possible to resize EXT2
partitions without losing data and make room for additional partitions..
There are various reasons why I use LOADLIN, but the main two are, I
never worry about LILO getting cloberred by Microsoft in multi-os
scenarios, and running re-compiled kernels becomes a simple drop-in and
go task (if it don't work just rename the old kernel and start again...
I hope that this helps in some way

Hi all,
Can someone walk me through updating my modutils package on my Debian

I've upgraded my kernel as I needed to rebuild it to support my soundcard.
It looks like the directory structure of /lib/modules/ differs from what my
old kernel was and old modutils is expecting to see.
I can't find anything new with dselect & will need some help working with
the files I found at

Let me know what other info. you need & thanks in advance.

Just a brief point... Why not consider using loadlin to boot linux. It has
the advantage of not using the MBR and won't screw up and leave the computer in
an unusable state...
Putting LILO on the MBR after installing Microsoft OS is usually safe...
However MS is notorious for messing around with MBR's and I have an emergency
dos floppy with fdisk and dos PQMAGIC on for emergencies...

Well, in 2.2.16 you are using the 53c7,8xx driver. The 53c7xx driver in
2.4 ist a different thing ( read the README.ncr53c7xx in
linux/scsi/drivers) . The 53c7,8xx driver was replaced by the ncr53c8xx

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 03:51:47 GMT
I am a Linux Newbie and am about to pull my hair out trying to install a
network card.
I have tried both a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 card and a D-Link DFE530TX+
card. Neither one are automatically recognized on install. With respect to
the D-Link card, I've read that the TX+ model uses the Realtek 8139 driver
(and not the Via Rhine driver used by the TX model) however during install
both of the Realtek modules (8129 & 8139) failed.
Either one of the cards works fine in Windows but I cannot even get Linux to
recognize the card on bootup. Additionally, ifconfig does not see eth0.
I'm currently trying to get the D-Link to work but have the Linksys card
available as well if installing it would be preferable / easier. I've
scoured the net for a how-to concerning the D-Link and MDK 7.2 but it
appears that most everyone is reporting that it is automatically recognized
on install.
Can anyone provide the steps I need to take to get MDK 7.2 to see one of
these cards. I am at wits end.
Much thanks and appreciation in advance.
