fdisk is just used to make partitions -- you don't need it for dual
booting (other than having something to dual boot, I suppose).

Use DOS FDISK (runs when NTSetup runs) to create your NTFS
partition(s); leave blank (unallocated) space on the drive. Proceed
to install NT normally.

Use Linux fdisk (runs when your distribution's installation is
running) to fill in the blank space you left above, and then install
Linux. Lilo will be installed last (by your distribution's
installation program); be sure it has 2 options: one for linux and
another for NT.

Is lilo installed on the MBR ?

Mine works ; here is the setup

as you can see my Win98 partition is active, but lilo will still boot
linux. I think you might like to try making Win active and try that.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

Problem - however I set the system clock, the date command returns the
correct time, but creating files etc have the wrong time stamp.

E.G.
[root@hal TEMP]# ls
[root@hal TEMP]# rdate time.nist.gov
[time.nist.gov] Wed Mar 14 14:23:30 2001
[root@hal TEMP]# rdate -s time.nist.gov
[root@hal TEMP]# date
Wed Mar 14 14:24:44 PST 2001
[root@hal TEMP]# touch testfile.txt
[root@hal TEMP]# ls -l
total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 14 22:24 testfile.txt

I've tried using Linuxconf too with the following settings:
timezone (America/Los_Angeles)
CMOS [ ] Universal Format (GMT) (unchecked)
Netserver time.nist.gov

What's this all about? Can someone pleeeeeeze help!

Thanks!

Looks for me as if you would try to connect from localhost to localhost,
I wonder what you want to achive?

If you want room to grow, I'd recommend getting a dual-processor mobo. They
cost a little more, but the expandability can't be beat. Today you can get
a 1 GHz Pentium III and have a nice, fast box. In three years you can add
another 1 GHz Pentium III and have a nice, fast box. Linux has pretty good
SMP facilities; take advantage of them.

Second: go with name-brand parts for the fewest troubles. Don't buy some
el-cheapo $10 made-in-Bangladesh 10/100 Ethernet card; plunk down the $50
and buy a nice 3Com instead. Don't buy hard drives from Dr. Fred Mbogo's
Computer Parts and Professional Dry Cleaning Service; go for Maxtor, Western
Digital, Seagate.

Third: go with industry standards whenever possible. I bought a Voodoo3 for
my box, even though other 3D accelerators are out there which have better
performance, because the Voodoo3 is pretty close to an industry standard
(just about everybody supports it). Never had a problem with it. Go for
Riva TNT2, the GeForce, the Voodoo3. Don't go for anything that's too new
and bleeding-edge; odds are, Linux won't have the support for it that you
want.

Don't bother with SCSI. I'll probably get flamed mercilessly for this, but
UltraDMA/100 is soon coming to Linux, and if there's any significant
difference performancewise between UDMA/100 and most SCSI cards, I haven't
been able to see it.

Not to be too much of a smart-ass, but print one side, turn the paper
over, and print the other side?

Seriously, are you talking about a duplex-mode printer?

If you want some help, you may find it helpful to offer the world some
more details than you have...

The good news is that what you want to do is doable and quite practical. You
are also correct when you say that you want two network cards. It will just
make the job a whole lot easier. I would recommend putting the two network
cards into the machine and then install Linux. This should simplify the
matter for you as when linux is installing, it should (hopefully, depending on
the type of cards that you have) install the appropriate driver and allow you
to configure them.

You may also want to read the IPCHAINS-HOWTO, NET-HOWTO and
Mini-Networking-HOWTO all located at: http://www.linuxdoc.org to get an
appreciation of the questions that you will be asked when it comes to you
having to configure the network section of your machine.

See ya & Good Luck

You may want to take a look at the LVS system which is available for Linux.
You can find the URL at: http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org. This provides
more load balancing between machines in a cluster but it does explain the
principles behind fall over systems as well. You might be able to adapt some
of the package to do what you want.

hello michael,
you may want to go to the debian website and search the mailing
list archives for an answer.. i am 100% sure that someone has packaged
the latest modutils for potato systems (you need the latest version to
build a 2.4.x kernel)..
