There is a linux.net.au, (apparently part of powerup.com.au), but the name
mandrake.linux.net.au does not resolve, so you apparently have some sort
of DNS problem (see below).

See if 'nslookup' can find mandrake.linux.net.au, then try the following
Perl script to see what gethostbyname and gethostbyaddr find:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
my $host = "mandrake.linux.net.au";
use Socket;
my $ip = join(".",unpack("C4",scalar gethostbyname($host)));
print "IP for $host is $ip\n";
my $rhost = gethostbyaddr(inet_aton($ip), AF_INET);
print "Name for $ip is $rhost\n";

It will support the USB port, it won't support the modem, until/if the
drivers arrive. When they do, configure the USB modem as in point 1, then
run, don't walk, to somewhere like ebay and buy an ethernet speed touch
home modem. Having drivers for something that is crap, doesn't make it
not crap any more.

I've just installed perl GD 1.32 module with no problems.
I also installed and compiled (non-perl modules, the products themselves)
zlib 1.1.3, jpeg-6b, libpng-1.0.9 and gd-1.8.4
I didn't install the FreeType fonts because I couldn't get it to download
from either site suggested.
RedHat is 7.0, Perl is 5.6
I answered all configure prompts in a no-brainer way, except for adding Xpm
support into the library by editing the Makefile as suggested in the build
of gd.
CFLAGS=-O -DHAVE_LIBXPM -DHAVE_LIBPNG -DHAVE_LIBJPEG
LIBS=-lgd -lpng -lz -ljpeg -lm
After this, perl::GD compiled and tested without event - except it said that
libgd wasn't built with Xpm support during the test, which seems strange.

During my issues of the last couple of days you could try pressing
<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1> then type "shutdown now" into the command prompt. But
your problem may run deeper than that.

Subject: serial mouse & 486
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 22:17:33 GMT
I just recently did a full install of "Linux Slackware 3.5" on my 486
computer. I tried to configure my system using the gpm and XFree86, but
the mouse don't work.
My system is:
-486DX4 100MHz;
-Linux kernel 2.0.34 on Slackware 3.5;
-3-buttons MouseSystems Serial mouse on ttyS0.
Moreover:
-with gpm in use with the "MouseSystems" protocol, mouse don't work;
-XFree86 don't work with "Mouse device" on /dev/ttyS0 in XF86Config,
even if gpm is killed;
-XFree86 crashes if selected mouse protocol 'Auto' in XF86Config;
-gpm and XFree86 don't works with the "Microsoft" and others protocols;
-Serial ports are know at boot system:
ttyS0 at 0x03f8, irq=4, UART 16550A
ttyS1 at 0x02f8, irq=3, UART 16550A;
-There isn't any modem installed on system;
-There isn't any /dev/modem or others linked to /dev/ttyS0;
-Mouse don't work even with Slackware 7.0 installed;
-In file /proc/interrupts appear IRQ 4 serial if gpm is in use and don't
have irq conflicts;
-In file /proc/ioports don't have conflicts;
-Same software configuration on Pentium 150 and Slackware 3.5 or 7.0 and
with same mouse don't have any problem, because mouse work fine;
-On Pentium 150 same mouse work with gpm and Xfree with "MouseSystems"
protocol;
-I have already consult man pages and howto's docs for gpm, XFree86,
serial ports, 3-buttons mouses, ..., without obtain solutions to my
problem.
Does anyone know how I can get Slackware to recognize that a mouse
is on my system?
Thanks, Narmer

Don't know if this is a factor (I'm just guessing here),
but you might try using the "other" compiler shipped
with RH7, i.e. "kgcc". Go ahead and do the "configure"
step, then edit the generated top-level Makefile and replace
the line
CC = gcc
with
CC = kgcc
This should tell the Makefile to use the 2.91.66 compiler
that Red Hat put in the distro for kernel compilations.
(The only good thing I've ever heard about 2.96 was from
Red Hat's propaganda; the FSF says this version should
not be used for production code and that it shouldn't have
been included in any distros, as it is purely an internally-
used development branch of GCC.)
Hope this helps.

Subject: nfs server problem
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 02:32:57 GMT
I am having a NFS server problem that I hope someone has seen before.
I spent some time looking at all the linux newsgroups and haven't seen
my problem.
The setup:
Redhat 6.2
host 192.168.0.1
client 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
no gateway
no dns
both have a host file as above.
problem:
I can mount the directory I have exported from the host no problem.
I can cat a file with no problem.
I can vi a file but I CAN'T save it.
It seems I can't write at all. The client just hang on the write. The
strange thing is when I "touch" a file it gets created on the host
but the touch command never comes back like the return path
back to the client is not known.
Anyone ever see this.

Okay, pardon the stupid question, but... did you run gmix (or kmix)
and visually verify the level settings? Your sound source isn't
just mixed all the way down, is it? I think settings get saved
between boots, so perhaps something's turned down. (If this isn't
it, forgive me, but I've found sometimes it's best to dispose
of silly-simple questions up front.)

I have had similar problems in the past with 3-button mice.
The only solution has been to install it as a TWO button mouse and emulate
3 buttons (don't use 'chord middle').
Have you installed the mouse in setup ( On my 486dx-120 I use SuSE 5.2se so
I'm guessing at the equivalent commands from older slakware versions ).
Sometimes there seems to be a conflict due to using the wrong protocol when
setting up Xfree86 using XF86Setup rather than the older console based
xf86config. Try using the Microsoft 2 button serial mouse option, the mouse
device should be /dev/mouse.

Ok, I feel a little embarassed, but a little mystified too. I ran
gmix, and the sound was up in a reasonable range. Running plaympeg
still gave no sound. When I ran xmms again (damn the skin that I was
using), I found that volume there was turned down. When I turned it
up, sound not only started working in xmms, but after I quit it it
worked in other applications as well. So why should the volume level
in xmms control everything else?

So where IS __strcopy_small supposed to be (i.e. in which library?).
A little poking around the include files showed that it's defined

I'm running RH 7.0 and have glibc-2.2-9.
